AVS:1 OCC for beginners, my first hosted SG :)

Wow, look at the time on my posts. 38 minutes has to be the fastest I've ever returned an SG post.

Anyway, now that I think about it, I should've gone for Theology. The next player should feel free to switch our research.

Courts are culture and we would have caught the 1000 yr bonus with it. Whoops, my bad. Courts are not culture. thanks for taking it off.
Agree heartily on the Sistene and Bach builds. Cathedral should have been the pre-build for it.

We don't need Cathedral as a prebuild. The AI won't build Sun Tzu's anytime soon, so we'll just use that.

I think you assumed Courthouses have culture because they actually do in some scenarios (like Mesoamerica).

It's doubling will kick in on 1700AD. I don't think SunTzu will last through Cops and Newtons so we just need to stay ahead of the AI. This game should be a cruise though. Regent and alone on an island. The only thing I see coming in the future is building a lot of defense and fortresses to protect the close incense and iron. The AI will populate our island soon after Nav and we need to douse the aspirations of taking our iron. Rubber in the future will also be a priority. Hopefully oil somewhere on the island too. Keep on clicking. More wonders coming up. Again, IMHO, we should kill the GLib when we get a couple more techs like invention and chivalry out of it. Keep your eyes peeled on F4 and adjust Theo and education runs accordingly. Happy wonder hunting.

preturn check - Switch research to Teology and max the research, 13 turns at -11. Nobody else has Monotheism so we should be pretty sure to get it first. Switch cathedral to Sun Tzu's as a prebuild for Sistines.

(1) 710AD - Checking for trades - nothing.
IBT - Maya demands engineering. I tell him to go jump in the lake. They declare war.
(2) 720AD -
(3) 730AD -
IBT - Iroquis and Spain start Sun Tzu.
(4) 740AD -
(5) 750AD -
(6) 760AD -
(7) 770AD -
IBT - Iroquis demand engineering, we tell them to get lost and they do! Nice try, Hiawatha!
(8) 780AD -
IBT - our curragh is lost trying to reach through the fog. :(
(9) 790AD - We lower the research to 90% without losing speed.
(10) 800AD -
(11) 810AD - The zulu doesn't seem to have any ships at all, our dromon has been spying around their borders for some time now without meeting anybody.
(12) 820AD - setting the tech to 60% net us 33g extra.
IBT - We get theology. What should we research next? As I see it, we would gain little from the branch starting with Invention. Chivalry we hope to get from the GL and Printing Press give us nothing. Thus we research education. while education will make the GL obsolete it will also give us a university that could be used as it is or as a prebuild for Bachs. It's also the branch where Copernicus is.

(13) 830AD - The oracle is now obsolete, but our citizens are happy anyway. Switch production to Sistine Chapel. Some MM shaves of another turn by running at a loss of 1 food per turn. No worries, we'll have Sistines in 11 and the food will last the double.

IBT - We learn Invention. Spain starts Leo.
(14) 840AD -
(15) 850AD -

Sistines in 9 turns. :) Education in 13 unless we slow down in hope of reaping in another tech or two from TGL.
We have plenty of cash, maybe we should build some embassies? We're still ahead of everyone and we cannot trade for lux yet (and we dont need to right now either) so we have not much else to use the money for.

Save

I don't think we'll get anything else from the Library. The AI will probably be lazy and follow us along the tech tree. So yeah, going full speed for Education is smart.

PP will give us the contact monopoly prior to navigation. That will be worth some money.
It looks good so far!

Yes, that it does! I was just thinking of more culture buildings. Well, if we want to switch then it's no big loss as we've only done two turns on education so far.

On the other hand, the other civs have nothing to sell us for it. At all.

So my opinion is that we should continue for Education at the current speed, build a university and of course a cathedral to get the effect from Sixtines. Then go for Copernicus.

Later on, Shakespeare's Theater! It's a very nice wonder now that it will allow us to reach past size 12 long before hospitals. That would really be a blast.

I'm not saying to switch. The AI won't have cash until the switch gov't and build some markets. I was saying that PP should be researched at some point or traded for. We will have the contact monopoly until Nav between the civs that are not connected by sea. They pay handsomely for contacts. I also completely agree on Shakes. I don't know that building a uni for culture is the best idea though. Wouldn't it be good for a prebuilder. The 1000 yr doubler will be falling off soon and it will be worth only 4cpt for a long while, Shakes is 8cpt. As soon as two AI comes up with Demo we need to get it to go for Free Art. The pop boost will be great too.

Notes:

We are still at war with the Incans, Zulu, and Mayans. We could make peace for an old tech however.....

We are up at least 1 tech on everyone.

We have over 1000 gold in the bank

PP is due in 8 turns at 100% and 47gpt.

Cathedral due in 4, and constantiople to grow in 8.

Playing now. PP will be nice for contact trading. Will have to wait to see who has the most $$. Do we have any prebuilds left after Cathedral? We do have a medium shield 12 pop city so it should be enough to get our wonders. See ya'll on the flip side.

OCC – 1000 - 1150AD 15 turns to play

Pre-turn – Well, PP is being run at 8 turns. Would have much rather had Music or astronomy for the wonders before the Leo / SZ prebuilds expire. We are up on everyone in tech except that Isabella has guns and will trade for Theology kicking in 1gpt. We don’t need it at 2nd pricing and can wait for it to drop. Workers were idling in town. We must keep these guys roading. Defense will be vital once the other civs get Nav or Mag. We need to set up a fortress barrier on our incense and iron and wherever saltpeter may be if we have any.

[1] 1010 – Moving workers to desert to road out towards west. England has guns now. So Theology to Spain for guns cash and 2gpt. Theology to England for 106g and 19gpt. We have salt in the desert. Road to connect coming. I’ll wait to colonize though.
[2] 1020 – Palace expansion. Roading towards salt. Establish some embassies. Madrid doing 6spt. Salamance doing 17spt, SZ in 7 and will be a powerhouse city with it’s floodplains and hills.
[3] 1030 – Maya want peace and Eng. No thanks.
Cathedral > Harbor
[4] 1040 – Moving workers to build fortress on salt.
[5] 1050 – England demands education. I hang up on her and no war.
Harbor > Horse – I was going to go University but want to have a prebuild when the slew of wonders comes up.
[6] 1060 – Can get some chump change 5gpt for theology from Hiawatha. Check next turn.
[7] 1070 – England has chivalry at monopoly. Spain and India are fighting.
[8] 1080 – Just realized my weed when I built horse w/o barracks.
Horse > Brax. I notice we still don’t have a granary. This makes Brax in 3 instead 2 because I have no excess food. I swap to granary so we can utilize some MM’ing possibilities. Sci-slider to 10% with PP due next turn.
[9] 1090 - PP comes in. Music in 12 at 100%. Lets see who knows who. Portugal knows nobody but us. The others are all still separated by the seas as to whom they have contact with except for Spain who knows everyone except Zulu and Portugal. I introduce her to Henry for 4gpt and 19g. England gives us 60g and 7gpt for Henrys address. Hard to keep track of who knows who but I know England and Spain know each other. Other contacts can be traded later. I hurry the granary.
[10] 1100 – Granary > brax. Will hurry next turn.
[11] 1110 – Hurry Brax for 92g. Horse sentries on Saltpeter. Workers heading to Iron and incense to fortress.
[12] 1120 – Brax > Horse
[13] 1130 – Workers fortressing incense.
[14] 1140 – Horse > Warrior for upgrading later. He is only 1 turn and then a uni prebuild can be started.
[15] 1150 – England completes Knights of Templar.
Warrior > Uni prebuild. The uni will come in as soon as Music comes in so you have to do the Big Picture trick so it does not complete. When Music comes in go to big picture, hit F1 and change the build on Constantinople to Bachs.
Notes: I started on some horses for the day when they come calling. I think we can hold the salt, iron, and closest incense if we do the following. Build workers when food box is full. Use workers to build fortresses around the perimeter from where I’ve indicated. 1 fortified defenseman should hold it. We can raise cities and war as we see fit because they will have no shield output for building military. As long as they don’t build a temple for expansion we should be OK. We are going to really want to get Shakes for the pop increase and culture. It’s a beauty for us. Keep eyes peeled down the line when someone gets democracy. We need to trade at 3rd or 4th for it and then beeline to Free artistry.

Pre-turn: Why do all that stuff to make sure to switch to Bach's before the Uni completes? I switch the prebuild to Leo's just for simplicity's sake.
Also, MM Constantinople to reach maximum shields (19spt).

2 1170AD: -
3 1180AD: -
4 1190AD: -
5 1200AD: Music Theory->Banking(due in 14)
Constantinople switched to Bach's.
6 1210AD: Get a Palace addition.
Whatever gpt deal we were getting has ended. I sell contact of Franch and Zulu to England for 5gpt. Now we're only losing -2gpt.
7 1220AD: -
8 1230AD: -
9 1240AD: -
10 1250AD: 20 Zulu Impis land just outside of Constantinople
11 1255AD: -
12 1260AD: France demands contact with Maya. I tell Joan where to stick it and she backs off.
13 1265AD: A quick diplo check reveals England is catching up with us. They're only down by Music Theory now.
14 1270AD: Another gpt deal must have ended since we're at -13gpt now.
15 1275AD: -

Notes: England is closing the tech gap fast. We may want to consider turning off research soon and just buying and trading for techs after that. We're not going to maintain our lead for long. I'd wager that we can complete one or two tech branches (to Economics, Navigation, or Free Artistry) on our own, but we'll start faltering after that.

10 1250AD: 20 Zulu Impis land just outside of Constantinople

Great movie - Michael Caine & Jack Hawkins

ZULUUUUUUU!!!!

Synopsis:

Based on actual events, this film takes place in 1879 at Africa's Roarke's Drift, a military post occupied by 97 British soldiers. The Englishmen receive word that they are about to be besieged by 4,000 Zulu warriors armed with spears and even rifles. The soldiers stay and fight the warriors, desperately using everything they can find to withstand the onslaught.

You better get a bunch of rifles real quick or this is going to be over very soon

Preturn check: Not much.
We can buy Chivalry from several civs, but since we don't really need it I wait.

IBT - Spain completes Leo.
(1) 1280AD -
(2) 1285AD -
IBT - Spain wants to sell us chivalry for PP+120g, no deal. Zulu demands literature+70g for peace, no deal there either.
(3) 1290AD - research down to 50% nets us 50g before banking.
IBT - Banking->Democracy (18 turns)
(4) 1295AD -
(5) 1300AD -
IBT - India offers chivalry+10g for theology, I accept just to be nice. :)
(6) 1305AD -
(7) 1310AD -
(8) 1315AD -
(9) 1320AD -
(10) 1325AD - Found a new landmass.
AVS1_1325AD.jpg

IBT - Iroquis demands Education, we decline, they were bluffing. The Maya demands theology for peace, no deal.
(11) 1330AD -
(12) 1335AD - Iroquis and England have Chemistry, they are willing to sell it for music theory and some gold.
(13) 1340AD - Music theory will be worthless in 4 turns when we finish Bach. We sell it.
We buy Chemistry from England for Music+134g. We sell Music to Iroquis for 37gpt. Nobody else has anything, they are all way behind.
(14) 1345AD -
IBT - The Incas demand Literature+40g for peace, no deal. Iroquis and England start Bach's.
(15) 1350AD -

Summary: Bach's will be finished in 2 turns. Democracy in 7. Iroquis and England are on par with us, the rest are way behind. We ought to experience war wearines sooner or later, but as soon as that happens we can easily buy peace from all civs that are at war with us since they are even more behind than the others.
