The first election of the Babylonian Democracy.
Yes, election. It was a strange word to those who had labored under the Despotism and a finally-realized dream to those who started the first Republic. The first Babylonian president was going to be elected.
It was quite a procedure, this first election, and a few things went a bit wrong. Something about chads, but it certainly did not defeat the happy mood that the people were experiencing. When the dust had finally settled, President Hammurabi Trump was the first to take the oath of office. A businessman of no small repute, Trump vowed to bring a new age of economics to the land of Babylon.
His diaries are now on display at the Smithbabylonian Museum for all to see. Such a telling display of writing when one considers that at the time Babylon was tying to wrest itself from under the thumb of the evil Russian empire.
Following are some of the more exciting passages from that diary. Historians, to this day, do not understand why the entries have numbers next to them.
1778: (0)
I took office today, and there was a great deal that I wanted to get accomplished. It is my goal to make Babylon a huge money-making machine. This will allow us to gain scientifically on the Russians and allow us to spend some money upgrading our military as well. In many cities near our capital and our Forbidden Palace, Ive instituted a strict building regimen. Either build a marketplace, a bank, an aqueduct (if needed), and if all those are built concentrate on the necessities like barracks. Libraries are also allowed if nothing else takes precedence.
I called upon that ugly old bat Catherine of Russia. Despite her odious nature, it would be necessary to trade with her. I have many luxuries, and the Russians will be my greatest market.
I see that many of our deals that we have now are ripe for price gouging. Ill list the new deals that I made:
Silks: No deal currently being made. Receive dyes and 1 gold/turn.
Wines: Raise the price from 15 to 47 gold per turn.
Ivory: Raise the price from 36 to 47 gold/turn
I renegotiated peace for another 20 turns. Peace for peace straight up.
I set up a Mutual Protection Pact with Catherine as well for my world map and 15 gold. This made Catherine happy and I got the feeling that she was no longer annoyed with me but was still cautious.
I left the Right of Passage agreement alone. I had some forces in her territory and I wanted to move them out before she made me and got annoyed again. It is still in effect, and Im not really sure how to deal with it right now so I left it.
I also contacted the Aztecs to see what they were up to. Former leaders of Babylon had given them many cities to use as their own, yet they still seemed furious with us. Well have to keep being nice to placate them whenever necessary.
I offered the Aztecs astronomy and they gave me 6 gold/turn and 8 gold.
Ill offer more at later dates and continue to build a road to their capital to trade more luxuries and possibly resources.
My workers are doing a great job at clearing jungle and building roads near high-producing cities. The cash will be flowing.
I upgraded many of our musketmen in frontier cities. I gave them rifles and had my military advisor train them on their use. Ill continue in this fashion so the Russians wont have any bright ideas about attacking.
Finally, I turned up our science rate by 10%. This gave us a slight deficit, but my programs will make this a non-issue very soon. Now, it will take 12 years to discover Steam Engines instead of 16 (6 turns vs. 8 turns).
1766 (1):
Beijing builds a marketplace and happiness abounds. I would love to build a bank, but I sense great projects becoming available. I have Beijing work on a palace in the hopes I can change it into a great wonder soon. Given the city has reached its maximum size, I switch workers to maximize production.
I caught a few workers running about. I had my Minister of Interior give them some proper tasks.
We now have positive cash flow. Nothing like a bit of tweaking.
1768 (2):
Met again with the Aztecs. I sold them physics for 2 gold/turn and GAVE them the blueprints for Democracy. I need them to be making some money so they can become a viable market.
1772 (4):
Met again with the Aztecs. I sold them magnetism for 7 gold/turn and their ancient world map.
1776 (6):
We have discovered steam engines. We have but one coal resource, but it is enough for now. We can now begin a rail system.
I am torn. Ideally, I would like to study electricity, but my Science Minister tells me it will take 16 years (8 turns). However, Medicine will only take 10 years (5 turns), and Ill need it anyway for Scientific Method and straight through to Electronics and Motorized Transport. I decide to opt for Medicine. What if I get sick anyway?
1778 (7):
Catherine calls to gloat that Moscow built Adam Smiths Trading. My economic side is jealous, but to study economics and compete for that was just not worthwhile. I start Babylon building the Pentagon now that it has the major infrastructure pieces. I would like to change this to a Huge Dam later.
1784 (10):
Ive been reelected for a second term and right when we discover Medicine. Now only 12 years to Electricity and I opt for that technology to study.
1786 (11):
Catherine calls again to tell me that the Russians are building Universal Suffrage. Not needed for us right now you old cow. Wait til we kick your collective butts.
Economy is such that now I can up the science rate again. One less turn to electricity could make a difference.
Almost completed road to the Aztecs.
1792 (14):
The road to the Aztecs is complete. We offer furs and receive 4 gold/turn and 1 gold/turn for Silk. I give them gems as well to be nice. They are still furious. Ill wait a few turns before I give them more luxuries.
1794 (15):
My Science Minister was struck by lightning while flying a kite and now we have electricity. Finally, I can use these lamps. Replaceable Parts is only 10 years away.
1796 (16):
The Russians and Aztecs sign a Mutual Protection Pact. What will this entail for us?
1802 (19):
Gave the Aztecs Ivory. STILL furious.
1804 (20):
My last year in office before the new elections. A lot happened during this year:
Discovered Replaceable Parts. Our workers now are MUCH faster and I can upgrade. I only have enough to upgrade a few riflemen to infantry, but our economics are doing so well that we should have enough over my successors time to upgrade fully. Industrialization is next and only 8 years (4 turns) away! Factories will be very nice.
It was time to revisit all of the deals I made 20 years ago:
Silks: From dyes + 1gold/turn now getting 50 gold/turn
Wines: From 47 to 50 gold/turn
Ivory: From 47 to 50 gold/turn
Peace for another 20 turns
MPP for world map and 11 gold
For the Aztecs, I offered them horses and they gave me 5 gold/turn.
I was hoping that the Russians would give us some older tech, but no big deal, my successors can use the extra money to continue the upgrade process.
It was a wonderful presidency, and I look forward to my life in the private sector giving speeches for exorbitant amounts of money.
OK, team, were making progress. Some thoughts:
1. Upgrade when and where you can to infantry to make the Russians think twice about breaking our agreements.
2. Keep an eye on the Palace in Beijing and the Pentagon in Babylon. There will be some better wonders for them to produce soon.
3. The building program in the cities around Beijing and Babylon has paid off. Soon, they could probably benefit from factories (available in 4 turns).
4. I think that Catherine may start offering outdated tech with luxury deals. Thats OK, especially if we can get the Theory of Evolution. This wonder should be a high priority not for what it gets for us but mainly for what it will deny the Russians.
5. Tech thoughts Id look into scientific method after industrialization. In fact, Id stay on the bottom part of the tree and after Scientific Method go for Atomic Theory and the Electronics. They are all needed for Motorized transportation, so why not make a straight line to the one that can give us Hoover Dam before Babylon finishes the Pentagon.
6. Dont forget to renew all deals with the Russians when they are up. This especially holds true for wines as the Aztecs may soon have wines to sell.
7. I stayed away from a MPP with the Aztecs. I was afraid that the Russians would attack them and force us into was vs. the Russians. The next person MAY wish to risk one for 20 turns if it could help their demeanor toward us.
8. Armies are a good idea, and I'd start a few more in Beijing once it finishes Theory of Evolution.
9. No rush for the Pentagon as I don't think we'll have to put armies together until we have Mech Infantry and/or modern armor. We can build it later perhaps in a city with nice production thanks to a factory, the Hoover Dam, and maybe even a hospital.
Thats it. Happy civving to the next player.
