How about laptops? Don't they struggle with heat dissapation?

Yeah, that's why I referred to 'workstations'. I'd be more careful running a laptop 24/7 at 100% utilization, though I think in most cases it can still be done.

My Laptop did fine for 3 or 4 months, but then i had to replace the power supply. The laptop itself didn't have any overheating problems.

Imma try and bring my old computer (now my father's) onboard, its only a PIII 800mhz though.

I would be a little careful with laptops, you could lower the maximum cpu use to 70% or so to keep it cooler..

I'll have my laptop on less than 50% and it will overheat, especially since it's summer with a warmer ambient temperature, so you really have to watch them.

My laptop runs as a webserver, which means it is on 24/7. As i said, except for the power supply, there haven't been any problems.
It is an old model, though. Only 800Mhz.

If I just leave mine on it will heat up (fairly warm to the touch, much more so than normal), even with F@H not running, and when I tried to leave it on once or twice it was hot to the touch, something which I doubt is benefical to the computer. :p

I let mine run 24/7 at about 35%. I had it around 45% in winter, but now it's warmer so I dropped the speed. It gets warm, but I'm nowhere close to causing damage. Takes around a week to finish a WU, but it helps.

My output is going to slow down dramatically since I have purchased Elder Scrolls Oblivion.

I tried running this on my laptop, but it got so hot, it practically almost caught my chair on fire, and the fan was going so hard it was making the machine shake. I think maybe it was running at 85%? When I get a real desktop (one of those high end machines for Music Recording), I'll start to fold

We run on the laptop 24/7, but we set the laptop on a grill to keep it well ventilated. It's warm, but not hot.

Work units have deadlines, so if you run too slowly, you might not actually be helping. Well, you probably still are helping, but not as much as if you get the work unit in on time. Apparently the number of 'dead' work units is pretty low, most work units are returned on time.

My laptops v. toasty always.. a real testicle tanner!

Does a computer run more efficiently if it's cold/cool? Would placing the laptop on (covered) ice improve its performance?

i guess, or just get better fans?/have a colder room. My tower is pretty much always in the shade but it still sometimes heats up.

Well, I'm travelling at the moment so I've paused the folding until I get back to the office. The laptop is having a well deserved break from folding. It can start again on Monday.

It shouldn't make any difference except that it will crash if it gets too hot. But up until that point I don't think speed is affected..

edit - I may be wrong about that, I did some looking around and some say that computers run slower when too hot, so I have no idea. I do know they'll crash though, I have a friend whose laptop crashes constantly because it gets too hot.

Well, that's just as well, because I was having weird vision of thawing peas under the laptop for dinner, etc.

Ugh. My celeron herd has been off the network since last Friday, the power outage apparently took down the switch they were all plugged in to. :(

 Cool. And while the celerons were disconnected from the network, they apparently were still doing the folding, because I showed 939 points from this last update - they were all waiting to turn their work in. :)
