So I can decide whether a given history book is reputable? Standard media reviews are usually a better gauge of excitingness of the book.

Also what non-obvious presses publish good work in history (the obvious ones being major UPs)?

Well - the best journals for reviews are just the top journals in general. I don't know the top history journals but I'm sure that this can be found out with a bit of Internet trawling, or simply by asking a history professor.

Top humanities publishers other than the university presses will include Routledge, Ashgate, Brepols, Brill, Olms, Blackwell, Belles Lettres, Aschendorff, Palgrave, Lang, and I'm sure many others. There are of course many more which have a very good reputation but deal only with certain narrower subject areas.
