Second-best would probably be Midway.

I haven't seen A Bridge Too Far or Saving Private Ryan though, from what I hear those are probably even better though.

EDIT: Darn it, I forgot about Apocalypse Now.

I haven't seen a film that glorifies war, so they are all anti-war.

Many of those above ARE anti war films, e.g Das Boot, Apocalypse Now, Saving Private Ryan, Remagen, to a certain extent.

Saving Private Ryan. I have heard a lot about each film in the list, but I cannot vote fairly as I can't remember watching them... except the Great Escape, that should be remade with modern technologies

The Great Escape can't count as a war movie.

The only ones of those I've seen are: The Great Escape, Saving Private Ryan, Apocalypse Now, and about an hour of A Bridge Too Far, before my DVD player broke on me. EDIT: Oh, and the Russian Roulette scene in Deer Hunter.

I think A Bridge Too Far is the best, based on the little I saw.

It's not really a movie, but it was produced like one. Band of Brothers is great. It's currently playing on the History Channel, in case you missed the first run on HBO.

Im a big fan of BOB as well. Last Monday's ep has to be my favorite.

Why not? It's got Germans with rubbish accents, Brits with a stiff upper lip and Gung-ho yanks. War film.

Also, the book is very good, the movie is almost completely based on it.

Wheres Black Hawk Down? That movie kicked ass - it was like the first half hour of Saving Private Ryan stretched over 2 hours of film.

Ok, seriously now. Its got to be either Saving Private Ryan or Das Boot.

Sure, its set in a war, but its about an escape, not about war.

Battle scenes are a must for a war movie.

Lawrence of Arabia would be mine, but as it is perhaps not the type of war film in the theme of this thread. I am struggling to take my pick from the poll list or add any of my own. Most of the films are very watchable, however there are some which I would have to be in the mood for to watch.

Of those listed, I have seen Apocalypse Now, Platoon, Das Boot, The Bridge over the River Kwai which I would call anti-war films (I have missed a lot of the mentioned films). All good ones. Die Brücke (The Bridge) is also excellent.
