the answer to this question is so contextual. i think the question being asked is "what do black people want to be called by white people?" in america, 'negro' and 'colored' used to be polite terms used by whites who did not want to use the other n-word. but, since those words were used while segregation was still in effect, they captured a segregationist hue. after the civil rights movement, those words became much more offensive for obvious reasons. as far as i can tell, in my corner of the country blacks like white people to call them 'black' or 'african-american.' i personally think 'black' sounds cool. in the south usa, maybe things are different. i think in the sudan, 'blacks' are christian, and 'arabs' are muslim, even though the colors are not that different.
what is significant is that america now has a black president and i think that is awesome. definitely good for our karma.
