"The gentleman in the lobby would like to order a map". If your hotel isn't as classy, you can say, "the bloke in the lobby etc". If you needed to be more specific than that, you could describe his clothes and/or call him black, your choice. 99 times out of 100, "the gentleman" would suffice.

I don't mind people referring to me as "the indian guy" or whatever.

Hey I geniunley didn't know this game was popular among any blacks, now why do you need to accuse somebody of that. All I see at stores are blacks buying Madden and NBA live so I really had no evidence to the contrary until now.

Sorry but statics show that blacks tend to favor sports games more, and I just thought it was a good thing to see more are trying out different games. Don't be ridiculous. If there are 100 people in a lobby and the most obvious and recognizable physical difference between them and the one you mean is a darker complexion, there is nothing wrong with using that to signify what you mean.

I think that's because it's easier to say bad things with the world pretos than negros. "Aquele preto safado me roubou" is easier than "aquele negro safado de roubou" to use in derrobatory ways. Calling someone "preto" is pretty much like going to the USA and calling some random black "nigge-r."

What's the difference? "Negro" is a easy as "preto" to say.

I think "preto" became derogatory simply because it was used for a longer time, and thus there were many racist jokes and expressions that used it. Like "preto safado", as you said.
