In Brazil nowadays black people prefer to be called "negros" (portuguese: negros) than "blacks" (portuguese: pretos). Seriously. Though the official census term is still "preto", or black, it is increasingly considered an offensive word.

In France "black" is the everyday word. Not the French translation, mind you, but the English word "black". "Noir" is considered obsolete and very mildly offensive.

Yeah, somewhat conversely, in Spain the usual word is negro (pronounced with a short 'e' obviously) which just means 'black'.

Incidentally the usual word for gays seemed to be 'gay' now, as in el matrimonio gay for gay marriage.

I think that's because it's easier to say bad things with the world pretos than negros. "Aquele preto safado me roubou" is easier than "aquele negro safado de roubou" to use in derrobatory ways. Calling someone "preto" is pretty much like going to the USA and calling some random black "nigge-r."

Try going with no identifier, and if no one understands who you mean and aks you to clarify go ahead and say the black one.

Gangsta

Seriously tho, i never met a black person, but i think i'd avoid calling him the equivalent of black, because it gets translated as "negru" which sounds like the n-word. :crazyeye: Of course, that's not considered offensive to us, we do have other offensive terms tho. :D

Nope, and the only black people that i saw in real life was this guy who is on the local city soccer team and other 2 who were foreign students in the uni campus. That's about it. :crazyeye:
But anyway, why would they come here ? Or better yet, why would anyone come here ?
