Bob Geldof - nationalising the charities

Kind of stupid for Geldof to say there's no AIDS in Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch when the New Zealand AIDS Foundation has counseling and research centers in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.

Did he say that "there's no AIDS in Aukland... ect"? No. He said they don't DIE of AIDS in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch which is true. They don't die because they can afford the meagre sum for the tablets. In Africa they can't afford the tablets so they die. Don't slag him off, at least he's doing something.

Seconded. He may get on your tits but he has devoted years to this so questioning his commitment is facile.

The ultimate cause of death is poverty and ignorance. Until the trade systems that perpetuate the situation are adressed it just a band aid. Wait a minite, isnt that what he even called it!

Indeed NGO's do work better than government agencies because they typically address 1 problem, rather than having to dole out money to multiple causes. More can be done when there is a specific target.

Man, that US sure stinks. I mean, its two most wealthiest capitalists just have a charity worth 31Billion fighting AIDS in africa. We don't give ANYTHING to poor people.

What a silly man. The way to get people, and particularly governments, to do something for you that does not benefit them is to sell the idea to them, not indulge in foolish browbeating and such tommyrot. I don't see his full divestment of his goods and chattels.

He should have stuck to being knocked out at Skrewdriver gigs.

And? Who says they or anyone else deserves anything.

If you feel like giving, go ahead and give. But don't make it out that everybody has to, they should, but no one has to.

And this Geldof chap sounds like he just talking from his high horse. Notice how he was a "paid speaker and a lavish corporate convention".

Why settle for 0.7%? How arbitrary. Why doesn't the U.N. just say that every country "should" be giving 5% of their GNP to help out Africa? Then we can look ever worse.

The moment where band aid exploded into a worldwide gig was when he shouted "give us your fekin money" live on bbc, so really he has made the berating thing work. Indeed it is all he has done, its not like this is an aberation.

Does AIDS not kill you now?
Bright day
It never killed you. But immunity is fairly new field. It weakens you. Which will kill. I heard growing fungi on eyes is not very pleasent. These pills temporarily strengthten your defence by taking them (though I think that if you stop taking them you are worse than before, or am I wrong?). Temporarily as in -as long as you keep swallowing them by the dozens.

As was demonstrated, that was monumentally ineffectual. It may have curbed the heartpangs of some guilty musicians, but it did not help Ethiopia in any real way.

Furthermore, a quaint popular music concert is very different from dealing with states. He is a naive rotter, but it is par for the course in the business.

His big initiative of last year has gone into dust, also, crushed by real priorities and world affairs.

Not in any way? An extra 25 b us pa is not chichenfeed, and if the trade stuff is still plausible it is worth many times that.

Not saying it worked, but no-one on earth has done more...

Compared to what is necessary, it certainly provides fine poultry nutrition; ye can also throw money down a well ad infinitum with no effect if other steps are not also taken.

I'd say a lot of people have spent their entire lives working for that cause, and others like it, with nowhere near the level of lauding, backslapping, ego-tripping and self congratulation on self righteousness. There are a lot of other pieces to the puzzle apart from the scruffy Irish hound. I can think of several on the political side who have, and then there are the faceless.

There are those who give two pennies.
