British couple sentenced to prison for kissing in public

Personally I would jail people for kissing in public anywhere. PDA (Public Displays of Affection) makes everyone uncomfortable. Maybe losing an arm or two would teach them a lesson.

Speak for yourself. Doesn't bother me in the least. And... if a couple does go too far for my taste, nobody is stopping me from looking elsewhere.

O, shock, horror, tourist ended up in jail for failing to respect local customs and violate the law.

No - the shock and horror is more because of this:

I don't have as much an issue with a no public kissing law as I do with a country that deems second-hand testimony of a 2-year-old girl sufficient to put people in prison.

Kissing in public is no big deal - but showing off your underwear in public *should* be clamped down on... with violence.
Absolutely. All those women, showing bra straps and thong lines... nobody wants to see that. :vomit:

Wait, you did mean women, right?

One of my professor vacationed in Dubai (and a couple other parts of the U.A.E) during spring break (and the following week, as he left the TAs in charge when we first came back).

Well, we can hardly chastise Turkey for being a fundamentalist Islamic state. The problem there, as in India, is poverty in certain parts of the country, rather than institutionalised dogma.

The source of the shock is that the local customs are primitive and barbaric - you wouldn't expect that in a country which calls itself modern and which wants to base its future prosperity on tourism.

Yes, I am aware that kissing in public is the pinnacle of civilization.

Stop trying to play devil's advocate, it's boring. It isn't the pinnacle of civilisation, but that doesn't mean banning it isn't ridiculous.

Far from it. Your country would have to be really backward and crappy for it to ban kissing in public.

Winner was talking about the local customs, meaning he has a problem with the local culture as well as the legal system.

And, by the way, I find that playing devil's advocate is much easier than trying to explain and argue for what I really believe in, so yeah.

Your culture would have to be really backward and crappy for it to demonise kissing in public. "Backwards and crappy" was the key point of my post :p

So what? The local culture is really crappy in this respect. The local culture in some parts of Alabama is racism, the local culture in Saudi Arabia is homophobic, why would one not have a problem with them?

Your god would have to be really backward and crappy for it to forbid kissing in public. :smug:

Hardly. There are things which should be kept underwraps for a harmonious, moral society. Sex and such things should not be advertised out in public.

The problem with you Westerners is that you think everyone should just do whatever they want. In that case, you cease to have a society.

Tailless, leave agent-provocateauring to Karalysia.
