So here in the UK we have the PCC elections today. Nobody apart from a few Tories seems to want them, but they are happening anyhow, so are you gonna voting in them today? And if you wanna tell, whose getting your vote?

Also a few Mayor elections (one in Bristol, very near to me) and by-elections in Cardiff South and Penarth, Corby and Manchester Central!

Personally I have been an voted, only had the PCC vote. Voted Labour. Gave my 2nd pref to the Lib Dems.

For anyone intrested whats going on:

Voters are heading to the polls to elect the first police and crime commissioners for England and Wales.

The elections are taking place in 41 police force areas - except in London - from 07:00 GMT until 22:00 on Thursday.

The new PCCs, which are set to replace police authorities, will set spending plans and have the power to "hire and fire" chief constables.

The results are expected to be announced on Friday, with elected PCCs assuming office from 22 November.

The government set up the commissioner role in what it describes as an effort to make police more accountable, with a single "figurehead" monitoring and ensuring performance.

As well as recruiting - or sacking - chief constables, commissioners will set out local policing priorities, report annually on progress and set out their force's budget and community safety grants.

Ministers say that the cost of commissioners and police and crime panels will be no greater than the cost of running existing police authorities. Commissioners are likely to be paid between £65,000 and £100,000 per year depending on the police force area.

Opponents say the move is a waste of money at a time when budgets are being cut and staff laid off.

The move to elect PCCs has been described as the biggest shake-up of policing for almost 50 years.

Labour and the Conservatives are fielding candidates in all 41 force areas.

The Liberal Democrats are not centrally supporting candidates but have not barred their members from standing. Lib Dems and members of the UK Independence Party are standing in just over half of seats.

Elections are taking place in all parts of England and Wales except London, where Mayor Boris Johnson and the home secretary both have oversight of the Metropolitan Police.

As well as elections for PCCs, voters in Cardiff South and Penarth, Corby and Manchester Central are also voting in parliamentary by-elections.

nvm, I should learn to read

Really I would have thought the role of the government was to do this and not the people. The people vote out a government if they don't like things are being run and that will include law and order.

Yeah, these PCCs will have a lot of power, and due to nobody really being interested in them, virtually no accountability. I don't see what's to gain from PCC elections.

Predicting very low turn out for them as well. If it wasn't for the Mayor and by-elections I think turnout would be as little as 15-20% With those going on, maybe 35%? Nowhere near what a democratic election should have.

Still, we got a vote so reccomend people use it.

I've always thought it dangerous to vote if you have no idea what you're voting about. I have a polling card my county PCC and I haven't the first idea what that actually entails.

I was going to vote, but when I read my postal vote I realised my assumption they would be independent of political parties was completely wrong.
So I'm not going to vote at all.

The point is to give high paid sinecure jobs to members of the 3 big political parties.

It makes me laugh when these people talk about how they'll cut down on waste and bureaucracy in the police. If they want to do that, all they have to do is resign as soon as they're elected.

I'm glad we won't have this nonsense in Northern Ireland.

It will be interesting to see how it will pan out. It's been absolutely derided by the left (as we've seen), but i think give it a shot.

..oh and i haven't voted. i've got better things to do ;)

Voter apathy clearly evident on Civ Forums!;)

Just seen on twitter that the Electoral Reform Society predicting turn out as low as 18.5%!!

I'm boycotting it as I don't think it should be an elected position. Hopefully low voter turnout will make this a one-time thing.

If they were independent of the political parties I would've, but they aren't.

Just went and voted both for myself and as a proxy. I had the last two voting slips from the first book of one hundred. Turnout exceedingly low.

I had a postal vote for this idiocity, so I sent in a spoiled ballot paper...

Isn't low turnout precisely what the Tories want?

No idea... I assume they would want high turnout so that their idea isn't seen as massive flop, but that may just be entry level politicking.

I didn't really see the point, so I didn't vote.

Candidate one would like less crime, Candidate two also wants less crime. Candidate three is going to be tough on crime! Meh.
