Effective immediately all technologies are no longer sharable. Designs can still be shared and with the update will come dramatic revisions to the tech tree. It was either this or raise the costs of tech to ridiculous levels. Collaboration on technologies also forbidden from here on out, as on designs, though feel free to give someone money to make a design for you. Just be aware of the risks of enriching others.
If you have already sent orders, and they conflict with this or overspend on different techs, you will be reimbursed. Similarly, a large number of technologies are going generic, and if you spent on these technologies, the excess will go into your bank.
As stated MANY, MANY times already, technologies are not the key to the whole world and unlimited power. Unfortunately, judging by behavior, orders, and conversations, it's clear that no one believes me, therefore this extreme action is quite needed. You brought this upon yourselves.
IMPORTANT EDIT:
Since i have more free time than I expected before I can get home and actually update, it's time for ELABORATION!
The Tech Tree as initially demonstrated on the thread, and stated many times before, has only been an opening salvo into the way technologies work in this NES. From the beginning, I instituted it more or less as a placeholder in order to slowly introduce new ideas such as the previously discussed Special Research Projects. I have in the past raised prices to discourage exploitation and unreasonable tech races/alliances, but clearly this has not been enough. Therefore, I am instituting by RULE what I had hoped would be the norm from the beginning: Emphasizing the trade of DESIGNS over technologies. This is a far more realistic manner of technology distribution and was always intended to ultimately be the norm as the NES progressed. Due to events, which should be obvious, I have decided to far more abruptly implement and use the latter stages of my tech tree. Thankfully all the changes below still correspond with the overall background tech advancement tree that I've created, so the only change this represents is eliminating the ability to trade technologies and research them openly in front of all other eyes. Please note that while you CAN design a bunch of things, you may not actually NEED to. Setting priorities is what you need to focus on, and remember, your loyalty should be to your nation and people NOT to arbitrary allies that you've assembled for random advancement.
Here's what actually will be happening with the update:
1. (Probably) All Army Technologies will be eliminated. Armored research will instead rely on experimentation with designs, which are going to have a set cost per point, which'll be substantially cheaper than the current set cost. Any special improvements will of course arrive via Special Research Project. It should be noted that while designs should be relatively reasonably priced now, construction is going to be the .
2. Almost all navy technologies will be eliminated, and most of the planned ones that were going to be added onto the tree will be replaced as Special Research Projects. All naval designs will be set at a base cost of 20 EP per point. Similarly, I will be adding two new classes of vessel, the first designed to be a lighter craft than a Destroyer. The Rios-Class River Boat will be the only ship in this new category. The carrier class will be available immediately, but will be more expensive to design than other vessels.
3. All air technologies will be eliminated. Aircraft designs will be available to all, but aerodynamics will be completely eliminated for the time being. In order to advance the technology available, you must experiment with designs, whether yours or someone else's. This can be wargaming, fighting, or any other of test scenario. Similarly, aircraft designs will continue to cost hefty prices which can be lowered through growing production and experimentation. This is how all planes were supposed to work from the beginning, and I only added them to the tech tree against my better judgement. Lesson: Never go against your instincts.
4. All technologies remaining (not many) will be combined into a post elsewhere, and the prices will be raised upon them all. Tread carefully.
SECOND EDIT: 5. After talking to luckymoose, I had a thought. People who have made their own designs, or have certain techs that are being eliminated, will be given extra "free" points to distribute into new designs of that class. You will receive one "free" point for each improved design you make (making a bunch of crappy ships or tanks will not receive said bonus). Furthermore, the free points will not increase the overall cost of the unit. Not only will this free me from any guilt of not refunding your expenses, but it'll reward those who design their own stuff. While you're perfectly free to mooch off your allies, be warned, your allies are getting better and better, and they may not always be your allies.
This also means that you can expect an earlier arrival for SRPs, the first of which probably would not have begun arriving until the late 1920s. Enjoy.
