Capto Iugulum

From: Republic of Argentina
To: World

The Republic of Argentina would like to thank the nations who sent athletes to the 1916 Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. We hope that the gala and pageantry of these last Olympics becomes the new standard for Olympic ceremony.

Argentina votes for London to be the host of the 1920 Olympic Games.

Olympic Vote Tally (disclaimer: only went over it twice) (covers up to and including post #3545)

Amsterdam: 9
London: 5
Constantinople: 4

Guangxi votes London.

The United Kingdom is not voting and would like, instead, to propose the following:

For too long now the Olympics have been a political tool of aggrandizement and division. Governments, for whatever reason, intervene directly in the Olympic Committee to vote for the host city of the next Olympics. What is most disappointing, however, is that often these votes are political statements, employed by governments in order to make a point or to slight their opponents. This was never any more evident than when Brazil abused the practice to ban half the world's athletes from participating in the Olympics. There have been other boycotts and machinations as well. This is unacceptable.

We propose that the votes be given to nongovernmental organizations in each nation, the national olympic committee that is completely and wholly separated from the state. They do the hard work of selecting and training the athletes anyway, in giving them the resources they need to compete. Why not give these organizations the privilege to choose where to send their athletes?

The time for political partisanship in the Olympics must end. The Olympics should be a symbol of peace, not petty divisiveness and scandal.

We thank you for your time.

The Vinlandsk Olympiska Kommitté is already an organization which, while not wholly separated from the government, is tasked with choosing the ideal Olympic location based on the quality of its venues and the city's assessed ability to successfully host such an event.

Hear, hear! Let the Olympics become apolitical! While non-governmental organizations are far from perfect they have an excellent track record of neutrality in regards to the Olympics.

We must agree with the UK. Using the Olympics for political reasons is unacceptable.

It does seem to us that it would be an improvement if the offices of our statesmen were divested of their annoying task of discussing sport, and if the judgement of our diplomats were less clouded with such trivial affairs. It has long been the opinion of the Confederate government that sport is of no importance as a matter of state, and we firmly agree with the notion that the venue for the 1920 Olympics should be chosen on the basis of merit and prevented from cluttering up our desks.

No need to cry over genocidal regimes being excluded. Brazil must be the only sane nation left. We banned athletes from a single nation, not half the world.

Brazil is nothing more then another imperialist nation using "democracy" to spread it's influence.

Anyway, I'd like to announce the following treaty:

Treaty of Jefferson

RECOGNIZING the mutual interest of the signatory parties, the United States of America; and the Empire of Japan, the Republic of Hawaii, the Republic of Jacksonia, the Grand Republic of Florida, the Republic of Aztlan, the Kingdom of Peru, and the Republic of Chile, henceforth referred to as The Pacific Concord, have sent representatives to the city of Jefferson and have agreed to the following terms:

1. The Pacific Concord shall recognize the government based in Denver as the sole legal government of the United States of America, henceforth referred to as the Denver Government.

2. The Denver Government shall recognize the sovereignty of the Republic of Jacksonia, the Grand Republic of Florida, and the Republic of Aztlan.

3. The United States of America shall be admitted into the Pacific Concord, under the representation of the Denver Government, and shall agree to all terms of membership and receive full membership.

4. The Denver Government (and all legal successors) shall reserve the right to withdraw from the Pacific Concord at any time.

5. This treaty shall be binding and go into effect immediately.

Signed, Robert Wallace, President of the United States of America

Consider this the less than 24 hour warning. At this time I am going to start putting the timer in my signature, if possible. That should make wondering abotu when orders are due that much easier for all involved.

OOC: Right now, I don't believe it works if it is placed in your sig, although I may be wrong about that. Also, the mods have said they frown upon its use in signatures anyway.

IC: Jacksonia will only agree to any long-term relationship deal with either American government once peace has been restored to the North American continent.

Well it works in signatures, and it's highly useful. I'll keep it until some troll complains about it.

After further discussion, Jacksonia agrees to Article 3 of the above treaty. The remainder will likely be signed in 1917.
We encourage Florida to do the same.

To: Pacific Concord Nations
From: Konungariket Vinland

We request your nations to not involve yourselves in matters relating to the Allied Territories of America. It is the view of the King and Riksdag of Vinland that the Second Union has formed a legitimate government over what remains of the United States of America. General Wallace's forces perpetuate the old military dictatorship. In years past, we supported him for his promise to maintain order in the American Northwest until such a time that the American Federal Government could re-establish itself. Now that the Second Union has done so, he reneged upon this promise, betraying the General's new intentions.

As such, we suggest to the nations of the Pacific Concord that the Allied Territories of America are not recognized or admitted into their alliance structure, lest they trigger a re-escalation of the conflict in North America, which promises to otherwise wind its way towards a conclusion and a lasting peace.

The Confederation denounces in the strongest possible terms whatever downright irresponsible and utterly immoral support the Pacific Concord will lend to the most militaristic and most utterly illegitimate remnants of the tyrranical and oppressive former American government. We may have been snubbed, but we know this sort of politics without conscience when we see it, and we urge the rest of Europe to join us in our denunciation. If states in Europe - God forbid - see fit to usurp America's democracy and liberty also, in cooperation with these white bashi-bazouks, they have our assurance that the Confederation will not stand idle.

Ten-thousand thundering typhoons, the United Kingdom actually agrees with the Confederation.
