In Albuquerque as in actually in the city? Those things are not small, I never thought they would get that close to habitation.

I dunno about N.M., but mountain lions wander into the California suburbs like once or twice a year.

Yes, in the area of the city that brushes up against the mountain. The Sandia Mtns. (~10,600') form the eastern border of the city and housing has pushed pretty hard in to the foot hills in many places. Bobcats, bear and deer are the more usual visitors, but this summer folks posted pics of cougars stalking their yards.

:shake: at people who encroach on the animals' habitat and then wonder why they get "visitors".

It's like the people of Calgary don't seem able to connect the dots between further expansion, allowing backyard chicken coops, and increased coyote "visits" that coincide with chickens and pets being killed. Calgary is in the foothills of the Rockies; what did they think would happen?

Stoney recovered from his catnip. GPS he went to the school from 9am to 7pm the other day.

He can find his way home though. It's about a kilometer from his home.

Dexter. Getting old and scruffy. Had him 13 years in December and he was full grown then.

Under that blanket is a heat pad.

 to Dexter.

Maddy's co-opted my spare computer chair. I don't mind if she uses it. Someone should. I bought it in case the one I usually use breaks past my ability to fix it.

I'm excited to help my friend buy new stuffs for her new kitten tomorrow. 2 months old, male, black/white. Will post pictures if she allows it :D

Dog leads owner to cat stuck 100ft down Cornish mine shaft

A lucky cat was rescued by firefighters after falling 100ft (30m) down a mineshaft in Cornwall - and it was all thanks to a quick-thinking dog.

After six days of searching, Mowgli's owner Michele Rose said she had "almost given up hope" of finding her missing pet.

But she said she saw her dog Daisy "going berserk", running in and out of woods near their home in Harrowbarrow.

Daisy's intervention led to the rescue of her feline friend, Ms Rose said.

Daisy guided her along a footpath toward the Prince of Wales old mine workings, she said, before "stopping dead in her tracks" next to the mineshaft.

"Daisy is a superstar, she's an amazing dog.

"Without Daisy doing that Mowgli could still be down there, that's for sure," Ms Rose said.

"She was persistent in making me follow her, it was amazing."

The RSPCA and Cornwall Fire and Rescue were called but it was "too dark" on the first night to access the mineshaft, the RSPCA said.

The next morning the team, led by RSPCA animal rescue officer Stephen Findlow, spotted Mowgli, who was 100ft down - but remarkably uninjured - and he was pulled to safety.

The family has another cat, Baloo, who greeted Mowgli after he was pulled up.

Ms Rose said she adopted kittens Mowgli and Baloo in December 2022 and oversaw a gentle introduction to Daisy, who was already resident.

She added: "Daisy was already a year old when the kittens arrived and they have all been inseparable ever since.

"She is quite matriarchal and puts up with them, they love her and she's very protective of them."

Dexter doing his thing.

Stoney wasn't to keen on red dot toy. Dexter inherited it and loves it age 14ish.

If the weather holds BBQ tonight. Kora my BIL cat is also whoring himself in the sun.

The average human reaction time to visual stimulus is ~250 milliseconds, with a range around 150-300 milliseconds. One 2015 study using college students (people aged 18-22, I suppose?) found a mean visual reaction time of 190ms. A 1997 study of minor league professional baseball players found a mean visual reaction time of 239ms.

A cat's visual reaction time is in the neighborhood of 50 milliseconds, with a range of 20-70ms.
