Civ V - One World Speculation Thread!

I'm not sure if the second expansion would require G&K - what was it like for IV and III?

Warlords only had a few game changing features like Great Generals and Vassal States, and those were included in BTS. I believe that BTS didn't inlcude Warlords civs or scenarios but all of the introduced mechanics. So I'd expect OW to include faith and great prophets, espionage, etc. but not the civilizations of Gods and Kings.

In my opinion it's more likely that an announcement will be made between 15 days and 1 month considering that Civ 5 Gold was available only a few days ago. 2K will try to capitalize on the new release and then announce Civ V:OW. It makes more sense from a commercial point of view.

They tend to announce things on Thursdays, keep that in mind. As I have said, I think it's going to be tomorrow, around 2pm GMT, so around 18 and a quarter hours from now. That said, it may not be, and if it isn't tomorrow, then I'd be waiting for the next Thursday, around 2pm GMT to get excited.

Now, it's interesting that you bring up Civ V Gold Edition. Do you know the date that Civ IV Gold Edition was released? The 17th of July, with Civ IV Beyond the Sword released in the following week (the day after in Australia). To me that seems to indicate that they are changing tactic slightly here, announcing it first to spike interest before giving us the big news.

We'll see, I'm fairly confident today is the day based on their previous patterns.

Ah, now the hedging begins. :goodjob:

Announcement is tomorrow, ... or maybe next Thursday ... or the next. But definitely a Thursday ... unless it's on a Tuesday ... or some other day.

And whatever day it is, it'll be at 2:00 GMT ... unless maybe its earlier ... or later ... or 2:00 in a different time zone.

Anyway, you can count on it being announced ... whenever Firaxis wants to announce it. :crazyeye:

It will almost certainly be on a Thursday. They announced it around 2:00 GMT last year, but for the Civ IV expansions it was much later in the day from what I can tell.

As for "hedging", this is from the original post on the topic from the 14th of December:

As for the release, they generally are released about 4 months after announcement, so I'd guess it would be the same this time. As such I'd expect an announcement on:

Announcement: February 14th or February 21st 2013

...or any Thursday following, but these two seem the most likely. Then simply add around 4 months. So yeah, based on what we know, I'd expect to see an expansion around June/July next year and announced on the 14th or 21st of February 2013.

The reason for the two dates was mainly due to Valentines day, as explained in other posts. Here is a post from the 14th of February in Australia, but before the 14th in America:

There is a small chance that there will be an announcement today, but with today being Valentines day and all I fully expect an expansion to be announced a week from now (Thursday the 21st of February).

Have a nice day everybody!

I today added a guess at a rough time based on the announcement of Gods & Kings.

Long story short, I am quite confident that it will be announced in just over 18 hours time.

Sounds good to me the sooner the better! :)

I'd say people's confidences is fueled purely on the pattern of the previous two games in the series and their expansion pack, which were pretty much released exactly a year later, and if the rule "4 months prior to release" works, then we should see it in February either way, and seeing as this is the 2nd last Thursday of February, I'd say chances are pretty good, and I hope so, we ALL know about the 2nd ep they might as well just release the press release.

I'd think it would. I mean, you'd expect religion and espionage to be incorporated into any new features or civs that a new expansion has. They wouldn't make a version that includes religion/espionage as well as a version that doesn't. It'd be a waste of development hours, requiring completely different balancing. I'd imagine it'd be the same for any DLC, if we see some in the future.

Most exps for anything ever that i've experienced don't require previous dlc or exps. That's why it's so brilliant that they've just released it all in one shiny gold package. Consumers say oooh, this expansion looks good, but i need the base game first. Well all the extra content already out only costs £15 more in a bundle, what the hell.

And that is the ? before profit.

I didn't know Civ IV Gold was released a week before BtS and this is certainly a good point. Let's hope it's today the announcement and not weeks later.

3 hours to go before a probable announcement. Could be any time today in America though... let's hope it's in 3 hours.

Well, last year it was two hours from the time of your last post (i.e. midnight AEST).

You may be correct, I may have a units error here. Give me a moment.

Actually, I think you are correct. I messed up my time stamps on forum posts. It was actually 1 pm GMT.

1 hour, 10 minutes to go... let's hope!

So... is it 10 minutes? :mischief:
But to be honest, I also hope it will come soon

T-minus negative 10 minutes...?

They announced it 5 minutes after 1 last time, nothing yet... Doesn't look like anything is happening. There is something on the 2K blog from today, but Civ V it is not. Sorry, there is actually nothing on the 2K blog from today, there may still be an announcement incoming...

...maybe...

IT'S HERE!!! :D:D:D

We are pleased to announce the latest expansion pack for Civilization V, called "One World".

Key Features and New Civs

Many of you have been speculating about what "One World" could mean. Well, we've decided to "even the playing field".. and removed all UA, UB and UUs. In addition, all starting positions will be exactly the same for every civ every time you play. All map types have been removed except "Pangaea".

We've been closely monitoring which Civs you'd like to see included in this expansion. We're pleased to announce SEVEN new Civs:

Shaka of the Zulus: UA: None, UB: None, UU: None
Pele of the Brazilians: UA: None, UB: None, UU: None
Cristiano Ronaldo of the Portuguese: UA: None, UB: None, UU: None
Ho Chi Minh of the Vietnamese: UA: None, UB: None, UU: None
