Civilization 5 Rants Thread

In Steam, click on the View menu -> Settings -> Interface tab -> Uncheck the box that says, "Notify me <blah blah blah>".

No more popup ads when you exit the game.

As for paying someone to advertise to you. What do you think all the flashy intros are in most games? Ads.

I don't think anybody would really care about Steam and ads or the small stuff if they were enjoying the game. They'd be too busy playing the gaem to gripe here about the small irritations like that.

I don't like it when I have auto next troop on and I click on a garrisoned troop to defend the city against somebody attacking the city, it won't let me select him and snaps to the next troop in the que. I have to go into options, turn off auto next troop (or something like that), return to game. He'll, sometimes, it ends my turn if no troop has a move. WT_?

If a raging barb or enemy troop is within killing distance, the game should wake him up.

Also, when a battle is going on, on screen, don't snap to the scout or ship on the other side of the world. Let's handle all the troop movements on screen before we snap to the recon.

Exactly!

Sort the actions list from the user camera.
Stop showing everything on the other side of the map first.
And for Pete's sake, make the notification icons clickable.
... let me click the icon to talk to a leader about trade
... let me select the unit the icon references
... just moving the camera while another unit is currently selected is ANNOYING!

Dreamer....any cost saving would go to increasing the profit margin. Not saying thats good or bad, but the consumer is the last to see the benefit of increased productivity or cost savings.
Right.
The marketing department has unlimited options to ruin the civ franchise.
What's next? A commercial break during in between turns?

Where else will you get 600+ hours of entertainment for $90?
Actually 75% (rough estimation) of the "hours of entertainment" you've been looking at unit animations + waiting for the next turn.

The point of advertising is to inform you about something you would have bought had you known it existed. Advertising isn't evil. False advertising is,
Advertising CivWorld = false advertising
This facebook game has been in the open beta for months and is still in a very bad state.
After each update less people are playing it.
Not to mention, it's not a real civ game, but a market simulator where the player has 1 city
and is encouraged to join a civ/group and trying to work with others.
And at the end only 1 person wins, the one with the most fame points. Not a civ.

My rants are rants that may seem blasphemous to some and truth to all.
It's the NiGHTS mod. Why would I want to play a piss poor version of Civ 4? Screw that, if I wanted to play Civ 4, I'd fire that game up instead.
NiGHTS don't add anything new to Civ 5, it just copies (poorly) what Civ 4 has to offer.

Why do I have to break the bank when I'm upgrading? It seems like I was obligated to lower the upgrade cost for all units. It's either wait 20 turns for one Longsword, or spend 2,500,000 gold to upgrade him. It's not worth it.

In my game so far on a GEM TSL map, which has 20 civs. Earlier in the game, I have been Dowed twice, once by Siam, who was very friendly beforehand. Then by Korea, who was also friendly. The only aggressive thing I did was take Hanoi, at the same time Siam was attacking Kuala Lumpur. So, I was not nearly the only bad guy in the world. Especially, since goody twoshoes Germany and Egypt also took over a city state each. The point is that I had good relations with everyone. Then all of the sudden I get chain denounced by everyone, out of the blue, after 50 years of peace. With everyone going about their own business. I had not expanded in quite awhile at this point, so I am not sure why this happened. I am also using the WWGD mod which is supposed to help with chain denouncements, evidently that mod is not working well.

I am playing as China. Let them come! They want to denounce me then I'll show them a warmonger!!!

I have already destroyed Korea. Next my plan is to finish Siam, then either turn on the Japs or Mongols. The Mongols right now are invading my ally the City State of Almaty, but he is in the eyes of the world a good person, a friend to man. While I am a Hitler of all things. This game is so aggravating to play in these situations. Even the Iroquois halfway around the world thinks I am a badguy. It is just so stupid. I am sure he has more local trouble to deal with, yet his attention is all up in my business. The same goes for Germany and Egypt who are thousands of miles from my nearest city.

The whole diplomacy system stinks. It is horrible. I would hate to see how much worse it is without a diplomacy mod! A lot of people call this a wargame. I see why the only choice you have to get ahead is war. All I know is something needs to be done, this game should be fun not frustrating. I don't mind enemies, but I should not have to take on the whole world either. Especially since I am no worse than any other AI civ.

Moderator Action: Merged into the Rants thread; no discussion value for it to serve as its own thread.

I played a game with "Random Personalities" activated. I didn't notice any difference. That pretty much says it all about Civ5 diplomacy.

It figures! Thats because they are all the same. Firaxis should add some real individualism to the way AI leaderheads make choices. If Ghandi and Napoleon sat at dinner together. I am sure their views on military matters would vary like night and day. Also, Napoleon loved to wage war. He is not going to be all fired upset at the Chinese leader, halfway across the world who is waging her own war, for her own benefit. I feel Napoleon who say exactly this, "BRAVO MON CHER!" But not in CiV, Napoleon is madder than hell at someone exactly like himself. To me it makes no sense. Civs that far apart should affect diplomacy to make it so, it is harder for civs farther away to get upset. Local diplomacy should remain the same. When you share local borders, tension bulids much easier. The solution, or at least a big step forward in fixing diplomacy, would be distance modifiers. These would help reduce the chance of civs far away, ruining good relations, due to a far away civs local concerns. In other words, a civ that is across the world, who cannot directly influence another civs choices, should not be overly concerned if they are waging war or not. It does not make sense for the Iroquois all the way in North America, who are having beneficial trade relations with China, all the way in Asia, to break off relations, because China is at war locally in her own sphere of influence. The Iroquois would say, "There is nothing we can do about that, we have to worry about our own people, and our trade relations benefit us here, China is still our friend, why should we cut our own throats, because China is fighting?" Big Chief would toke up that peace pipe real nice and say, "China friend, we keep peace, we make much business, use money destroy white man!" :D

The thread about this problem is here, just in case you're searching for a solution.

i stepped away for a year, and I want to check to see if any major patches or alterations were made to make this game decent.

Any newz?

You're in the wrong thread for that question, as most of what you'll probably get here in the long-running rants thread is lots of thumbs-downs from people who hate it for one reason or another. As a non-hater who just reads this thread occasionally for entertainment value, I will give you my opinion- it has received a lot of patching and updating since you left, which has fixed or alleviated many of the bugs and glitches and balance issues and other unfinished stuff that annoyed everyone at launch.

Many will still trash it because they don't like various parts of it, and of course everyone is entitled to their opinions. I've never been a fan of the diplomacy system in it myself, even though I've learned to adjust to its foibles and have huge fun playing the game anyway.

If it was the bugs and glitches that bothered you the most, enough of them have been fixed to make the game quite enjoyable and relatively hassle-free, one year later. If you hated it because it wasn't a straight continuation of the Civ 4 game's way of doing things, then you probably still won't like it.

Cant win with England which is my nationality near enough. Play on King level. Tried all policy combos and tactics. I get swamped out due to expansion = lack of happiness, beaten to wonders which would remedy this. Or, invaded by civs with more land and resources, if I don't expand. Or achive a balance only for all other civs to gang up and stop trading with me/invade. Very frustrating and a BIG waste of time. Should I resign myself to Prince level? Am I missing something?

Any tips?

Much better than it used to be.

Especially with NiGHTS, which makes the AI a touch friendlier, along with totally changing the tech tree and having lots of new buildings.

AI is still awful in combat (in both Vanilla in NiGHTS), though in some cases it can defend cities quite nicely, and it can take your city if you let it build too large an army compared to yours.

The painfully pointless pacts of secrecy have been removed, now there's just Decs of Friendship, Denouncements, and WAR.

I say, go get NiGHTS and give it a chance.

Lots of changes/improvements. It's no longer in "paid Beta" status. If you haven't played through the 5 different iterations since launch then it will be a whole new game for you.

Still an underwhelming experience and an embarrassment to the Civ franchise.

That being said, it has improved somewhat in some areas.

If you have already paid for the product, you might as well give it another shot as it is nearly impossible to get a refund.

I will give it a chance again. Thanks for the feedback.

I have been on board since Civ 2, and was very underwhelmed by 5. Played it a few times and just couldnt get into it.

Ill check it out to see if the fixes and maybe a patch is good enough for me to get captivated.

The weather is turning, I need me some civ.

Good luck, if it goes badly (which it probably will), there's still plenty of mods for Civ4 on this website. ;)

My quick rant from weekend play. With two different games (on Kings), I have seen the AI have roaming great persons. For example, I was battling the Greeks at their capital city. They had a great merchant and engineer. The engineer was inside the city and the other was just roaming between their territory and mine. For a dozen or more turns, they just sat there. I did not have the city surrounded, only at the north end. Very poor AI management. Rant off...
