[LP] Civilization VI: Leader Pass - Discussion Thread

Is there any word on if the Leader Pass would go to console?
i believe in the stream they alluded to some difficulties with getting updates onto console. i got the impression that they regret the company they had porting to console for them and might not be able to do much more for console users going forward, if anything. but they were much less specific and committal in what they said on stream so maybe its a bit different. but still i wouldnt get my hopes up for any of this coming to console any time soon at least, sadly

Ah that sucks for me, I'm console only due to my weak computer. Thanks for the reply though.

Should Firaxis do better? Absolutely, and there are ways of making that known.

Should I be annoyed by people leaving bad reviews for poor reasons? Well, that depends on your philosophy, but it's certainly deserved. It makes my life harder trying to sort out the good stuff from the bad, and as such provides cover for bad behaviour and ironically ends up promoting the very things they're angry about.

Can it be changed? Yes. Not by me by myself, but by instructing others, and them instructing others and so forth, not by defending the behaviour. Everyone should feel free to review the company negatively, this is part of dealing with them. It's not like as if they've done perfectly in the past. But the product? It's just muddying the waters, making things harder to discern, and that's actually allowing poor behaviour, because when products that actually deserve criticism come out...the reviews warning about it are worthless.

It's still entirely legitimate reviewing, because it shows the feeling of purchasing/using that company's products. Do you agree that they should feel that way? Apparently not. But is everyone you? Also, apparently not.

So the review is useful info for people who would feel similarly different to you.

Also, the other methods of expressing displeasure with a company have been shown to be utterly ineffective. Reviews hit a company on the bottom line, the only line they seem to care about. An email, however worded, will probably not even be read, and definitely won't change anything.

Yeah I agree with these... none are bad, just kinda boring.
Yeah, that’s the crux of it, they don’t necessarily seem unbalanced, but they mostly don’t sync with their base civ (excepting Saladin here) and just feel uninspired.

Gotta say...I'm looking at the three LUAs...and they seem just really boring.

Abe is ok...thematic and flavourful, and it's okay, mostly riding on the free unit, which doesn't have the synergy of Basil's, so it just seems meh. I guess it's based on the IZ so they didn't want to make it too powerful.

Nzinga's is perhaps thematic and flavourful (I'm really not knowledgeable of her history, so I'm just going with the colonisation of Africa thing here), but is a little boring. Increased yields on her own continent and reduced on other continents just doesn't mean much to me. I guess

Saladin is...blegh. it's not often I get to use flanking anyway thanks to AI abilities in combat, and it just doesn't do much for me at all.

Perhaps I'm overly harsh - it's possible that being used to getting Civs with leaders, getting only leaders is inevitably underwhelming in comparison. On the chance I'm not being too harsh, I'm a little concerned because I'd have expected them to start with some exciting ones - get a bang to build excitement for the other leaders. Not every leader can be exciting, and we were going to get boring ones as well (that are needed), but that they started out with them suggests that maybe that's the tone for the pack.
I cannot agree with this enough. I was sorta upset that I had to wait a while for the leaders, but my impression of them is soooooo underwhelming. Having alt leaders over a full civ is already quite underwhelming, but the uninspiring design definitely doesn't help. Seriously, at this point of the game and the best they can think of is to grant a leader some passive yields so the game can end a bit sooner? Did the entire design department just run out of ideas simultaneously or something?

Since NFP I was kind of a staunch defender of Firaxis' decisions, but holy hell, I really cannot get behind any of this.

I'm curious why Firaxis seemingly abandoned features that looked really interesting for Caesar and Mbande. I suppose, for Caesar, they were maybe worried giving him an extra policy slot would be too game-breaking, and they didn't want to have to support the game for longer just for re-balancing the new leaders. I would understand that, but at the same time, they already put in mechanisms that lets players deal with that sort of thing. If I liked how things were before the Leader Pass, I'd just disable all the new leaders from my games.

With Mbande, though, her ability is actually game-breaking? You essentially get Maracana (except +6 culture) on turn 1. There's no interesting strategy with this ability, it seems, either. The only decision you need to make is: Am I in between a few continents? If yes, restart. If no, play on. It just turns down the game difficulty. The ability they were originally going to give her seemed to require much more thought on the player's part, but definitely not as potent. I'm a little disappointed, but at the same time, her biggest strength is that she's not Mvemba, and I'm definitely looking forward to finally being able to have fun with Kongo.

A side effect of that release mess is that the fact we haven't received any patch notes yet or seen any signs of fixes beside one heureka description is less of a vocal topic. I understand it to some extend, as I feel with those who have waited for the new leaders and prepared everything for firing a nice Civ game with the directly at release...and I wish all of them to get the leaders ASAP! But for me the real elephant in the room is still missing. The elephant carrying the cart with the juicy patch notes.

Does anyone know if Sean Bean is doing the voices? I listened to the Julius Caesar voice-over, and some of the vowels were more southern than his native Sheffield accent, so I wondered if it was an impersonation.

Have the issues been fixed already? Yesterday was a bit if a PR disaster wasn't it? :mischief:

Maybe it's for the best the abilities are a bit, how do I say this politely, ... uninspired? I'm not too broken up that i wasn't able to play yesterday, but I'll check out Lincoln once he can be played without resorting to tricks and hacks . (and I'll dutifully ignore the other two :-) Nzinga's ability is rather imbalanced and Sultan Saladin is markedly worse than OG Sal, so...)

Pity that Julius is the leader I'm the most excited about, and he's not even included in the pass itself!

Stopped believing it will resolve on its own and decided to do the workaround mentioned earlier to "buy" Anthology priced at 0 (by adding something else cheap to the cart). At this point I have access to all 4 newly introduced leaders. I'm in a group where all content was always bought on release + NFP as a whole. So never bought anthology.

Yes, Sean Bean is back.
(At least for Julius Caesar. IDK about others as I'm still waiting on Steam to deliver my free Leader pass DLC)

TBH though he's doing a ton of adverts now (in UK radio/TV).
So it's a bit annoying to hear his voice. 😆

O2 (mobile), Yorkshire Tea, etc.

Design-wise I'd put the new leaders in this order:
  • 1. Julius (loads of early camp gold can go a long way, just don't spend it on Monuments lmfao)
  • 2. Abe (as someone pointed out, the Amenity bonus from IZs he gets in Non-anthology games is way more interesting, but as it stands Lincoln is basically Byzantium without the religious hassle and I'm cautiously optimistic about the fun-factor.)
  • 3. Nzinga (all the creativity went into her badass leader model. Also imbalanced. Nkisi is a very strong culture ability and Mvemba's weak LUA is what kept it in check. Nzinga doesn't have a malus if she goes tall. Perhaps I can finally have a satisfying game on Immortal by piggybacking off her freebie yields ).
  • 4. Saladin_S. (for the BASEGAME his ability would be okay-to-mediocre, but this is Xpac #5, and we can all do better. Mechanically it's a good ability, but yeah borink.)

Let's see if the order changes once I get to play them ^_^

Ah I love being a migrant and not having to listen to adverts any more.

Someone should tell Sean that he says 'none' like a soft southern shandy now. I nominate you?

Still waiting on Steam to recognise that I own everything in the Anthology bundle.

This is off-topic but I have to say it - the Yorkshire Tea adverts are great. With Patrick Stewart recently as well :D

Well, can we conclude that firaxis stepped in the s**t without bothering to check everything in advance and now we will not get the promised update on the 21st, as promised to an audience of thousands of people from one of the largest publishers?
No you can't conclude anything like that, you're talking nonsense - there was a problem and it was fixed very quickly. Frustrating but hardly the end of the world.

its still no fixed
It is but it may take some time to get to you.

its still unfixed. its a fact. it's been almost 24 hours
The issue was fixed, the updates are rolling out, it's been 16 hours - must be very frustrating if you are still waiting.
