[NFP] Civilization VI: Possible New Civilizations Thread

Fantasy elements are already in the base game, they're called religions, and their beliefs have actual effects too. This isn't really a step much further.
I think they mean fantasy in reference to things that haven't existed in history, rather than things you may or may not feel are based on reality but which, like it or not, have been incredibly important historically and culturally.

Last I checked, religion had enormous real effects on history...

Here is the infamous "leak" re. Expansion 3: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/all-quiet-on-the-civ-front.633171/page-32#post-15222899

Mentioned were Maya, Byzantium, Portugal, Assyria/Babylon, a Native American Civ, Ethiopia (plus presumably 2 more not named).

Byzantium, Babylon and Portugal are hugely likely.

My top picks for the other two would probably be Vietnam and (*crosses everything*) Italy but I can see that last slot going to another Asian or African Civ, or to Gran Colombia if they are adding another Native American Civ as well as a post-colonial one.

Yeah the leaked civs are most likely in. Hope alt leader is NOT for Egypt because i really want the racist Cleopatra haters to got **** themselves but if they do, i hope they keep it shut.

Most likely, we're getting 3 female leaders (same for the other xpacks). I'm guessing Theodora, Isabella of Portugal (I don't think she ever actually ruled portugal but she was in the first leader wall panel) and maybe Lady Six Sky

Okay, now I really must get some sleep, may your sleuthing be grand and your wild postulations be even wilder

I am somewhat disappointed with this. Another bunch of civs, leaders and builders. But very little in meningful new mechanics. Or modding options (which could create those new mechanics).

I'll be disappointed if that turns out to be the case, but it sort of hinges on what 'game mode' means. It sort of sounds like they might include new mechanics that can be added to the main game in mix and match. Or they might just be variations on existing mechanics, which would be less exciting.

I.e. if the game modes are entirely along the lines of "Apocalypse mode - disasters happen more frequently and seas rise more quickly' or something like that, I'll be sort of underwhelmed, especially at the price of a full expansion for it all. Though again, I'll have to see how it plays. Maybe it's will be a better option than loading in new mechanics.

Lack of modding options is definitely disappointing now matter how you cut it.

I'd definitely have prefered a 'normal' expansion with a bunch of extra game mechanics, given to us all at once rather than over the course of a year where we buy in to something without knowing if it's worth it. But I'll give Firaxis the benefit of the doubt.

It sounds like these new 'game modes' can be added into the base game experience too, which means that we still kinda are getting new mechanics, it's just that they're all optional and not thematically coherent or taken advantage of by new civs.

I remain hopeful, but I'd have vastly preferred another expansion.

I also can accept new natural disasters, even those like meteorites (we are just lucky in our history that not one hit us) ... but having that unit which can cause natural disaster sound more like dungeons and dragons game than civ. Lets hope modders would be able to remove it.

I think they mean fantasy in reference to things that haven't existed in history, rather than things you may or may not feel are based on reality but which, like it or not, have been incredibly important historically and culturally.

El Dorado was important to history whether or not it existed. Much of the drive to colonize the New World was based on its myths of gold and fortune. The other new "natural" wonders were believed in as well, sailors were scared of the Bermuda Triangle for decades.

Anton Strenger:
"Additionally, we’re interested in learning how to create and deliver content on a more frequent basis to players – releasing scheduled content provides us that opportunity!"
:D:D
A few weeks ago I posted here they will test a new way of content release (DLC Packs). Bingo!

And this:
"At this time we don’t have any plans to build a third expansion"

I will say I like how Ed is in front of his giant wall of board games.

now we just need to know which ones they were

From the Anton interview:

"We felt strongly that having delivered two expansions since launch – Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm – the current state of Civilization VI’s gameplay systems, depth, and balance are in a great position, and that an additional expansion could add complexity to the core experience that we feel would tip the balance and overcomplicate the game."

That's too bad. I feel that after so much time the systems of the game have been pretty much "figured out". I would have been really nice to have something new to sink our teeth into, but looks like according to them, people mostly want new civs.

Most of the time I show the game to someone new and try to convince they to play, the reaction I get is that the game overwhelm them with so much mechanics. I know that feeling from when I first tried Endless Legend. Civ 6 mechanics are sufficient to me, although I wouldn't complain if they decide to introduce an Economic Victory and something like corporation mechanics!

From PC Gamer:

The New Frontier Pass will go for $40, and the DLC packs will also available for purchase individually if you'd rather pick and choose. It's a bit cheaper to buy the pass than it is to pick up each pack individually, though—DLCs with two leaders will go for $9 each while those with one leader will be $5, so $42 in total—and springing for the pass will also get you Teddy Roosevelt and Catherine De Medici Persona Packs, providing a new leader model and background, new gameplay bonuses, and updated agendas for the American and French leaders. The persona packs will released in July, along with the Ethiopia DLC

I'll be disappointed if that turns out to be the case, but it sort of hinges on what 'game mode' means. It sort of sounds like they might include new mechanics that can be added to the main game in mix and match. Or they might just be variations on existing mechanics, which would be less exciting.

I've seen a lot that it seems to be an optional layer to add on to the current game, that it is not like a scenario/Red Death, but more like a bonus layer (imagine being able to easily toggle Religion on and off)

It seems it will rely heavily on "capabilities" in modding and could actually open door to custom ones eventually.

They really should clarify this ... what new game modes means, is it something to toogle on/off ... or just chose normal game, game mode 1, game mode 2 etc ... I mean, all new mechanics are in those mods from what I can see.

From the wording in the interview it definitely seems like Apocalypse is a toggle that works with an otherwise normal game, which is great! But the question is if we can COMBINE modes, as there are several more lined up for the season pass. We don't know yet if Apocalypse is something we have to choose from a drop-down list next to other modes, or a checkbox we can click on alongside other modes.

From the interview: "They add a ton of replayability as they can be mixed and matched and overlapped"

The Apocalypse mode sounds incredibly fun but I'm really intrigued about the Secret Societies mode that's coming out with Ethiopia. Espionage-related, maybe?

other guesses for future game modes... surely there'll be one for plagues/diseases, maybe one that makes religions and religious victory more interesting, an economic-themed one... maybe something completely bonkers like an alien invasion one? That might be a bridge too far for me but at this point if we're getting the Bermuda Triangle and acolytes who can bring about the apocalypse who even knows

No one else excited there's two DLC with game modes which require Rise and Fall?

This likely means an extension upon Rise and Fall systems. I really hope they update the loyalty system as part of the free updates.

I suspect the leader from Pack 5 will have a unique governor, hence why it requires R&F. You wouldn't specifically need R&F for that. So it must be a leader for one of the R&F civs.

I strongly suspect Portugal is coming in pack 4. It's the only DLC other than the first that mentions new City States.
