[NFP] Civilization VI: Possible New Civilizations Thread

I love the snobbish accent of Vicky, maybe there should be a new alt-Persona for New Frontier Pass preorders? Working Class Cockney Victoria

It's actually that she doesn't sound snobbish enough! Her voice is just a normal, fairly pleasant voice like a BBC news presenter. She needs to be a bit more Hyacinth Bucket!

Okay, I cant figure out the accents that well. :) P.s. do you say "oi!" often?

I think that DLL modding is extremely important for the long term health of the game.

I would go so far to say that the Civ V community patch and the Endless Legend community patch are the best two 4x experiences you can currently get. Primarily because of the AI. In both of these mods the AI is massively improved.

I see lots of attacks on Firaxis and Amplitude saying they are terrible at AI, but I think that comes from a deep misunderstanding. Making good AI takes time, alot of time. I would go so far to say it's the most time consuming part of programming a 4x game. However a AI programmer only has the same amount of time to work on the game as everyone else.

In an ideal situation the AI programmer would stay with the game and continue to update its AI for years after the rest of the company has moved on. Once a game is 'feature complete' work on a good AI can really get going since you can work on improving how the AI interacts with the game systems present rather than spending time teaching it new systems.

But this is simply unrealistic. That programmer needs a salary. And the new project the companies working on needs AI.

However modders can take the reigns and be those AI programmers. Continuing to tweak and update the AI for years after the games final form, work that simply needs to be done for good AI.

In terms of Civ VI I am feeling more hopeful than with other 4x games that don't allow AI modding. It's true that modders cant get their hands on the AI code. But with NF we are looking at years more work being put into the AI and the new systems seem simpler and lighter, meaning more time can be spent improving how the AI interacts with the existing systems in the game.

I've seen some suggestions that they wont release the DLL due to possible embarrassment about their code. This will be sad since the people who will get most use out of the DLL themselves will be programmers, who are most likely very sympathetic to deadlines and code that is designed first and foremost to work rather than being elegant. When there is a deadline you need to get the code out of the door, you dont have time to make it perfect.

I wouldn't read too much into the quote from Anton.

I think Civ VI was always intended to have a Third Expansion. But somewhere along the line the thinking changed. Maybe they thought a Pass model would be more profitable. Maybe they thought dropping more mechanics into the base game would overcomplicate the game for some or most players.

But it seems like the new Game Modes are intended to create expanded and new mechanics, much like an Expansion would, but instead make that content "optional" by allowing players to toggle the modes on and off. So, it seems to me we may get the same content as an Expansion, but it's delivered by a different model.

It's really hard to tell based on what little we know. It's quite possible that all these additional modes will be kinda small tweaks to the game, that introduce a lot of "take it or leave it" content and or generally silliness. But I think it's possible we get some really decent new mechanics, that some players may find they just leave toggled on and treat as part of the base game.

Fingers crossed.

There are a whole range of English accents other than RP (received pronunciation, the 'TV newsreader' accent) and cockney ;) I think the problem I have with Victoria is she uses what's called a modern RP - so she sounds too modern to me. If you listen to really old BBC radio recordings that's more the sort of accent I feel she should have. Also she needs to sound more shrill and high-pitched!

FWIW my accent is actually quite close to Victoria's in-game. Maybe that's why I don't like it

ETA: I do get that it's harder to distinguish between regional accents if you're not from that part of the world. For instance I can't always tell if someone is Canadian or American which I probably shouldn't admit to on here :mischief:

Yep, can't wait for the update! Really excited to see the new changes.

Also, Saturday is now remarkably the worst day of the week for me. I can't do anything out of the ordinary with it because of quarantine, and there's a 100% chance there will be no news regarding Civ for two full days. No other day of the week feels so miserable and hopeless :p

Maybe try playing one of the scenario's instead? They won't change due to an incoming update right?

Any idea the first DLC will be accompanied by a general update? Or will the switch monthly between (community) updates & DLC…

i mean it is not like Firaxis is going to do something completely out of the box and do something tonight

Pretty sure I read somewhere there's an update on the 21st. Ed Beach's twitter I think.

less than a week y'all!

It's crazy how little we actually know considering how close it is to release. By comparison Warhammer Total War 2 also has a new patch and DLC dropping on the 21st and at this point we have effectively seen everything in it.

For Civ we haven't really seen anything about Gran Colombia, how exactly apocalypse is going to work and how in-depth the changes are, or know anything about what's coming in the patch apart from some bug fixes

One Update I would really like to see, is less Mountains, or more gaps between mountains.

Even when I choose old world the map is taken over by huge mass of mountains. also having mountains right next to the coast is very annoying. what would improve the game is having some mountains which were passible, routes discovered via explorers/ scouts would be good. having one hexagon route between me and another civ takes the shine of the game I feel. I end up spending hours resetting the map, hoping for one that does not resemble the Alps. I like the concept of mountains but in moderation.

Also, big improvements needed on map builder, with starting locations. seems one error causes it to crash.

finally another update idea would be being able to close borders for trade with another civ, or being able to militarize your side of the border with minefields etc military engineer to create minefields or bombers are able to drop mines (Including at sea). and different levels of denouncements.

I'm pretty happy with the approach they'll take in the upcoming year. Clearly they've heard us. Going from 4-8 months of silence to updates every month is a big deal.

Very happy about the announcement as well. Especially about the 6 free patches. Very interested in future AI improvements and overall balancing stuff. But this is not a good excuse for the silent treatment over the past 8 months. I love the civilization and xcom series. But absolutely loathe the way firaxis handles its PR in between updates. Even a very small company like overhype studios (battle brothers) knows how to communicate with its fanbase.

Is there any good reason why they don't communicate?
No. They are stuck in the past where any communication must be so carefully planned that it is a risk. Funny thing is, with the rarity of the feed, any time they do open their mouth they better be sure of what they are saying, while fanbase tend to forgive delays and are overall more understanding toward a publisher that keeps an open channel to them.
