My thoughts exactly. I think the plan must be to swarm out of there like a hive of bees if the MAGA couponauts show up again. I heard on the news that they were handing out weapons to all of the National Guard today. If by "weapons" they mean rifles with live ammo... its going to a miracle if we don't end up with a bloodbath :shake:

Maybe the simple show of force will be enough to keep them at bay :please:

Just for the record, persona ingrata isn't the same as persona non grata.

I've been seeing articles and hearing news folks claiming that McConnell actually has the votes to remove Trump if he decides to go that route. I'm highly skeptical of this, but I will admit that if the Republicans turn on Trump, even at this late hour, they are going to have a pretty strong talking point that they took the high road, demonstrated that they could put aside partisanship, put country over party... on-and-on etc. They are also going to use it as an absolute defense against the claim that they are the party of Trump going forward.

Of course, I'm not convinced that any of this would be fair or accurate, but I am damn sure that they are going to claim it, and a lot of people are going to buy it. There's no denying that ousting their own party's POTUS when they have the majority would be an unprecedented display of bipartisanship. So maybe they (McConnell) wants to grab that brass ring while its there?

Instead of the national guard, after all the officials have gone in can't you just park James Harden in front of the door? After eating so much it will be impossible to move him.

Wasn't that a given with the House having an outright majority of Democrats in any case?

    Yes

EDIT: Ten Republicans went along with the Democrats to Impeach so the final count ended up 232 to 197 in favour of Impeachment, giving Trump the dubious distinction of being the only POTUS in history to be Impeached twice.

The first, but not the last. I suppose there should be no cry when the gop impeaches/starts procedures to impeach some future dem president two or three times - that's why precedents are important.
The issue of the impeachment being based on a speech is also very risky - politicians do tend to say stuff to their voters which can be very divisive.

There was already precedent for impeaching. And a political party has already tried to make all sorts of nonsense stick to a former President (Obama).

"don't do things for the right reasons because people might for bad reasons later on" always fails to recognise that people who do things for bad reasons will generally do them anyway.

"Twice-impeached, single-term former president Trump" has a unique ring to it. TISTFP is less catchy than POTUS, but hey, "loser" is even more catchy and we all know that he cannot bear to consider that in relation to himself.

It was a very strong impeachment. The strongest impeachment ever.

Indeed, I really want to take the "but it'll divide the country even more!!!" line and jam it down some birther throats.

An armed mob storming the Capitol in an attempted coup is also "very risky", so I guess we'll just have to roll them dice... pearl-clutching notwithstanding
It would be very nice if the Senate actually does bar him from ever holding office again.
Its hard to keep track with all this winning he's been doing, but by my count, Trump is now the first and only POTUS to:
    1. Fail to win the popular vote twice, and lose his bid for re-election, and get impeached
    2. Get Impeached twice

And he may yet end up being the only POTUS in history to actually get convicted/removed/barred from holding office by the Senate.

    So much winning...

So, Rome had the year of Four Emperors, America will have the month of three Presidents?

Correction... The Donald J. Trump Presidential Library, Legal Research Center and Hotel Casino.

As an aside... I wonder how many of the former POTUS perks he still gets if he is convicted/removed by the Senate. Its never come up before because we've never had a POTUS actually convicted in the Senate before. Nixon resigned and was pardoned, so I think he got to keep all his swag.
