CNN poll: 52% say Obama doesn't deserve reelection in 2012
By Michael O'Brien - 02/16/10 01:35 PM ET

52 percent of Americans said President Barack Obama doesn't deserve reelection in 2012, according to a new poll.

44 percent of all Americans said they would vote to reelect the president in two and a half years, less than the slight majority who said they would prefer to elect someone else.

Obama faces a 44-52 deficit among both all Americans and registered voters, according to a CNN/Opinion Research poll released Tuesday. Four percent had no opinion.

The reelection numbers are slightly more sour than Obama's approval ratings, which are basically tied. 49 percent of people told CNN that they approve of the way Obama is handling his job, while 50 percent disapprove.

Still, the 2012 election is still a long way's away, with this fall's midterm elections looming large. Republicans are hoping to make inroads into Congress, while Democrats are hoping to hold onto gains won in the 2006 and 2008 cycles.

Respondents to CNN were split at 46 percent as to whether they preferred a generic Republican or Democratic candidate in this fall's elections.

At least one retiring lawmaker is confident Obama will sail to reelection, with Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) predicting Monday the president would win "overwhelmingly" in 2012.

The CNN poll, conducted Feb. 12-15, has a three percent margin of error.

Ouch. If things continue South for Obama do you think the democrats would really ditch an incumbent President to have someone else run against a resurgent GOP?

Could this hurt Obama politically? ;)

In other, related, news, nearly 80% of Americans know that we won't be voting again for President until 2012.

Correct. I think that was clearly stated in the poll. Yes.

In one year, we went from the Dems having 60 seats and credibly dreaming of 64 to maybe losing the Senate altogether. Speculating on Obama's reelection chances when we don't even have a good idea of the GOP candidate pool (or hell, even the issues!) is just stupid.

Terribly worded poll that doesn't produce "against him being reeelcted" data. "deserve" and "against" are different concepts which would produce different responses.

Additionally, reading the PDF, it came after questions about whether generic Congressmen deserve to be reelected, which seems to me like a conditioning question to elicit a negative response to the followup.

What was the wording of the poll? Because if I was an American voter, I would certainly 'prefer to elect someone else', but I would sure as hell end up voting for Obama in 2012.

It was "Do you think Barack Obama deserves to be reelected, or not?"

And that question came immediately after "Please tell me whether you think each of the following political officeholders deserves to be reelected or not" which I'd argue has a conditioning effect.

The only poll that's going to matter is the poll in November 2012.

Exactly (and welcome back). I can see why this would thrill you MB, but even you have to admit it's meaningless this early on.

Well, since some are keen on polls :)

Coming from 45% in August, the approval rating of Obama is going up steadily to 51%

Zogby Interactive: Obama Approval Consistent at 51% In Presidents Day Poll

Plurality Say Too Early To Assess Obama's Overall Standing Among Presidents

UTICA, NY - As we celebrate Presidents Day, a new Zogby Interactive poll of likely voters shows Obama's overall approval rating holding steady at 51%. He continues to enjoy higher approval ratings among Democrats (86%), First GlobalsTM (54%), and Liberals (91%). Meanwhile, 90% of Republicans and 95% of Conservatives disapprove of the job he is doing, numbers almost unchanged from our February 2nd poll .

The tables below show Obama's job approval overall and among key subgroups since August 21.

Things are going North!

But they were going South!

:crazyeye:

Dont worry Obama is saving the IRAN WAR CARD for later. You betcha

Poll is stupid. It's like asking "would you prefer a better president than Obama?", seeing the majority yes votes and concluding that Obama is "going south".

Spin spin spin...

This is about as meaningful as the poll that says that Sarah Palin would win the Republican nomination today - for all the same reasons.

And I know how much you want that to be true, MB. ;)

The Communist News Network?? Sorry, but I refuse to believe this until it is reported by a more reputable organization like Fox. Nice try, Mobby, but I see through your leftist agenda!

P.S. - I think it's obvious who I really want to see run again and spank Obama. Wow, spank, I guess that COULD hurt, and more than politically!

a resurgent GOP?
From October 2009. I'd like to see more recent numbers if anyone has got them:

http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2009/10/republican_party_approval_rati.html

According to a CNN Opinion Research Poll, public approval of the Republican Party this month is at 36 percent, the lowest it's been since the summer of 2007, right at the tail end of George Bush's second term in office. That's a 5 percent drop from the last poll, over the summer. 54 percent of the people surveyed said they disapproved of the GOP.

Don't know if anything has changed the last 4 month with regard to GOP approval ratings? ;)
