Brazil overtakes UK as sixth-largest economy.

(UK relegated to seventh place in world league of leading
economies in 2011, according to team of economists.)

Brazil has a larger land area, larger population and good agricultural,
mineral and real manufacturing sectors; so this turnabout is not expected.

And Brazil does not suffer from paying losses on an over-sized financial sector.

I eagerly await a reasonable and measured response from luiz. And from the BNP.

So, a 200 million country finally overtook a 60 million one in terms of overall economic output?

Shocking.

In other news, Bangladesh (142 million people) is expected to overtake the Czech Republic (10 million people) this year...

How's the average Brazilian doing?

Still a second-world country.

Though it's nice to know that the aggregated capitalist elite of Brazil has more total wealth than the aggregated capitalist elite of UK, I guess.

It's still an achievement in that Brazil is doing better than other countries of similar size, e.g. Indonesia, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Bangladesh. For GDP per capita at PPP, Brazil leads this pack by far. In fact it does better than China and India, without being an oil exporter like Russia.

It takes many decades for a poor country to become rich. Getting to 1/3 as rich as one of the richest country is just one step, but it's a solid one.

May the power of Earth remain in the hands of the New World.

I agree, it will be amusing to watch Anglo-Americans beg for menial jobs in Mexico ;)

As long as those jobs in Mexico have a currency to pay us...

Determination of x-world country is based on the prevailing standard of living and quality of life.

Even by that logic, a second-world country has always been used to label USSR, China, their Allies.

This is why first, second and third world definitions have always been a terrible label and should be avoided at all cost.

Actaully, the term arose in the Cold War in reference to the non-aligned countries (a derivation of the Maoist theory of Three Worlds), and became associated with impoverished backwater countries in general. It's only after the collapse of the "second world" of the Eastern bloc the that "first" also became associated with any particular level of prosperity, so the supposition of an intermediate "second" world is very much a novelty.

I've never heard China considered as second world.

I agree it is a terrible label. Labeling Latin America and Russia with Africa and most of Asia is beyond stupid.

Did not know that - I stand corrected.

I always thought first-world = democratic high standard of living (U.S.). Third-world = horrible impoverished countries (Africa). Second-world everything in between (China).
