What are your thoughts on corporal punishment? Where should it be allowed? Where should it be banned? What should it be limited to?

I think it should be limited to the household. Apart from a police officer or similar government official, nobody has a right to lay a hand on a person's kids apart from their parents.

I primarily support spanking. Slapping should be used sparingly and only used should the child say something incredibly disrespectful(say, the kid tells the parent to eff off). Beating is a barbaric activity and all those who perform it should be arrested accordingly.

Legally, as punishment for crime, I'm not really sure.

Corporal Punishment is still legal in a good part of the schools in my country, although it is regularly practiced in only a few.

My students are culturally conditioned to it. They seldom respond to other punishment/reward systems, like removal of privileges, humiliation, yelling, or the elevation of "good" students. They have told me that they expect me to hit them.

I'm trying to break that cycle. I'd be okay with *rarely* spanking my own child, but I don't want to open the pandoras box of smacking somebody else's kid, no matter how much they are being a pain in the ass.

I don't support it in schools. I think it perpetuates a culture of violence, and undermines our teaching that violence is not a way to solve problems.

Indeed. Government employees cracking open cans of whoopass should be left to soldiers and police... Both of whom frequently need to use force to get their job done. A teacher merely needs to... well, teach. There's better ways to discipline the unruly students than to hit them... the only people who should really be able to lay a hand on a child is a parent, and even that should be restricted.

Indeed... kind of odd schools will be so quick to condemn violence but then allow their teachers to engage in it without penalty. It's like telling a child they shouldn't smoke and then lighting one up right in front of them. Sets a bad example and the logic just doesn't follow.

I think that we have gone soft on the kids. Now a slap seems severe which is I'm afraid a bit ridiculous. I leave it up to the parents to figure out what kind of punishment works best for the child. Not every kid needs corporal punishment. Anything that leaves a mark after a couple of hours is probably a bit abusive (i.e. no punching or kicking), but I'm not opposed to a little belting once in a while. And can someone please explain to me how standing and facing the wall is some sort of punishment? When I was a kid, you could only dream of getting a punishment like that.

I don't think spanking should be illegal, but I think parents (or anybody else) should not use it at all. It does more harm than good. There are other, non-violent methods to teach your kid right from wrong.

I think just once or twice in life the line needs to be crossed so that the child understands there is a very real threat. A slap on the bum, enough to shock at a young age is enough. You don't need to beat them black and blue.

When I was a child, I certainly deserved it numerous times. And I felt no hostility whatsoever when it was warranted, which it almost always was in my particular case. My parents were quite careful to almost never punish me when they felt anger towards me. They sent me to my room until they could regain their composure.

Slapping is a different story. I was never slapped and I'm very glad I wasn't. That sounds more like an adult losing their temper instead of an acceptable form of remedial punishment. It reminds me of the stories of "penguins" hitting the hands of recalcitrant Catholic students with their rulers.

I remember when parents took the time to get invovled in their child's life. School was just an extension of the home, and parents and teachers had an understood agreement that what worked at home also worked at school. Now schools have replaced parents and lawsuits have taken the place of corporal punishment.

There are a few cases when some form of swatting is appropriate, such as if a toddler keeps sticking their fingers into the light socket. A slap on the wrist to get their attention will probably be more efficient then telling them to stop, and parents need to establish some form of authority at a young age.
