Current (SVN) development discussion thread

I haven't been able to play as the Aztecs for the past dozen or so updates. The turn counter gets to turn 1 and then just stops. It doesn't crash or freeze, but just STOPS, and stays on turn 1. Is anyone else having this issue?

not sure if intended, but tibet cant declare war on independents and the horse archers can enter enemy territory without declaring war.
Also, the dutch start with amsterdam at size 3. it used to be like size 9

Pretty sure it's working as intended. To declare war on independents you can just order one of your non-khampa units into their territory.

Khampas have the ability to cross enemy territory without open borders. This includes independents, so you don't get the usual declare war dialogue. As great.taurus said, simply use another (far away) unit to declare war.

Is it possible to have both 1.9 and SVN on my computer at the same time? I ask this because both folders will be named "RFC Dawn of Civilization" and I think that it's impossible to have 2 folders with the same name.

That's right. But you can keep both folders and rename one of them to something else, like "RFC Dawn of Civilization SVN/1.9". You can of course only run the mod which is in the folder with the original name, but it's easy to rename them if you want to switch.

Should there not be an option to build a regular plantation over a slave plantation as there currently is?
I don't know how effectively the AI uses slaves yet, but it seems like this would be something that the AI would be inclined to do if possible, even though it does not make sense.

Has anyone been able to succeed with the English ships UHV? 25 frigates is one thing, but sinking 50 is difficult, there just aren't many around to sink, even if you start declaring war on other countries. You just end up having to spam privateers and send them around the world searching for some boats to sink/attack you. Yet in the couple of games I've played I haven't even got close to 50.

I'm a truly awful player, but I can meet the sinking goal. My settings are probably easier than yours (1.0, Epic, Viceroy) though. Part of my approach was to avoid blockading too much, so that the cities were able to construct ships that I could destroy. Spain and Portugal were the most constructive enemies.

I also have a lot of trouble with stability. I can make the every continent UHV, by waiting until the last minute to settle the final cities, but within years my stability will shoot down and India will constantly revolt/respawn which makes the empire unmanageable. You just have to give away a bunch of cities in mid-1700s, which isn't that realistic. Would a better 'power of indirect rule' UP involve a stability bonus rather than maintenance?

I agree this is tough, but one tip is to do things the historical way: the British Raj relied on good relationships with the Princely States. Destroy the Moghuls (who don't seem to respawn), but get India to capitulate to you when one city remains from the first rebellion. That means you get the power and (holy city) wealth of North India permanently, in exchange for losing a few jungles, and resources you should be able to pick up elsewhere.

Just build a lot of caravels and privateers. Privateers sink all unlucky ships, and you upgrade caravel to frigate in last minute.

You can also build a whole bunch of Fishing Boats/Galleys, gift them to your target civ,
and on the same turn, DoW them and destroy the stack you just gifted them.

Won't that work without DOWing too (Privateers)? Especially fishing boats seems useful...

Work Boats work wonders here.

Which is why, Leoreth, these "Sink Ships" UHVs need to be changed. How ridiculous they are is only overlooked because of how awesome England is otherwise. I suggest:

(1) Have a navy of at least 25 Frigates/Ships of the Line and at least 200 total XP

or

(2) Have a navy of at least 25 Frigates/Ships of the Line and more powerful than the rest of the world combined

Which is why ...

I'm currently considering subtracting gifted ships from your counter or disabling unit gifting altogether.

Good job guys, the gig is up. :sad:

Random Event:
A spy has infiltrated the British Palace and reduced the want for sunken fishing boats.
a) Disband parliament ( All :gp: is replaced with :hammer2: )
b) Execute the spy (10,000 :banana: forever)
c) Let things proceed the way they are... we will find our way into the spotlight. (The infiltration may continue. Destroying your own defenseless Fishing boats no longer contributes to a golden age)

Honestly, just the 25 Frigates/Ship of the Lines will do as a goal.

There are other ways to abuse the Sink Ships goal:

If you leave a small stack (3-5) Privateers on the enemy coast,
that civ will change it's priorities so that all coastal cities begin building naval units (Triremes & Caravels, occasionally sending them out to get picked off gradually)
This not only cripples their economy (them only building ships and you blocking their trade), but it severely slows them down in terms of all other progress.
This is a holdover from BtS. Although it's more useful here because you have a longer window to use Privateers.

See the 1.8 China AAR in my signature for details.

I think a 200 Naval XP goal would be easier to implement.

I also think we shouldn't disable unit gifting. I routinely gift stacks to my vassals and then give them "Why don't you attack... " orders. I find it rather effective. And realistic, especially while playing as America. :cool:

Also, there is the gifting of nukes. :nuke::lol::nuke::lol: Which is one of the best features of Civ IV and should not be ever disabled, IMO. Basically, my favorite way to win a Diplo victory is:

(1) Get to Friendly + Defensive Pact with the strongest civ who is not your vassal (usually for me this is England, so from here on I will refer to it as England);

(2) Instigate World War (multiple times if need be, just get England to be Furious at your enemies);

(3) Gift 20 Nukes to England;

(4) England nukes your enemies for you, getting all the diplomatic :mad: of "You nuked us/our friend!";

(5) Propose Diplo victory in UN, run against England;

(6) Nobody votes for England because of all the nuking. Your enemies get little to no votes because England nuked them into oblivion. You win Diplo.

(7) Send a message of thanks to the English leader.

It seems to me that Egypt's Fatimid respawn lost some of its strength. I saw them a couple of times being one of the top 5 in score in an earlier version, and now they spawn with Classical Era techs and no way of catching up, so they just capitulate to Turkey or Arabia. Maybe they were just lucky a couple of times before, but something seems off. They need to be more powerful, in any case (only Classical Era techs? That won't do, sir, that won't do).
