Curt's Dog is on Drugs!

No kidding!

My dog just got back from the vets at 6PM today, after a major tumour removal.

He had an egg-sized lump on his hind left leg, but his tumour operation was a success!

At this I am glad, he is an old dog, and is 13 (human) years old, but his odd post-op behaviour is worrying.

This is my faithful mutt's first operation where he has went under gas and been out cold.

I am wondering if anyone else has any experience of how to deal with
a drugged-up dog, or what to expect after an operation like this?

Any advice is appreciated...

My black lab had a tumor around the eye and was surgically removed like 2 weeks ago. Basically, she was and still is on some medication and looks weird. Half her head was shaved (phantom of the opera!) and thats where the meds were put...of course she itched this a lot and I wasted 4 hours watching her and saying "no!" everytime she tried to scratch.

Basically, just be yourself around the dog.

I remember helping my parents carry one of their dogs into the house after a hip operation. She was so drugged up, she couldn't stand. We ended up lifting her (a 90 lb lab mix) onto an oriental rug and carrying her on it like a stretcher. The really funny thing was she was so relaxed, that her tongue hung like 2 cm out of her mouth the whole time, even when her mouth was closed.

You don't have to do anything. The dog will recover in time and return to normal. If he tries to walk before he is ready try to discourage him so he won't crash into things or down steps.

Same here Curt, glad to hear the pooch is ok. The dogs probably not only still high, but also traumatized and confused about what happened to him. He'll probably be his old frisky self again in a day or two.

Of course they do. Ours died of breast cancer. I suppose if you have six breasts your chances are that much worse. And our cat died of a tumour on its stomach. I wonder if there's a mobile phone mast near our house or something?

Btw, too bad this thread is sad. I was hoping it would be like a story my friend told me, about how his dog ate some pot and spent a full hour barking.

I had a dog years ago that used to drink beer with us and get loaded. We would put beer in a bowl for him and he'd lap it up like mothers milk.

It was irresponsible, I wouldnt do that to a dog today. This dog also used to try and 'bite' clouds of pot smoke In case anybody is wondering, I didnt end up killing the dog with beer. I couldnt house train it so I gave it to a friend who's a dog person. She had him trained within 3 days.
