D'Artagnan01: Low-level Training Day

So we got CoP's. And we're likely to get Newton's in 6 turns.

We probably could have (though there is no reason to) get Magellan's. If we lose Newton's to a cascade I guess we'll have this wonder instead.

Have the Scandinavians lost any ground? I hope not.

So who's next?

CB, you have reached 4 digit PC. :p Happy 1,000 post. :)

ON other news, good job on the turnset, unfortunately for me, my Disk Drive is wrecked and so, it wont read Civ disks, so no civ for me. This could take up to 3 weeks so until then, I will watch from the lurking stands. :badcomp:

Good turnset, CB. I'm a little bit concerned about our lack of Saltpeter, ditto any plan to miss MT; we are already weak compared to our main threat - Hiawotsit, and that's before he gets MT, which he surely will before we have RP. Also, it's not a given that we will have a source of rubber for Infantry. I would suggest that MT is a must, and soon.

Iroquois have saltpeter to trade, but cannot determine from where. Will trade it for Chemistry. No. Or 604 gold. No. Or 34 gpt. No.

At some point we will need saltpeter to make Musketeers, our UU.
Don't want to trade Chemistry until Newtons is finished. The Viking switched to Leonardo's in Oil Spring, so it should be finished in just a few turns. Then the race will be JS Bach's Cathedral. If Chemistry stays as secret knowledge for a while longer, so does Physics, which is the precursor to Theory of Gravity.
My fear is that someone switches to Newtons on a Wonder cascade and beats us to it. Keeping Chemistry to ourselves for while longer will make that less likely.
I really wanted the saltpeter too. But I did not want to jeopardize Newtons by trading Chemistry or giving gold to Hiawatha just now. But once we get Newtons we need to get saltpeter. Lots of people building JS Bach's Cathedral and Magellan's Voyage. I haven't checked the build status on these Wonders, since no one else knows Theory of Gravity. As long as ToG is a French secret, we can ignore the Wonder races on Bach's and Magellan's.

I think we can keep the Iroquois at bay for six more turns.

On Military Tradition, we can trade techs to get Metallurgy, and then learn MT, but the trading has to wait until we get Newton's built. (I am just paranoid about a Wonder cascade to Newtons. Unlikely I admit, but possible.) In six more turns someone may have learned banking also. Trading for banking and metallurgy puts us into the next age.

Again, how's Raggy doing?
The Vikings broke their MA with us vs. America and made peace in 730 AD, with several turns left on the deal. America wants techs for peace and so does Egypt.

I don't think Ragnar is a true friend to France.

We have no current deals with Ragnar (IIRC), so maybe we should allay with America and Egypt against the Vikings. He (Ragnar) has his UU so I am sure his Golden Age has come and gone. America has two saltpeter, Vikings only one. We might be able to get saltpeter in an MA deal or tech swap. If the peace between Abe and Ragnar was just peace + tech for peace + tech (no gold involved) we might be able to get a new war started overseas.

After Newtons
I see us somewhat treading water until we build Newton's University. We don't want to do any tech trades until that Wonder is ours and ours alone. That happens in just a few turns, about halfway into the next turnset.

I think we need to kick around what wheeling and dealing we want to do at that point.

...? Really. So with the lack of activity, can I assume people wish to quit (or are 'disabled' for some reason)?
Just busy, thats all.

I dont like the idea of side-tracking for Smith's. Sure, its good, but we can trade for Economics later, maybe even have a prebuild ready (since Palace takes long time to build), we go to the Industrial Age, and the AI research useless things like Democracy. :p

I posted my reason for absence.

Well it can't be my turn yet can it? I suppose it could.

Let's see, we've got CommandoBob who just played. Me, Tribute who played before CommandoBob. Ansar the King and Bede can't play. D'artagnan and Bucephalus haven't played recently.

So one of you two should go up next.

I played before Tribute; it's down to you D'art.

Turn 1: Raggy offers 13 GPT for Wines+Silks. I decline. Notice that I see that the Incans took Alesund, dividing the Vikings in two, North Vikings, the small territory, and South Vikings, the core. Good for them. They are in DESPERATE need of cities.

IBT: Miami (America) completes Bach's. Pliny writes The Most Advanced Civilizations in the World.

2. The Great Americans (soon to be allies)

7. The Hopeless Koreans
8. The Forgotten 7CC Inca

T4: Not Much.

IBT: Learn Banking and enter IA! [party] Search Steam in 9. Orleans: Knight-Spear. Palace ex. Trees.

Hey, now get yourself over to Bad1:Mesop!

We need you to take 10 D'!

D'artagnan, you could have just made peace. Now, Raggy's gonna die! You also didn't have to ally with the Americans or the Egyptians. They were fine enough with our declaration on the Vikings.

Maybe ally with them to declare war, but not after.

So we're gonna build Smith's? Somehow, I doubt this will end well.

I suppose it is now Bucephalus?

And in the last turn log:

Magellan's is not a priority for us in any case, and in fact neither is Smith's (Heresy, they shout from the sidelines).

Remember that we are running our research budget at maximum after entertainment for most of the game. In that case banks and stock exchanges will be drags on the economy rather than accelerants. The few turns when there is an exploitable gap between income and outlay will be not be worth the shields it costs to build those buildings. The marketplaces we have built are for the luxury multiplying benefit, not the commerce multiplying benefit.

I think the last player was very excited about playing turns. So excited that they may have acted rashly. I have been guilty of this also.

So I ask:

We traded techs for peace with America and Egypt. What did we gain? Why not try to buy peace and then sell techs? Was this not possible?

We cancelled an ROP with the Vikings (I think). Had that ROP already expired or did we just take a rep hit?

America just had a war with the Vikings. We possibly could have gotten them involved in our war by just giving them some spending money. And then swapped Banking for Military Tradition and other goodies.
Same with Egypt.

In fact, if we have just give the Viking some gold, they would have started the war all over again for us. They would have declared on Amercia and we could have made money selling techs to both sides.

Anyway, these are my thoughts on the matter. They may or may not be correct assestments of the situation. I have been wrong before.

Yah. That's right. Except for the part where you acted rashly (you wait for DAYS before playing your turnsets )
Oh, Yes, I resemble that remark. :D

But there have been times I have done things rashly in playing my turns when I should have stopped and asked for help/advice/clarification, etc. But I didn't. In Nero04 I bought two slaves very early in the game. At the moment it seemed a good idea. I now see it was just showing off to the teacher and the team. In SGOTM 10 I was too anxious to play my turns when I should have waited and gotten things explained to me. As a result of having a fuzzy understanding of what was going on I delayed the game for us. And lost our first army and a bunch of Cavalry.

Making mistakes in public is a lot more humbling than making them in private. Remember my first turnset in this game?
