D'Artagnan01: Low-level Training Day

Do that and I will personally rip your epaulets off and replace them with the entrails I previously removed from your guts with my quarterstaff - the one with the pike head.
"Oh, I just love a strong, forceful man." she cooed in a throaty whisper. :p

You're really working on earning your "Grumpy" title, Bede.

Bucephalus said:
Why not? Surely we need them both to continue railing?

If the rails we need are down we won't need them, but only if the rails are down.

No rubber! Oh dear. We should have colonized that island. Of course, colonizing for the sake of it isn't really that good of an idea, but oh well.

I don't think we'll actually be having any wars soon, so rubber isn't too necessary unless we want honorary tanks or maybe spaceship parts. We can just buy it when we need it.

Bucephalus said:
Ah, I misunderstood; when you made reference to 'Hoover's', I thought perhaps it had some property, hitherto unknown to me.

And if we missed the Dam we'd need coal for coal plants.

<ahem>
The idea of going to war right now with England was not entirely well received, but my head is still attached to my shoulders and my entrails are still in my interior.

04 1270 AD

All mines flatlands are railed.
Need to rail the mountain near Orleans, but it takes a lot of WT that could be improving other tiles.
Railing mountains will be the last railing done, as long as we have coal and iron.
Four more turns of coal from Hiawatha (counting this turn).
[IBT]
Paris vRifle -> vRifle, 2 turns.
Rheims vRifle -> vRifle, 3 turns.

05 1275 AD

Brest grows to 9 and is cranky, hire a cop.
Load 2 Cavs and 2 Rifles into galleon, head to Little France (Le-tell Fron-sss).

13 Worker pairs on the mainland; 16 grassland and one hill tiles to rail in the north.
After that, 2 mountains and 14 forests; 33 tiles total.
Want to start roading all these tiles before we lose our supply of coal.
Can rail 13 grassland tiles next turn. Following split the workers up, one per tile, while we still have coal.
[IBT]
Tours police station -> vKnight, 3 turns.

06 1280 AD

Drop science to 70%, +22 gpt.
Upgrade our 10 cannons to artillery for 1200 (of 5264).
Rail 13 grassland tiles.
[IBT]
We learn Corporation, begin to learn Refining, 8 turns.
Paris vRifle -> vRifle, 2 turns.

Good News!
1280AD_LyonsTrimmed.jpg

Lyons Shakespeare's Theater -> barracks, 1 turn.
Avignon police station -> artillery, 4 turns.
Toulouse marketplace -> university, 29 turns.

07 1285 AD

Load artillery 01 to 08 onto galleons and ship to Litle France.
Unload Cav and Rifles on Little France.
Spread out workers, one per forest and mountain; complete rails in the north, use excess workers on the mountains.
Up science to 90%, we learn Refining in 6 turns, -109 gpt (of 4086).
Hire 3 geeks in Mousqueton.
Hire 4 geeks in Chebourg.
Hire 3 geeks in Starsbourg.
Hire 3 geeks in Bordeaux.
Carne temple -> library, 18 turns; 212 to rush, wait on the rush.

We lose coal next turn.
This turn we can sell Hiawatha Scientific Method for WM 179 gpt and 270 (of 275) gold, opening offer.
He will pay the same for The Corporation.
For Replaceable Parts he will only give WM, 91 gpt and 270 gold. He must be researching this tech.

Will wait and trade Scientific Method around next turn, when we need coal also.
Will buy coal first, then get our money back by selling techs.

Cleo will give furs for Free Artistry and Magnetism.

Our Military is average compared to Iroquois. Good!

Idiot! We need saltpeter to make Cavs and we have none. America does.

America wants Scientific Method for saltpeter. Not enough.
America will give WM, saltpeter, 175 gpt and 40 of 40 gold.
Iroquois will give WM, 179 gpt and 275 of 275 gold for the same knowledge.

Make the deal with Abe.
Hiawatha won't pay as much, only 101 gpt and 275 of 275 gold.
Make the deal.

Cleo will trade furs for Magnetism. We lose spices (Inca) and ivory (England) in two turns. Ivory won't come back for a while, so we need a replacement.
Make the deal for an old tech from the last age.

Incas need a lot of techs. Will trade techs for spices.

Uping the science to 100% from 90% doesn' give us Refining any faster.

Tours vKnight -> vCav, 3 turns.

Rush the libraries in Brest (188 gold) and Carne (212 gold).
[IBT]
Lyons barracks -> vCavalry, 2 turns.
Rheims vRifle -> police station, 6 turns.
Brest library -> market, 25 turns.
Carne library -> university, 67 turns.

We are loved. Add the left hand wing.

08 1290 AD

We are still buying coal from Hiawatha at 60 gpt.
Have not railed the island of Ameins.
Amiens is not too corrupt, about 25%.
Amiens uni -> courthouse, 7 turns (after changing two fishermen to farmers).
Have a galleon between the mainland and Amiens Island. It's movement is done. Load 4 workers into it, will unload next turn.

Artillery arrives overseas.
[IBT]
Paris vRifle -> vRifle, 2 turns.

Koreans are building Universal Suffrage.

As expected, we lose our supply of spices and ivory.

09 1295 AD

Mountains are railed; load those eight workers into galleons for Amiens.

Sell Communism to the Incas for spices, WM, 41 gpt and 86 of 86 gold.
Incas have six cities; this tech won't help them much.

We ignore the English ivory. We long for English rubber.
[IBT]
Lyons vCav -> vCav, 2 turns.
Tours vCav -> vCav, 4 turns.

10 1300 AD

Brest is cranky (thank you, MapStat!), hire a Civil Engineer (first time ever). Market in 16, not 23.
[IBT]

And the save is >>HERE<<.

Well done Commando. WIll comment in more detail later, like Saturday. There is a lot to say regarding Engineers and Policemen.

Except for a little bit of trading it was a quiet set of turns. France is well on the way to being fully railed. All the forests will be done next turn.

Our military is average when compared to Iroquois and that is good enough.

I think Hiawatha is learing Replacement Parts, so we need to keep focused on our military. He has some units moving around just north of the border. I don't trust him.

French Military
  • 29 Workers
  • 01 Pike
  • 08 Longbow
  • 14 Rifleman
  • 12 Cavalry
  • 10 Artillery
  • 07 Frigate
  • 06 Galleon
  • 03 Musketeers
  • 06 Mace
Total Units: 96; Allowed Units: 61; Support cost: 70 gpt.
01 slave

Added to Little France:
08 Artillery
02 Cav
02 Rifle

Three tiles on Amiens need to be railed. One of them will need to be roaded and then railed. A grand total of 7 WTs for 10 workers.
Once this is railed, we can stop paying for coal from Hiawatha. The roads from Carne to Reading will be done (one rail, one road).
Moved a galleon out from Rennes towards Amiens to collect the extra workers from that island and move them to Little France. Here they could rail the second forest time between Carne and Reading in one turn, if so desired.
That would be turn 2 of the next turnset.

Hoover in 8; Refining in 3.

Did not spend a lot of money rushing. Did not disband any units either.

We have another galleon on Little France that is not being used but could be used to move troops across the waters.

For no good reason, except to see them better, I stacked some of our military outside cities.

A good, solid turnset, CB.

A few points before the next player takes it:

We can drop the science slider back one without penalty.

If we want it, Hiawatha will pay 235gpt for The Corporation.

I share CB's mistrust of Hiawatha, and our Northern cities can be hit in one turn by cavalry, exposing other undefended cities behind; since we are awash with cash, might we not rush a bit of culture in those cities to expand the borders, then plant forest along the border? Also, I think we should cancel the ROP with Hiawatha.

If we get Aluminum and Uranium, let us begin the chant!

NUKES! NUKES! NUKES! NUKES! NUKES! NUKES! NUKES! NUKES! NUKES! NUKES! NUKES! NUKES! :nuke: :nuke::nuke::nuke::nuke::nuke::nuke::nuke::nuke:

I dont believe nukes are needed. I have never used nukes too, so if we do , it'll be a learning experience for me. :)

Bottom line, IMHO, we dont need nukes. :nuke: :scan:

Yeah, we shouldn't need nukes. :(

Civ II nukes were better anyways.

Bede's Commentary

With the rails down it is time to start thinking about retrimming some plains and what we are going to do in the northlands. Hiring CE's in a couple of places to build acqueducts to grow those populations is a good choice, then take advantage of tax collectors up there. At 90% science three or four more scientists don't contribute much while extra cash is always good.

Look at the terrain in the core again - we are way long food. Paris should get every shield it can, Lyons every single food. And put a granary in Lyons so it grows into its coastal tiles faster.

And since we seem to be planning a war with England (the French Letter War) get some troops to the west and land on that island. Taking those towns will get her to the table faster. And we can water them now.....

Splitting the workers was the :smoke: move of this set, though. Get them back together and instead of railing the woods (no benefits) put them to work re-trimmming the core to balance the shields and bread.

The magic numbers for shields are 45, 30 and 20. That gives infantry in 2 and 3 turns and artillery/cavs in four.

It's the details - look at food/shields/gold and choose which you want to emphasize in a town, then work to get there using worker turns or specialists or buildings. There appears to be a little randomness at work here. Also keep in mind that you can't use more than the total number of shields for any project, so try to match shield output to project as closely as you can.

Do we need a micro-management seminar?

Now for the specialist seminar - Cops are probably the most powerful specialist in the game. Use them to reduce corruption and waste to get maximum output in towns that are long food, but short shields. You can use a single cop to pick up that last shield in a town that is just one short of a magic number but has extra food. They are a good tool for fine tuning production where needed.

And instead of cash rushing culture I would rush military. Power grows out of the barrel of a gun, not from the mouth of a preacher!
