Also of interest to people having trouble with the game finding the CD... 1.07f used safedisc 2.40.10 while 1.16f uses 2.51.21...could have something to do with it?

Ok, my computer skills are sub-par, what do I do after I download the patch (should I open it from it's current location or something else)? How do I install the patch once I have it downloaded?

Thanks guys

UMM JUST DOUBLE CLICK IT..

What you have downloaded is a program. All you need to do is double click on it, and it will install the patch. During the install process it will ask you where to put the files, and you should direct it to your Civilization3 directory (where all the different files are located such as Art, Saves, etc.).

OK... is anyone else getting a strange text thing happening on the in-game setup screens?

(XP home edition user)

I don't seem to be having any major problems with the patch, though the game did crash on me the first time I tried to load a game. I rebooted and it loaded fine. However, the city size numbers are a little messed up. They seem to have a black shadow one pixel to their left. They're readable but ugly - especially on light color backgrounds. Anyone else have this going on?

In response to royfurr's concerns above:

I've tested the new patch in 1600x1200 resolution (I normally use 1152x768) and it works perfectly! (Don't forget to add that KEEPRES=1 to the Civ Ini file though). The map screens work well, (even on my 19" monitor) and the city and advisors screens just appear centred on the screen (i.e. they are not full-screen). But all perfectly readable.

One important point - the 'fuzzy' population numbers on the cities are not actually a bug (more a feature). Certainly on Win XP the numbers now look perfectly clear. I guessed it was something to do with the CLEARTYPE effect that's new to Win XP. Prior to the patch, I had to turn that back off as it caused different problems in the text display in Civ3. Since I loaded the patch, I've turned CLEARTYPE back on and the fuzziness for the pop numbers has gone!

I have a couple of screenshots showing the 1600x1200 views with the wonderful clear text.

I'll add one here.

Upload complete!!! The download link is the same. I simply deleted the old patch and uploaded the new one.

Let's imagine I'm completely stupid... not hard to do but... does link that is attached to the quoted post take you to a patch that works for 2000/XP or not.

I agree. Those shadowed city names look very ugly. They should allow us to turn off that shadow effect in the preference screen, Most of us are not color blind and don't need that shadow.

Yes. The latest version of the 1.16f patch currently available on this site appears to be fully functional for Windows XP in all screen resolutions.

Can I say that any clearer? ;)

I've attached a zipped version of a screenshot to prove how clear the text is provided your turn CLEARTYPE on.

Note: its a 1600x1200 image so be sure to zoom it to 1:1 otherwise you'll think it looks very poor! (I assure you, the actual screen is even clear than the image shown here, due to the compression of a JPG).

Thunderfall - are you running XP? How you tried turning on CLEARTYPE (from Control Panel/Display/Appearance/Effects)? The fuzzy numbers are gone! :-)

Exile_Ian,

Thanks for the help and info. I had not set the KEEPRES=1 statement in civilization3.ini, and when I put it in, the game looked great in 1600X1200, and I noticed something funny. Although I'm runing in Windows at 1600X1200 (per video settings) , clearly I had NOT been doing so in civ3 before ... things changed in an interesting way ... In 1600X1200, I could see and access the task bar and miniturazied (running) programs, but in whatever mode I'd been in civ3 before (ie before I'd added the KEEPRES=1 to civilization3.ini) I couldn't see or access the task bar. In the mode where I could do so, the program still looked like a dos progam running full screen- there was no window or borders. But when I brought my mouse to the bottom of the screen, the task bar appeared (I have the option for hiding the task bar set in windows). Odd. Anyway thanks for the posting back after seeing my message.
Good Civ-ing!

i am still a little confused, how can you tell if you downloaded and installed the correct patch?

One of the earlier posts in this thread states file sizes for the two different patchs.
The 'corrected patch' file size is the one you want to use.
Right click on the patch and choose "properties'
There will be a file size listed there, make sure it is
7,663,795

Ignore the number listed beside "Size on disk" which is sometimes listed underneath the "Size"
:)

I wuz jus' wondrin, are there any other nifty things a person can add to the .ini file? That 'keepres' thingy is cool.

Oh, and my problems seem to be a thing of the past... after making the game 'boxfresh' and then installing the 2000/XP patch.

Someone also stated that using a modified civ3mod.bic file is not a good idea. I would be inclined to agree.

I am using Windows ME, and I have just downloaded the "old" patch.

Do i need to unistall this patch, unistall Civ3, reinstall Civ3 with the "new" patch (that I will have to download??)

Thanx,

I just uninstalled Civ3, reinstalled the game and the new patch. I am happy to report that the F keys no longer crash the game and the diplomacy advisor screen seems to work fine on my Win2K Pro. :)

???? F keys no longer crash the game ???? I have never had that problem and i always use the F-keays ( cant change my civ1 habbits :) )

Ive lost ALL my saved games, when trying to load them civ3 just page faults..
i have so many hours of effort in those games...

anyone else experiencing the same things?

civ3 so far has been both great and absolutely terrible... it took me 3 days to get it working properly on my computer, and sound still doesn't work properly, the game is great but buggy... these patch problems are really upsetting... and now loosing 3 weeks worth of a game makes me feel sick.....

im getting pretty fed up with the endless civ3 problems..... didn't pay for beta

'Cleartype' is a font optimized for LCD's. Laptops, and those of you pimp enough to have a desktop LCD should use Cleartype fonts.

Those of us with standard CRT monitors should use 'Standard' fonts.

Cleartype can appear fuzzy/grainy on a standard monitor.

P.S. The game looks fantastic now that it is at the correct resolution. No errors to report, but I am starting fresh. (New install of Civ3, the '2nd' patch, and no saved games.)
