johnny depp trial incoming, which sounds like a fit for this thread.

it's unbelievable that the uk punished the victim, except we know that it happened. we shall see in the us

i don't care about him much personally, but i do care how much evidence he had in his favor and how little it mattered. because that's a sign of a broken system

Interesting factoid: women who are strongly against abortion also get abortions. They believe they have the "right" reason to end a pregnancy while everyone else is just a deviant slut.

Drugs are bad, m'kay... Well, I dont think pot makes people more violent but I suspect booze was involved in that relationship

depp has a drug problem, but the violent one in that relationship was not him. he was physically assaulted and called out for avoiding it by his assaulter, and it seems some of that was recorded.

amber is likely falsely accusing, and has already been caught lying to court

The facts seem to be:
  • His car (PL's) was pulled over for lack of current registration
  • PL got out and stayed out even after being told to get back in the car
  • PL tried to run
  • The officer caught him and PL continued to resist; they wrestled
  • The officer tried to use a taser but it failed
  • PL grabbed the taser
  • They continued to wrestled/resist and when the officer was on top of PL, he shot him in the head

Someone told me that booze bottles could be reused.

seems pretty much correct (video is available), though i'm not sure if the taser "failed" vs being deployed inaccurately. shouldn't change the evaluation of the situation though.

the gun shot happened after cop lost control of taser, which was in lyoya's possession then

now consider some news articles on it

just some examples of intentional misreporting. if news claims he was "unarmed" without retraction/correction, they are fake news. it might be difficult for them to grasp, but when you are in possession of a taser you are not "unarmed".

this was not some innocent fellow rando-targeted by police. lyoya had assaulted people previously, and fled --> physically resisted --> stole a weapon in the context of this incident itself. if cop gets tased, he is in serious danger instead. when someone is put in position where it's "him or me", we should not be surprised when they don't self sacrifice.

people were throwing eggs and crap at the cops over this, even though they did their job reasonably in this case from what we can see. won't surprise me if this is used in "unarmed men shot by police" stats either, even though that's a lie.

I think it is worth noting with lyoya that he was an African immigrant and English was not his first language i believe. This may have contributed to him not following commands. In the police video it did seem like he was struggling to understand the problem.

It should be noted the cop had Iyoya face down on the ground with the cop on top controlling him. Then the cop pulled his firearm and shot Iyoya twice in the back of the head. All because his license tag had expired..

Fun fact: ten years ago I was driving through a downtown area around 2:30 in the morning when a cop pulled me over. Not only was my tag expired, but so was my license. He just told me to get these fixed and drove off.

Btw, I'm a white male. Now, tell me Iyoya wss treated fairly by the cops.

He didn't have a taser. He was unarmed.

"The police stopped an unarmed man." is a factually correct statement. You are disingenuous at best.

And male politicians who are against abortion rights force their mistresses to get abortions.

it is not the statement implied by title of linked articles, however. which is why i am not the one being disingenuous here.

once he took the weapon from the police officer, he was not "unarmed". obviously, he took the weapon prior to being "fatally shot", therefore he was not "unarmed" at the time of being shot. that is factual reality.

the linked article titles an unarmed black man was shot. no, a black man was stopped, resisted arrest, forcibly stole a weapon, and was shot after doing so. when one is in possession of a weapon, they are not "unarmed".

for legal purposes, even grabbing the weapon counts as "armed". but at the time this guy got clapped, the police officer no longer had control of the taser. it's an unfortunate situation, but the decision to shoot was fine. it is not hard to envision a scenario where lyoya uses stolen taser to render officer defenseless, since he used physical force to take it.

It should be noted the cop had Iyoya face down on the ground with the cop on top controlling him. Then the cop pulled his firearm and shot Iyoya twice in the back of the head. All because his license tag had expired..

you could at least acknowledge the details of the case. even other posters who don't agree with me at least addressed the fact that lyoya stole a weapon through physical force prior to being shot. claiming that this happened "because his tag expired" isn't merely disingenuous, it's lying.

He just told me to get these fixed and drove off.

i'm going to guess you did not ignore officer commands, leave your vehicle, run away, and fight back, and steal a weapon from the officer. non-trivial details. even if you're not willing to acknowledge lyoya's conduct, it seems you are quite capable of avoiding it yourself. i think you could guess what happens if you try it, too, which is why you don't.

I saw a snippet of the video, looked like the guy was more 'pawing' at the taser to push it away and not trying to grab it. And it looked like the cop was extremely careless with it, pointing it within arm's reach practically inviting the guy to grab it.

Didn't look to me like the guy was aggressive, just running and defending himself. The cop kept shoving the taser at him and eventually he grabbed it but ended up face down. I understand cops get real panicky when they lose control of the situation but this guy didn't deserve that.

The police had the car and another person in the car. Sometimes it is OK to let them run away.

I have had this same experience (earlier in the day though), but with just tags expired. I didn't even know 'til he told me. Same "told me to get [it] fixed and drove off" experience.

The whole interaction was like "hey, thanks for pointing it out" style friendly interaction. Honestly, back then (15-20 years ago I'd estimate), I didn't even recognize how lucky I was to be white at the time. I thought that was normal for everyone.
