Media is probably a bigger factor.

Stories of criminality and bad happenings have been front and center in every local newspaper for generations.

I suppose you could ask if those stories gutted social trust, or if social trust was already down, creating the market for such stories(papers compelled to print them or lose their subscriptions).

Realistically, both. For a host of reasons I don't think the generations following the silent generation put comparably extensive social networks together. It's a positive feed back loop with media, and when identity is added in(this is not exclusively racial, poor white kids who smell like their parents cigarettes can attest), kinda collapsing, honestly.

De jure. De facto, a statement of support for it would make it a fait accompli.

No, I can state quite confidently that Harris saying it should be legal would not make it a fait accompli. In fact, I think if she said she supported legalizing it, the entire GOP would be immediately pushed to be even more against legalization than they currently are, and within a week you'd have Democrats like Reps Jared Goldin and Marie Gluesenkamp-Perez saying that Harris saying it should be legal just shows how out of touch she is with the middle. Years later guys like you would be writing in threads like this about how Harris tanked her campaign by trying to appeal to far-left stoners at the expense of swing voters

I doubt it. The dam is cracked and giving way. A Republican party defeated in the upcoming election would be wondering what its post Trump future is. They would quietly acquiesce here, preferring other culture war issues. Transphobia, if I had to guess.

Oh contraire.

The most ardent liberals have become reverential, bordering on religious, in the way they speak of many of their chosen issues. Pretentious, moralistic, and often obnoxious.

This would be great for the party. Stoners usually don't have any of those qualities. They have quietly become the center over the past two decades, and it would be to Harris' benefit to advance a social issue distant from the moralism that has come to define liberalism in middle America's understanding.

I have my doubts, I suspect those under the Trumpian Spell in the GOP would riot as they did on Jan 6th and would have to endure another round of Trump eather until he’s re-elected (he’d be constitutionally barred from running a third term), barred from reelection through legal means, or kicks the bucket (He is 79 at the time of this post).

I wouldn’t call it liberalism, per say. More like Overzealous Progressism. I agree that Harris would benefit on reaching out towards centrists (your “I just wanna grill/game/chill” people), the politically homeless, and the frustrated moderates.

Other than the official Democratic Party Platform, it’s hard to determine Harris’s political positions and debunk and dispel any sort of disinformation have given onto her (e.g. that’s she’s a Marxist and a Communist. Don’t @ me about that since I already read the PolitiFact article about that to debunk the rightist talking point fed to me).

She posted this yesterday:

By the way, to continue our discussion from earlier. You said housing/rent prices was one of your concerns. I initially said I doubted either party would address that significantly. But she has set a goal of 3 million new homes. So she does at least care about the matter and has a target. Of course I can't guarantee that she'll follow through. But Trump almost certainly wouldn't do anything to bring rents down; his instincts would all be with the landlords.

Vance repeats baseless claim about Haitian immigrants eating pets

A baseless claim that illegal immigrants from Haiti have been eating domestic pets in a small Ohio city has been repeated by Republican vice-presidential candidate JD Vance - but officials have told BBC Verify there have been “no credible reports" that this has actually happened.
In a post on X on Monday, Vance claimed that illegal immigrants from Haiti were “causing chaos all over Springfield, Ohio”.
“Reports now show that people have had their pets abducted and eaten by people who shouldn't be in this country. Where is our border czar?” he wrote, referring to a title Republicans have been using to criticise the Democratic nominee, Vice-President Kamala Harris.
As of Tuesday, the post has had more than 9 million views, according to X’s figures.
US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby called Vance's comments "dangerous" and a "conspiracy theory... based on an element of racism".

Where did the claim come from?

The claim appears to have come from a number of different sources which have been turned into a cohesive - though baseless - story by pro-Trump social media accounts.
At a 27 August meeting of Springfield’s city commission, a local resident who describes himself as a social media influencer launched into a speech against Haitian immigrants.
He gave a long list of grievances, including that they were slaughtering park ducks for food, and accused city officials of being paid to bring in immigrants, but provided no evidence for these claims.
A claim about a cat being killed by Haitian immigrants was made on a Facebook post focusing on crime in Springfield, and attributed by the poster to the friend of a neighbour’s daughter.
The claims were also reflected in a photo posted on Reddit of a man carrying what appears to be a dead goose in Columbus, Ohio.
Separately, a news report from late August about a woman arrested for killing and eating a cat has also been circulating online.
Many right-wing commentators have referred to the woman as Haitian and pointed to the report as evidence for the baseless claim that Haitian immigrants have been engaged in similar activity.
However, the incident took place in Canton, Ohio, about 2.5 hours away from Springfield, and the news report does not mention her nationality.
Canton Police told the BBC: “We have not dealt with any complaints of Haitian immigrants at all”.
In addition to Vance, Elon Musk has also posted memes referring to the baseless claims which have been viewed millions of times.

Charlie Kirk, the CEO of conservative activist group Turning Point, said: “Residents of Springfield, OH are reporting that Haitians are eating their family pets”.
And official Republican party social media channels, such as the Republican House Judiciary Committee X account, have also referred to the claims.
The account posted an AI-generated image of former president Trump hugging a duck and a cat with the caption “Protect our ducks and kittens in Ohio!”.
That post was seen nearly 70 million times.
BBC Verify spoke to the Springfield City Commission about the claims.
Officials told us: “There have been no credible reports or specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community.”
On Tuesday, Vance appeared to row back on his previous comment and said on X: "It's possible, of course, that all of these rumors will turn out to be false."
The BBC has contacted the Trump campaign for comment.

Haitian immigrants in Springfield

Springfield, a rust belt city in south-west Ohio, is home to about 60,000 people and has seen thousands of immigrants arrive in recent years.
Many are from Haiti, and city officials say up to 20,000 have made Springfield home in recent years, reversing a long decline that saw the city’s population drop by more than 20,000 over the last 60 years.
The new arrivals have revitalised local industrial companies but have also put a strain on public services. Mr Vance, a senator representing Ohio who grew up about an hour away from Springfield, has repeatedly talked about the city on the campaign trail.

She mostly needs to just ignore Trump. Think of herself as speaking through the moderators to the American people. Number one task is just to inform. Project confidence, but also that joyful optimism. If she wants to get a jibe in, do it early in her speaking time, so he stews all through her time and then bursts out with his predictable response. At one point, when he doesn't answer a question, she should just summarize what he did say, pause, and say, "and that was his answer to [question]. I don't know if he didn't want to give the American people an answer, or if he forgot what the question was; either one is alarming."

Or this. This is fine.

Kamala Harris is winning this debate in astonishing fashion. Trump isn't anywhere near as bad as Biden, but he is completely tilted... rambling, ranting raving, throwing JD Vance under the bus, going off topic, saying nonsensical things...

Harris got him to lose his mind when she challenged his crowd size...

Trump is off the effing rails...
