I hope there isn't anything more to this than meets the eye,
like biological or chemical parts of the bombs.

33 confirmed dead in London blasts
British police have confirmed that 33 people have been killed in a series of bomb attacks on London's Underground.

That number is expected to rise after the number of fatalities are confirmed from an explosion on a bus.

Brian Paddick from the Metropolitan Police says three bombs exploded in the Underground system and one on the bus in Tavistock Square.

In one of the attacks a bomb destroyed a wall between two Underground tunnels and three trains were affected.

Seven were killed in a first explosion in an Underground railway tunnel near Moorgate on the edge of London's financial district, 21 in a second near King's Cross and another five at Edgware Road station in west London.

Police received no warning and have so far received no claim of responsibility.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Paddick says it was a callous attack that was deliberately designed to kill and injure innocent people.

An ambulance service official says that 345 people have been injured, 45 of them seriously.

"We have treated 45 patients with serious or critical injuries including burns, amputations, chest and blast injuries and fractured limbs," Russell Smith said.

He says there are 300 patients with minor injuries including shock and cuts.

Over 100 ambulances have been used.

Meanwhile, police cannot say if suicide bombers were behind the series of attacks.

"It is too early to say," Deputy Assistant Commissioner Paddick said.

"There is no indication anything other than conventional explosives were used," he said.

Police and transport officials say the underground rail network will be seriously affected for some time.

Regarding Hotels - I hope that they charge the normal or even discount rates for the rooms

This is my last post for a while, so I'll pass on my condolences to anyone who has friends or relatives lost today.

Let us all hope this nation manages to keep it's cool over the next days, weeks, months and years. I fear the biggest challenge is going to be avoiding misguided retaliation, but I hope I am proved wrong.

Please keep the updates coming, we are all very concerned.

Retaliation against whom? What can the Bristish do that they have not already done? Well... there is one thing... but if they did they would become the very enemy they defeated 60 years ago... I hope that the Muslims are not rounded up. A minority should not cause the loss of civil rights of the the majority.

I doubt that that would happen, Azadre.

This is not the first warning we get. Im sure they'll try to pull it off sooner or later :(

Sir, I think you have a strange view of Britain. We do not go about rounding people up becasue of their religion.

Moderator Action: A lot of people are reacting with shock and outrage to the events that have happened in London. Many people are dead. Hundreds are injured. Please try to restrain some of the wilder reactions.

Many posters may have friends and loved ones involved.

To repeat my earlier message.

Just wanted to cheer up people in London (we love you England!) -

The main idea in terror is to make people feel unsecure.
True, people have died, but the same amount can die in a few days of car accidents.
However, millions are feeling insecure, and this is the terror's purpose.

Again, I am very sorry for everyone who has died or got injured today. :(
Best thing to do is to get back to normal life.
I'm still glad the olympics will be there, and Pink Floyd were not harmed :mischief:

kudos to Rik and Col for timely and very appropriate moderation of this thread, btw.

Denmark, Netherlands and Italy is what I've been hearing.

"try to put it off sooner or later" ? They've got an impressive success-rate. I don't recall ever hearing of a large scale AQ attack being discovered just in time. They did succeed in New York and Madrid and -if they truly are behind it, which is not 100% certain for me yet- London.
However, I will not change my life on any detail at all. If you let fear of terrorists (or a desire for retaliation for that matter) come into your life; the terrorists have won. And I won't change anything in my life if AQ does strike my country, or even my city; even if people I love are amongst the victims. I love life too much to have it taken away from me.
I do however understand if people feel differently about this. It's easy for me to say what I would do; without actually being in that situation.

Well, at first, and for a while, liek msot Brits it was joking and laughter.
For most of the day actually. Part of the mentality.
Now it's started to sink in. I feel crap.
I dunno how I feel. Not angry, somewhat sad.
However, I feel a lot of animity towards Blair.
I have said this, and I will say it now, this is in my opinion, because we went into Iraq. Had we not, I don't think it would have been like this.
It's not the IRA, it's another group.
Blair came on the telly and gave a load of BS.

The milenium bomber was stopped. Also there were several other foiled plans before 9/11.

I totally second your statement ... well done mods :goodjob:

EU - an italian spokesman is talking about forming a central group which will encompass all police and security organisations in order to share info on terrorists movements and related data ... alerts will be issued etc

.

My mum got the last train before it happened, so she was OK.

Phew.
