Finally, your chance to redesign the flag of New Zealand

I really like this one.

However, I read somewhere that the *best* flags are easily drawn by a fifth grader or something. Which doesn't really have to do with childhood indoctrination, just that the average drawing skills possessed by most people are about in line with those of fifth graders.

And this flag is quite complicated.

Yeah, it's way too complicated, even though it's good looking from a design perspective. Maybe it's good for a national seal.

Also, I thought part of the point was to get rid of the Union Jack? I'd advocate for something that abandons the red-white-blue color scheme entirely, we have too many of those in the world already.

That's supposed to be an Anglo-union flag it, it has a canadian maple leaf and the stripes and stars for Usa

Frankly, I've never liked the stripes on the American flag. They remind me of a carny's pinstripe shirt, or a movie theater popcorn box.

I'd be happy if all flags were black. I'm still not sure I see any point to them.
That would make the Olympics even more depressing.

The thing about flags is that they're another form of heraldry. And the best designs are the simple ones, since those are the ones that can be most easily seen and discerned at a distance.

The white fern on the black background is simple, but elegant. I'm not sure if it would be in conflict with anything already registered, though.

That was one of the headaches we ran into, doing heraldry in the SCA - there were rules of tincture, RL rules governing certain charges that couldn't be used because of conflict or custom, and they couldn't be in conflict with anything previously registered (there are other rules about how similar two devices can be and still be considered different).

They should save themselves the trouble and just change it to the silverfern, it's the obvious choice.
I agree, that would be very easy to identify. However I'm wondering whether black is too harsh as a main colour. That's why I believe getting in some sort of compromise between the current existing flag and the silverfern (as the one I posted above) could probably federate more people. It would be less difficult to swallow for traditionalist and it would still strengthen the identity of New Zealand.

If I'm being serious, I agree here. Work in the unofficial national symbol, but keep the color scheme for traditionalists.
