Foreign Policy: UniversCiv

In their last message, I think they agreed not to settle the mountain range, and asked us also not to. My interpretation is that they should not settle any further south from their stone city.

Message draft to UCiv.

Hi, UniversCiv,

We wanted to reconnect, and to restart conversation. To that end, we've prepared handy conversation starters:

Firstly, our NAP expires in roughly 15 turns, but the exact end date is a little vague - as is the renewal process. Could you shed some light on the matter?

And second, we just wanted to confirm that our settling agreement is that neither of us should settle the mountain range between us. That will probably need renegotiating later, once other settling options are exhausted, but for now this works for us.

We eagerly await your response.

It's resolved to me in that I don't really want anything to do with these guys anymore. I don't care if them asking us to stay away was justified or not- the fact is they still went right next to our borders even though we did stay away from theirs. It's just so obvious to abide by your own demands, both in Civ and in life. Let's just let the NAP expire and be on our way.

I'm not advocating war or anything, but let the NAP expire and let the spider webs grow on our embassy. Let's see UniversCiv take the ball in diplomacy.
This is still my stance. I vote we don't send anything. I don't want to work with a team that doesn't display common sense. If they want to talk to us, let them talk to us. Otherwise, let's work with the other six teams.

My position on diplomacy is to always keep trying, forgive most transgressions because a friend is always better than an enemy. If they treat everyone like they did us, they'll be in sore need of a friend, and having them dependent on us would be beneficial.

Usually I'm quite easy on forgiving and forgetting transgressions, but when it comes to UCiv I have to say I am in full agreement with regentman's suggestion. I also vote we do not send them anything at the present time.

Well with their power graph spiking I would be curious to see if we can elicit a response from them and maybe get a better idea of what they are planning. So I would be fine with sending them a message just to see what they say back. For the record i'm still not inclined to trust them though and I doubt my feelings on this will change.

I also think there is no harm in sending the message and learning whether they want to extend the NAP. The message is carefully worded :D, we never say we are offering them NAP extension, just asking what their thoughts are

Yes, careful talking can rarely harm us. If we are not planning a major invasion on them so we need to keep in secret, there is no harm in talking.

I also approve the message. That's 5-2 in favor of sending. Let's take another day to give it a full 48 hours and get the translation ready, then send as long as there's still a majority.

...they'll be in sore need of a friend, and having them dependent on us would be beneficial.
Until them being dependent on us is no longer "good" for them, then they'll throw us under the bus while hopping into another team's arms.

Just let it expire- let them send the first message. If everything was a misunderstanding and they weren't being hypocrites on purpose, we should be seeing something from them soon anyway regarding extending the NAP. And if we don't see a message from them, then we know we didn't waste any time sending one in the first place. Win-win.

Speaking with people is worthwhile. The pen is mightier than the sword. If we have the sentiment that we dont want war now, why would we dont try to get that NAP with speaking which is for free?

Unless we're planning on attacking them (which we're not) a NAP is good news. Who knows -- it might even embolden them to attack a different neighbour knowing they don't have to worry about us pouncing when their troops are away. That'd be nice -- if they hobble themselves and another neighbour with a fruitless war of attrition.

Right, that.
Bonjour, UniversCiv,

Awesome, message sent.

2metraninja, could you send them an in-game message as well, in case they're not checking their team email?

Yes, the message was sent in both English and French.

This was just posted in the public thread.

Our UniversCivilization website is experiencing technical difficulties at the moment. It could be that our diplomatic message processing gets slowed down for a moment. Our apologies :)

Probably won't get an answer from them for awhile, then. Might be worth getting together a follow-up message to send when their site comes back online, so we don't get lost in the shuffle.

Finally, we got an answer:

Hi Talonschild,

Sorry for the late response. We just agreed on a working process for our diplomacy.
We are still willing to develop fair relations with CFC and to extend the NAP as well as find a settling agreement. How does all that look like on your side?

Bye
Yuufo

Just to refresh, this is the message they are responding to.

So, they are still willing to develop fair relations with us? Doesn't sound like a strong endorsement of our friendship. I guess a NAP is still a good thing since we have no plans on attacking them in the short-term, and we want to protect ourselves from any opportunistic Worker steals with that 2-move warrior near our borders. Maybe propose something to T120 or T140? Let's not do another NAP that expires on T130, since it's better to stagger the end-dates of our NAP's (so that RB and UCiv can't both team up against us on T130). Whatever we decide, let's learn our lesson and not do a NAP that expires in X turns, but rather a NAP that expires on Turn X, to avoid any confusion.
