How would society change if we suddenly invented the hoverbaord like in Back to the Future?

I can't imagine that the benefits would outweigh the drawbacks.

But its not that much advanced over the wheel.. and they are not causing the collapse of society..

A board would require a smaller version of the technology it would take to hover a larger vehicle (ie - automobile). By the time of a board things will be long changed. 5th Element anyone?

We can hover 3 ounces of plastic and metal into the air if the hovering device is connected to a copper wire that is being powered by an incredible amount of power.
