I got that one playing at the Chieftain level! Now that's humiliating!

After gifting Mao with something, he says something about friendship surviving until "the heavens rain, er -- big rocks down upon it". Too lazy to look it up to be sure :P

Also, Mao said that there was a distrubing buildup of military forces near one of his cities...when the only units I had near there were Workers O_o Wha?

He says "It is always good to greet a 'friend' and 'ally', what is it that troubles you?
I ask him to leave my territory and he declares war.
NOTE: I have mutual protection pacts with two civs and it is the Mesopotamia Scenario.

I get this alot when trespassing in Spains territory
"Is that a Dutch hobbo near Madrid, William?"
Also when contacting the Byzantine I get this alot but this was right before they declared on me,
"We are surrounded by barbarians, Pachachuti, and only if two civilized nations like the Byzantine and Inca can band together can we hold against the tide of chaos."
Or something akin to that :P

What cracks me up every time is when i offer some competing civ 1 gold (or world map in, say, year 2000) as a "token of goodwill" and the leader tells me, "Thank you, Hiawatha. This will do much to heal the rift between our people."Often, if i'm bored with a game, i offer this gift just to get a chuckle.

This, from Brennus, after asking for a loan of gold:
