Future Update - Speculation Thread

I'm trying a new tactic:
Instead of just waiting patiently, now I'm whipping myself into a fanatic frenzy for being now sure that next week there shall be a teaser or announcement!

We'll see how it goes..!

Been there, done that.
Doesn't work.

Now I am just lying in my couch lethargically, trying to train my cat by mind control to press the F5 button.
Doesn’t work either, maybe because she is just imaginary (but still very cute).
Maybe I should get a real cat first.
Do you think, cats can be trained to press the F5 button?

(Important edit, because I had an idea: I could glue a fish on it!
Edit 2: The button, not the cat. Weirdos!)

I honestly believe that the additional depots are purely for conmunication in an official unofficial way. Seems like a cheap way to say 'something is coming' without promising anything and without going through the marketing channels.

Whether all the speed references is a hint about feature(s) or it us just to say 'coming as fast as possible' will be interesting to see.

It now seems pretty clear the depot names are just a way to communicate with us, as evidenced by Kevin's post and soonTM. That also make it extremely likely that the number of depots does not indicate multiple DLC.

Why imagine a cat, when you can imagine a catgirl?! Nya!

What kind of announcment would be this time ... 2 day stream of something, livestream, social media post, hmmm ... And if it is like small expansions/DLC model they are following, would they say it right away ... or just, here is something for Civ 6 next month and we cant talk about anything else.

If FXS aren’t releasing a Third Expansion, I wonder if they may actually end up getting a fair bit of negative press. There’s been so much hype for a third xp - and it was clearly foreshadowed by the leaker - that I think not doing one, and not telling people it wasn’t happening before now, might not play very well.

Separately. I’m really looking forward to some unit gaps and a few other things getting tweaked. I’m really over my Classical Swordsmen getting smashed by Medieval Crossbows, and being unable to take walled Cities with Knights that can’t use Rams or Towers, all because there’s no Medieval Upgrade for Melee. And don’t get me started on the lack of a Medieval upgrade for Siege.

I'm also joining the camp saying that the multiple depots is not evidence of multiple DLC coming but an unofficial form of communication.

This combined with the evidence of the age review depot suggesting more substantial content makes me think we are getting a third expansion.

The major evidence in the other direction is the survey which suggested a season pass approach of mini expansions.

But who knows I might be wrong

I’m not too worried about the survey. I don’t think it rules out a Third Expansion, because it could have just been focused on post-Third Expansion content.

I’m more worried about having only ten Steam achievements. To me, that says Civ / Scenario DLC not Third Expansion.

Just because there are people on CivFanatics that like to put up hundreds of posts speculating and going off-topic, does not mean there is "so much hype". I haven't read a single news item on Civ 6 in the last months anywhere outside of CivFanatics or a specific website pertaining to the Civ franchise.

Outside of this bubble, I would say there is no hype, and barely any knowledge of anything happening. I wouldn't be surprised if a majority of players wouldn't even know anything is going on behind the scenes. I therefore also wouldn't think there would be a "fair bit of negative press".

Once whatever it is they are working on comes out, I'm sure the headlines will be the same as before. "CIV DLC brings new [fill in features / civ / whatever here]" along with "but is it enough to blow new life into the series?" or "and it is amazing", just like we saw with the R&F and GS DLC.

Whatever comes out, people fantasise about it, will buy it, enjoy it, complain about features missing or not working as intended, until something new is on the horizon, and the whole cycle starts over.

People that have not bought the DLC yet did so because of specific reasons, like not being able to get enough access to mod the game, or an incomplete worldbuilder. Unless the DLC brings something that specifically counters their reason for not buying in the first place, I highly doubt they will be swayed to buy this time around.

That said, there is a 99.9% chance I'll buy it as soon as it is announced, and a substantial chance that it will be worth my time and money.
I'm not that excited about it that I can't sleep, but I am very much looking forward to it.

the civilization business model is kind of broken. When a new civ game comes out it takes at least 2 years (3 in case of civ 5) for it to be preferable over the last one. When development stops. And this is quite soon. The game is still lacking on so many area’s. Not so much on content but halfbaked systems. I guess i dont have to name them all for civ 6 as there are so many.

What we truly need is a business money simular to eu4. A solid 7 year of development after launch. Why would you create a new game as a company when you could improve it so much. Less based on content pushing. And more on making the core features work.

i agree that in this world of "give me new shiny things all the time or I am bored" , the wait times are too long between full blown expansions. Every 4 months a DLC with 1 or 2 new mechanic(s) and much needed patches caters a lot better to mentioned audience.
Also what i like about paradox is their dev clashes life on twitch with a commentator running the show. You learn a lot about the game the newest mechanic and it is interesting to see how the devs are playing, it gives a lot of insight on what they perceive as good , overpowered etc. and their end of game roundtalk is pure gold.
I know we talk a lot about paradox right here when we should talk about firaxis , and i believe we would do just that , if they would communicate between expansions. Just once a month a single post stating "we see you , we read the forums" is not much to talk about ( 5 pages worth in 2 topics is actually a lot ) . I think this is because a lot of us are also playing their games since they are also producing strategy games with a lot of depth which seems to be what a lot of us are looking for to spent our leisure time with.

If this is just DLC with small mechanich and new Civ's I don't think there would be new global units.

I am also dissapointed for not having rifleman at least ... I mean from musketman to ww2 (or maybe even Vietnam war) infantry ... that's largest gap ever.

I mean, there’s this and this from the gaming press. There’s also plenty of references to a Third Expansion on Reddit, Steam and Steam.

Sorry, but I really wasn't trying to overstate the interest in a Third Expansion or suggest that masses of people are going protest in the streets if there isn’t one. I’m just saying that there’s been a reasonable amount of chat about a Third Expansion, not just on Civ Fanatics, that FXS haven’t done anything to discourage that chat (and have maybe even encouraged it a little), and that it’s possible some chunk of people might be disappointed if there isn’t one. That’s all.

But hey. Lots of games stop short before players want. Happens all the time.

I would like to complement Firaxis on keeping the content of the expansion secret, assuming there will be an expansion.

I'm all for more official content but there should be some acceptance that mods are going to fill in some of the 'gaps' in missing content. The mod "Moar Units" is pretty extensive and covers a lot of what is missing. If this is truly the last expansion I would hope they add some improvements moding . And either release the source code or give and explanation why not.

There are however 2kqa_a-d depots and a-e smoke tests, plus one non-letter smoke test, which would support multiple DLC speculation. I'd guess it would need exactly one more DLC depot.

Yeah, I think it's almost certain there's multiple pieces here, since they're using a lot more capacity than they used for any individual stuff before. Now, whether that's 2/3/4 pieces, nobody knows.

Possible DLC's speculation just for fun. Each one can also come with a scenario of some sort.
Assyria/Babylon and Alt. Leader for Egypt.

Vietnam and Alt. Leader for China.

Italy could go with either Portugal, Ethiopia or Byzantium.

Maya and a Native American Civ (like Navajo) if they go with a Spanish New World Scenario.

I wouldn't mind DLC, but I'm eager just to move onto Civ VII at this point. A third expansion would be the equivalent of scrapping the bottom of a bowl as far as I'm concerned, especially given the number of extant civs. Also, I am eager to move from the blue plastic aesthetic and "Civilopedia not accessible from the main menu; main menu also doesn't have new music unlike all previous Civ games" aspects of Civ VI.

Civ 7 likely wont be announced within 3 years after civ 6 development finishes. So you will be waiting for like 5 years from now. And if you wanted it to be somewhat playable it should be about 7 years. Comparable to what happened with civ 5 and 6.
So in other words. Best use what you have got now. Or move on with other game series. Or you are up for some heavy disapointment. I know back before civ 6 was announced it took like 2 years longer then anticipated before hearing anything about civ 6.
I was all excited untill i payed close attention to the art style. Now i am used to it and like it. But it was such a change from civ 5 realism.

Right now i am interested most in diablo 4, Age of Empires 4, starfield and elder scrolls 6. I could wait for them and get excited about it. but it is going to take 1 and a half years for Age of empires 4 at least, and even more for the rest of them.
Best to forget about it and play what is around now. Currently i am looking forward to what is going to happen with civ 6 next. Hopefully the game ends up like a real time sink if i can handle it flaws.
But also excited about europa universalis 4 (next expansion), iron harvest (beta+launch), battle brothers (next expansion), command and conquer/red alert 1 remastered, empire of sin and Total war Troy. Also i would like to take the time to learn cities skylines. It is a beautifull and complex game.

Resources devoted to DLC at this stage are resources not devoted to Civ VII, so that would mean Civ VII takes longer to make, unless Firaxis has new hires in this time of Working from Home Due to Coronavirus.

For now I've been playing some other historical-based games like the original Age of Empires or Assassin's Creed: Odyssey. While I miss Civ, I think breaks from Civ are natural at this point given that we've had Civ VI for several years now...
