[RD] Games as a Service

I do that sometimes , when I have monies I tend to buy "just in case"

Yeah, this is sort of how I do it too. Pretty much the only birthday/Xmas gifts that I don't discourage out of existence are deposits to my GoG wallet, which leads to extensive participation in the winter sale with the intention that I'll have new games throughout the year to download and install. Then I mostly play the same handful of games that I've been playing for years.

Do you routinely buy games and then forget about them?

I have literally hundreds of games on GOG and I've been buying them for years , so it's a statistical certainty, yes.

Are you spying me on? Get out of my flat!

I think about half the games I have on GOG were from giveaways. I have no idea what some of them even are.

All the time, I see games on sale for $2 and buy them. I buy all the cheap humble bundles. And never play any of them lol.

I wonder how many unplayed games there are because someone sees one game they want in a Humble Bundle and buys the entire thing.

I hid 50 games in my GOG library because I knew that I was never going to play them.

I have over a hundred hidden games but I tried them all first. They either suck or my laptop can't run them.

You can hide games?

Absolutely. In your library, each game has a down-arrow you can click to assign tags, view the support forum etc. One of the options is "Hide Game".

That sounds useful.

Netflix type deals I like. Pay a small amount lots of games.

Yeah, Xbox Gamepass is actually a really good deal for what it offers. Pretty much Netflix for Xbox games. I don't have it though because I don't play games as much as I used to so I don't think I'd get much value out of it.

I have it and hardly use it.

Xbox also had EA access it's about $25 a year and you get delayed access to new releases and older games going back to the 360.

Does GoG have a launcher like steam?

It's a lot easier using dlc/mods now over what it used to be like.

Does GoG have a launcher like steam?
It does ('GOG Galaxy'), but for a lot of the older games in their catalogue at least (not sure about current releases, haven't bought any) -- and assuming you know what you're doing -- you don't actually need to install the client in order to install your games.

Even if you do choose to install Galaxy, it's not nearly as intrusive as (I remember) the Steam-client: it only activates when you want to use it, it doesn't keep tabs on you offline, or insist on phoning home to report on you every time you boot up your machine, etc.

If you use multiple launchers, I cannot recommend Playnite enough. It supports:
  • Steam
  • GOG
  • Battle.net
  • Origin
  • Twitch
  • Uplay
  • itch.io
  • Epic
  • Bethesda
as well as any game installed on your hard drive that you import. It even supports emulators.

Although you might still need the launchers installed to actually play the games, it keeps it all together in one place. :)

If a launcher is closed and you need it, Playnite will launch the launcher for you. Sadly doesn't auto-close it afterwards but I think the developer is trying to figure out how to do that.

If I recall correctly GoG released one game that required Galaxy, faced a massive rebellion, and undid that.

I use Galaxy because it's a lot easier than individually downloading installers, remembering to check for patches and so on.

If it did become intrusive, I'd only load it to update games etc.
