GR12 - AWM vs 30 civs, Pangea

Uh, I did not notice vmxa's last message. Strange I did not get any notification that there is a new message. I will complete my set in a few hours.

The way I read it, Mark was able to continue on the 5th and since it was already the 4th. I figured to wait. Looks like we are back on track. Sorry Mark for the confusion.

It was my silly mind that gave me the impression you would have taken it, vxma. In Germany we say it is clearly an advantage to be able to read.

continue

I stop here to as I am too exhausted to play another turn. In Northern Extension there is just this one army as defnese as you can see in the picture. There are some foreign units that could attack, but normally they just pass. Somehow I forgot to rush the walls in both towns there.
I would take the risk.

I hope I did not leave too big a mess. Have fun with the new toys, although their count is not too high, yet.:)

I'm back, and I'll play after Vmxa according to plan.

We could lose Northern Fort to the attack of a single Korean LB, so we should move the redlined cav from Northern Extension into NF, if it has a full movement point left.

Also, two Korean knights could just walk (well, ride ;)) into South Fort, as things stand. So we probably have to risk attacking them with one or both of our two uncommitted armies in the area, hoping we don't lose many HP.

Greebly let me offer a graceful out, if this turn was over the line. I will post the logs and you can decide if you would rather backup and ignore the set. No problems from my side.

Anyway the thing is I decided that the North could not be held, by me with what was on hand and nothing was coming. I pulled back to the semi natural choke and held them off so far. The log follows and if you think it was crazy, I will delete the post.

Pre:
Tarsus making a Lib, but only has 8 commerce. I switch to a market as happiness can be helped now that it has an aqua. Can be switched back.

Eastern Spur is making a harbor, but only has 4 coastal tiles. So it will not be getting up to size 6, unless it gets culture as well. I switch to temple to get border expansion. Not so it can grow, but because we will get no town down near it to gain more tiles. This will further slow down troops and we can sell it after the borders pop.

Not really sure why Banking was the choice as I do not see making any banks and Frigates could be of some use. I would do Banking last.

I see we have at least 1 army not filled.

Rush walls in Gap Filler.

South Fort is undefended? Ok I am not going to spend this turn set sweating blood over those three poorly planned towns of Hill Fort, Northern Exposure and Cornerstone. I do not understand why we expanded out there. We had a choke at Southern and Northern that could be held and many units coming that way could have been killed and we could have even covered the towns behind it some in landings.

As it sits now we have nothing in South Fort, 1 pike in Corner, 1 3/4 cav in Northern Fort. 4 towns behind Southern have no defenses at all. Three more have a lone pike. To me this is crazy.

By adding three more towns in front we thinned ourselves even more and are at risk of losing many towns. Little is coming over to help and it take 4 or 5 turns to get there anyway.

Am I just a whimp or are we not over doing it? Why not hold the choke and hammer whatever comes while we secure the east. That border is very large and needs most of our forces, until we swing to the nort east and shorten the borders.

So I am going to move the 2nd to Southern (it had a settler that would be lost as 2 knights are right there and can reach it on the IT.

IBT:
At Gap a pike is killed with it doing no damaged to the Sumerian knight. I think a pike at Riverside killed a Port LB and went elite. One knight retreats from pike at Cornerstone.

Ok so here is the bad news. Northern Fort the 3/4 cav kills attacking LB and is redlined. Spear kills the cav and captures the town.
Those 3 towns past the so called forts are putting us at risk. We allow them to get past and capture a town like South Fort and they can run all the way to the core using our roads as most towns are undefended.

We were lucky that the Koreans had no moves left and the other civs moved after and were blocking each other or other towns could have fallen.

Landing are still coming at Babylon and behind and 4 of those towns are empty and the other 3 have a lone pike, so they are not going to do much. Pikes are cheap, but at this stage with no backup they are weak.

I also do not understand why we have workers at the forts were they can be captured, we have little to gain from trying to improve tiles there at this point, unless they are bait, do we?

1590AD:
I think I should abandon Hill fort and Northern Extension as well as Cornerstone and recaptured the Fort and move units into the two Fort towns.
Koreans have 26 units on our front. Rome has 34, Az 8 and Greece 6 and France 3. Rome has a pike next to empty Babylon. Most of these units are in our land right now.

Cav attacks the spear and captures Northern Fort. (1-0)
7th kills the pike at babylon and redlines, moves into Southern Fort. (2-0)
I see 4th/8th/12th are gone, don't know if they were scrapped or lost. Anyway I name an army the 4th near Northern Fort and it kills a pike (3-0). It kills a LB and enters Northern. (4-0)
13th kill Sumerian pike and 2 mdi (7-0).
Named knight army 8th and moved to Lake Tahoe. Named 12th knight and kill Sumerian K and moved into Gap Filler. (8-0)
5/5 cav kills dutch knight (9-0).
11th kills dutch knight losing 6 hp's (10-0).
Switch Sienna to settler as it was doing a cav with 63 turns to go.
9th kills 2 dutch pikes (12-0). Add cav to 20th in Blue Mountain.

We make two cavs this turn. Set research to 80% for Astro 5 turn -9gpt.
Abandon Cornerstone, Hill and North Extension.

Korean shows up with a cav. Mongols with a musket.

South Fort now has 9 bombardment units, a pike, a sword army and 2 damaged knight armies. Will upgrade the pike next turn.

North has 9 bombardment units. 1/4, 2/4 and a 4/4 cav. A 2/18 and 10/18 army.

Found 5 workers forted behind Northern Fort, so I moved them.

Riversend/South Hill and Crystal area has 5 or 6 empty towns that could not be defended if anything lands around there, so next turn I will try to move one cav back to cover.

A stack of workers next to Riverside and Eastern River irrigating next to enemy troops. I stop them and move them back. We do not need irrigation so bad as to risk them or have to cover them in these towns. I do not see any sense in putting workers at risk to do irrigating or minning at the front.

Later when you have spare old armies to cover, fine. We are not in a position to spare anything right now. Upgrade a pike in Eastern River as only the pike and a cav are there.
Rush walls in Incensify for 40g. 60g in New Hattusas. 68g in New Tarsus.

3rd kills redline Sumerian sword (13-0).
5/5 K kills Mongol MDI (14-0).
18th kills 4 Mongol MDI (18-0).
5th kils Mongol MDI and Pike (20-0)
19th kills Mongol MDI and Pike (22-0). All armies named now.

No new contacts. Known dead Spain/Arabia/Russia/America. Known civs 22. Unknown status China/Persia/Zulu and Byz.

Basically everyone is building Bach, Rome/Dutch/Korea making Shakes. Korea/Dutch making Magellan. Looks like Rome is top dog in research.

IBT:
a couple of roads cut in the far east. Ugly rng as a knight attacks a forted musket across a river at Eastern River and kills it with ease. No wall there. See a naked settler next to 1st. (0-1) [22-1]

1595AD:
Dutch want peace they have contact with Russia and Persia. Know Printing Press, Music and Astro. They have 165 gold.
Ottoman want peace and are the same, except 12 gold.

Katna finishes Aqua and I swap a beakerhead as we have no growth there. Still not sure about the courthouse there. The place only has 8 commerce and 6 shields.

Rush wall in Northern Fort.
13th kills Sumrian K (1-0)
9th kills 2 Dutch knights (3-0)
5/5 cav kills dutch knight makes leader (4-0).
1st captures settler.
3rd kills NumMerc (5-0).
cav kills Port spear (6-0).
Subborn Egyptian pike take 11th down to 6 HP's before dying (7-0).
11th kills 2/4 knight on the way back to town. (8-0).
12th kills Sumerian K (9-0).
Cav kills French horse (10-0). cav kills redline Korean cav (11-0).

We make only 1 cav this turn.

18th kills Port LB and Pike (13-0). 19th kills Henry's mdi (14-0).

I am not so sure I should have done this, but I sent the leader to the north to replace the sword army. I may want to grab him and use him elsewhere.

Cav kills Iroq MDI (15-0). Cav kills 2/4 knight goes elite and moves into Eastern. (16-0)
17th kills 2 (18-0). Cav kills french horse (19-0).
6th kills French K (20-0).
12th kills K (21-0). [43-1]

IBT:
Well it was real ugly. The Germans captured Incensify and everone shutdown. Pike died (0-1).
Musket defends and goes elite (1-1). Rome sent a number of units back somewhere. [44-2]

1600AD:

for the record, I screwed up and made a trade and then declared, not realizing that was not allowed. So the last three turns have been replayed as close as I could to the original I am very sorry to have dropped the ball, all the more so as I was planning on doing something else today.

I should have check the rules when the opportunity came up, but I was sure it was ok in this game, wrong again paleface.

Actually the biggest issue is that we were playing with no trades (see first page). Do you have the 1600 AD autosave? I would prefer to play the game without the trades done on that turn.

If you do then you could either hand it off in 1600 or replay to 1610 AD again (your choice).

The trades are the only issue that I see.

I, too struggled to hold the Northwest. More and more units were pouring in. I think it was the right decision to give that up. With all the hills the incoming units were harder to kill.

I took banking as astronomy and banking needed the same number of turns and we need it anyway to get industrial.

I was the one planting those 3 cities in the north. During my turns, we could easily hold those cities and advance. I didn't know there would be more units turning up. I had hoped we can raze cities there to create a buffer.

I also think we should replay those turns, the no trade is essential from the start and would alter the game.

It was reasonable to found those northwestern cities when we weren't under pressure there, and right to abandon them when we were. In a game on this scale some ebbs and flows are inevitable.

I'll wait for Vmxa to check in again before I play, so that we can learn whether he's got a pre-trade save and settle what my starting point will be.

Whoops I thought it was ok to trade on contact as long as no gpt were offered by us. Let me see where it occurred and backup as far as I have to to prevent it.

I still have whatever saves the game makes, so I can probably come close. Sorry, I almost came back to verify, but I thought I read a post where someone was mentioning it.

Anyway I know it is a back and forth and in the end we have to expand, but they are sending in more units than I am able to kill each turn. Mostly I can get the ones next to our towns done or damaged so they retreat, but killing about 30, while they send in about 40.

The one thing that I think could help in the east is if we cut roads with armies as they come and go. There was a flood of Incas that was able to go across the mountains using someones roads and reach us in 1 or 2 turns, instead of 4.

So let me review the log and figure out where the trade came in. It did very little to impact the game, shaved off three turns on astro and some cash.

It is a wonder I even noticed that we had contact with China. It just happend that I was looking hard at the F4 to see who was missing and I knew China and Persia were known to others, else I would not have see it.

The game probably should have a notification when contacts are given.

EDIT: I have the 1600AD autosave and it was prior to the trade. With the fairly detailed log I have, I shold be able to do things in the same order.

Thanks. Let's hope you can duplicate the 133-2 kill ratio. :goodjob:
