GR27 - AWE Archipelago vs 30 civs

I will unavailable from May 5 to May 11. Skip me if you need to.

Excellent work. :goodjob: Now that's a thorough turnlog.

Sending a single army off to attack enemy cities is always risky, although I understand the decision in this case, since we have to get going on offense.

I'm sure we have plenty of cash to upgrade our catapults to trebuchets, however, none of them are in a city with barracks.

We don't generally do this, even when we have plenty of gold; Greebley has established that the benefit is just too small. Sooner or later we'll have something better to do with our cash.

<on upgrading catapults>

The ironic part was that I trying to prove that cat upgrade was worthwhile when I did the analysis but turned out to be very wrong. To do a single extra point of damage each turn is an absurd amount of money. For example against defense 2 you need to upgrade 12 cats to trebs to do a single extra hp - a cost of 360 gold to get 9 hits instead of 8.

In any case I got it. Hope to finish this weekend.

Preturn: Its looking like we may be able to get some expansion in. We seem to have a comfortable number of units and there is good land to the southeast. I will work on getting some settlers out. We will see how it goes.

360 AD: Kill Spanish Spear and cover with an E* Spear and Cat (nearby Regular Archer) - with woods the odds should be good. Army retreats back. Will bring to city to heal.
Vs English Swords the Cats don't do well enough so I use my Army to kill 2

370 AD: Build Bingol. Some more English Sword die.

380 AD: Unfortunately a lot of units are heading to where we want to settle. Trying to get forces there.

390 AD: Continue to kill English to West. Spainish units to Southeast may be troublesome. Fortunately, no Spanish Swords.

400 AD: Lose Elite sword vs injured Spear. Kill more units.
Build Riza and Zonguldak. Zonguldak is way north. Riza is across the mountains in the SE.

410 AD: Build Kirkareli in the SE. Trying to push back Spanish units to claim lands.

IBT: Archer attacks a Spear but loses. Spain now has Swords as well

420 AD: Lost another sword vs an injured Archer. There are a lot of units coming at us, but we are still dealing with them.

IBT: Totally missed that a Treb was not covered and we lose it.

430 AD: Attacks coming everywhere but Salonika. Viking Horse are getting heavier.

440 AD: Hitting the main Spanish force now in the SE. Army is in area so we can Settle.

450 AD: A lot of injured units we can't reach. Under the SE Army is 3 settlers. I was thinking of settling where the Army is now and then next to the lake. Going south to settle near the Wines would give us a second Lux.

Notes:
We have a bunch of Workers on the front to advance roads. I think we want more to upgrade land some towns using unimproved lands.

I started some Markets. No real Libraries yet.
We still don't have Monarchy - the AI research is sub-standard. They must be hurting.

Impressive expansion. :goodjob:

In retrospect, we should have started a one-scientist run to Monarchy the moment it became possible, as an almost free precaution. I may still do it.

On the whole this has the feel of a successful game, but our failure to generate armies is really starting to tell. With normal Leader luck we'd have made good progress against our enemies' cities by now.

I've got it.

nice progress :goodjob:

I hope we can soon wear the enemies down enough and then start finding new land and more enemies. I feel we should not neglect that too long.

We now have 22 cities; the others are sitting at 18, max.

Could it just be us 4 on this landmass?

Good game up to now and a nice read! :goodjob:
I'm currently playing an AWM on a huge map (now around 250AD) and only generated 1 leader with 2 enemies on my continent! How is this possible? And I see the same with you guys. Is this bad RNG?

Ya, though it can also be the number of Elite units is low, which in turn can be due to bad RNG or it can be using them in risky attacks. Not having sufficient catapults/trebs for example can lead to higher number of Elite deaths than you would like - I have played in other games with that particular issue - here though we have enough. In this game we have also been a bit slow in building the Heroic Epic - once it completes next turn it will help with getting Armies.

450 (0): Bursa Heroic Epic --> Forbidden Palace; that is, we don't switch to the FP.

I'll settle the coastal spot under our army as suggested by Greebley, but I think I'll wait until our road network reaches that spot. Other than that I’ll try to settle the gap between Bolu and Karabuk, rather than pushing even farther south in a way that would lengthen our lines.

460 (1): We bombard and slay two Viking horsemen next to Mugla, generating a Great Leader, who immediately forms an army (2-0).

It's not easy finding non-elite swordsmen to put into the new army. I suppose that's good. :D

Our First Sword Army crushes an English swordsman outside Bolu (3-0).

We bombard and smash a Spanish spearman outside Aydin (4-0).

We cut down a redlined Viking horseman outside Antalya (5-0) and generate another Great Leader, who rushes the Pentagon in Bursa, where we have no accumulated shields. This is why we build the HE before the FP in AW. ;)

We slice up a Spanish spearman beyond Antalya (6-0).

Elsewhere there are various attacks we can't make because we don't have horses.

A forest chop next to Aydin reveals BG.

Bursa Pentagon --> FP, Kafa library --> barracks.

470 (2): We break six assorted Spanish units SE of Karabuk, getting away with a spearman attack due to a mis-click (12-0). Our army has a bad RNG run and will have to heal, though.

We found Cankiri on Greebley's southern site.

We hack down an English swordsman adjacent to Mugla, and another next to Bolu (14-0).

We trample a Spanish archer next to Antalya (15-0).

Istanbul marketplace --> settler.

480 (3): We expunge four Viking units around Antalya (19-0).

We shatter an English swordsman next to Mugla (20-0).

Things are heating up on the western front (Salonika to Bolu), where we can see 24 enemy units. We'll have to hope they attack our strong hill towns, rather than infiltrating.

490 (4): We wipe out a Viking force of three next to Karabuk and generate our third GL of the round, from eight elite victories so far (23-0). The Leader immediately forms our fourth army.

We extirpate two Viking units outside Mugla (25-0).

On the western front the Vikings commit themselves at Bolu, although the English prefer to infiltrate around Salonika.

500 (5): We liquidate a Spanish stack of four moved next to Cankiri in the south (29-0).

We exterminate four Viking units around Bolu (33-0).

Here and there we pick off another two enemy units (35-0).

We get a strike force of two four-unit sword armies moving towards Spain. It’s unfortunate that the Spanish have the Great Wall, but as far as we can tell they’re closer to our position than our other two enemies. So it’s still probably better to attack them than to send our armies on a long march to reach the English or the Vikings.

We found Iskenderun SE of Bolu, beginning to fill the Bolu-Karabuk gap.

The English choose to attack our lookout spearman on the mountain outside Mugla, which succumbs after accounting for one swordsman (36-1).

A forest chop around Denizli reveals BG.

Istanbul settler --> spearman, Denizli barracks --> swordsman.

510 (6): We rout two Spanish spearmen in Murcia, but the town remains garrisoned (38-1).

We found Tunceli at the mouth of the northern river—very close to Bideer, but eventually this town will reach size seven without an aqueduct.

520 (7): We winkle two enemy archers, one Spanish and one Viking, out of the woods near Iskenderun (40-1).

We auto-raze Murcia, held by a remaining garrison of two swordsmen (42-1).

We decapitate a Viking horseman outside Mugla (43-1).

We impale a Spanish spearman near Karabuk (44-1).

We overrun two Spanish swordsmen south of Cankiri (46-1).

The many English units next to Mugla don’t make the bad attacks into which we were trying to lure them, but move onto clear terrain.

Bideer courthouse --> swordsman, Salonika library --> barracks.

530 (8): We grind down seven English units, mostly swordsmen, adjacent to Mugla (53-1).

At Iskenderun we savage three assorted enemy units (56-1).

We bullyrag a Spanish swordsman SW of Cankiri (57-1).

540 (9): We auto-raze Exeter in the southern forest, held by two spearmen (59-1). We also carve up an English archer in the vicinity (60-1).

We cleave in twain a Spanish swordsman next to Karabuk (61-1).

We unhorse a Viking horseman adjacent to Mugla and generate our fourth GL of the round, who forms our fifth sword army (62-1).

A forest chop next to Tunceli reveals BG.

Kafa barracks --> swordsman, Mugla barracks --> swordsman, Iskenderun walls (two forest chops) --> trebuchet.

550 (10): We shoot down a Spanish archer landed next to Tunceli (63-1).

We found Sivas next to the ruins of Exeter, and finish filling in the Bolu-Karabuk gap.

We dispose of an English spearman next to Salonika and an English archer adjacent to Mugla (65-1).

We move two sword armies next to Seville.

Sixteen elite victories this round produced four Great Leaders.

Our sword army near Karabuk should proceed SW to join the two already in Spain; it isn’t needed for trivial border fighting.

We have enough cities to form an army with our next Great Leader, but not with the one after that. Apart from the capital, it’s even harder than usual to select the cities to produce the settlers we need, since we lack high-food towns. But we should try to choose places, such as Aydin and Antalya at the moment, which don’t have fresh water.

We have one settler in Bolu waiting to seize the nearby wines at an opportune moment, and one in Cankiri which can settle next to the small lake when it’s safe.

An asterisked elite swordsman is stacked with our sword army in Mugla and can join it next turn. Don’t let the asterisked archer in the same town create confusion. ;)

The Spaniards have demonstrated a tendency to land near Tunceli, so the swordsman Uskudar is about to complete should reinforce that area.

All our workers adjacent to Sivas should lumberjack next turn, which will get the town’s walls built immediately.

We’re ten turns into a minimum run to Monarchy, which is just as well since the GLib produced nothing this round.

I’ve continued Greebley’s infrastructure push, on a moderate scale. Including Bursa working on the FP we have three towns on non-military builds, which seems like the right level at the moment.

Taking the initiative:

lurker's comment:
Somebody had a bit of luck with the leaders this turn  Did you put 4 units in them all or only 3?

Four units. We have too much work to do on this continent to worry about keeping armies galleon-mobile yet.

absolutely excellent :goodjob:

Of course we do not bother about shippable armies yet. There are still plenty of towns to take. I wonder whether we will hit the city limit here

Good work. That was a very effective Heroic Epic

I would continue to push southeast toward the wines with any new settlers. The extra Lux will help.

Hopefully we will also find the Spanish Iron and take it out.

Roster:
Greebley
Northern Pike - Just Played
markh - Up
ThERat - On Deck
Commando Bob
