GR27 - AWE Archipelago vs 30 civs

Mark doesn't take credit for demolishing the Great Wall along with Madrid. That's a great step forward against the Spanish. :goodjob:

The long anarchy is a bad break given our lack of high-food tiles, though. The next player will need to manage our cities carefully to minimize population loss, using the trick of alternating turns of sufficient food and turns of restored order. We can't let all seven cities now set to starve (actually eight, but Ankara has enough accumulated food) fall to size four.

bummer about the long anarchy and worse, with so many cities starving.

I will try my best to minimise this of course and go for alternate disorder, that means 6->5, 4-> 3, 2-> 1 will be for disorders and high food.

Hope we get out of this relatively unharmed.

Got it

Pre-Turn
If we could get the wines online, the whole situation would be easier
we have 3 settlers but need to push them forward

MM for high food and revolts

IT enemy units invade our land, I guess there is no choice but to pull back our armies for the time being
8 cities go into disorder

1. 660AD
remove 4 enemy units in the very thin east to discover our main strike force in the west
we will have to shift some units over
pull back an army to autoraze Batsfjord to make way for our wine city eliminating 2 units in the process
in an attempt to ease pressure in the east, pull another army over to defeat mace
this allows us to bombard more units, redline 2 swords and kill one
[8-0]

need to let cities starve this turn, no choice

IT we repel a Viking archer landed on a mountain, the English all head home??? [9-0]
4 cities starve and there is nothing I can do

2. 670AD
defeat an English archer in the west, take out a settler pair there as well
in the center we slash 2 Viking units
in the east we eliminate 2 Viking horses, but there are Spanish maces and the like around
move our settler closer to the wine
our southern army takes out a mace and spots another iron source almost in the hands of Spain
[16-0]

IT Viking horses invade our land in bigger numbers, then I get the shock moment as Spanish
maces attack Yozgat defended by an army. Luckily we defend well and kill 3 of them [19-0]

3. 680AD
even though I sacrifice a river settlement, I get a settler right on top of the wine
take out 3 Viking horses and shift units around
move 2 swords next to Richmond [22-0]

IT English attack out of Richmond but lose their archer
Spanish continue to attack Yozgat but end up losing 2 units [25-0]
2 more towns starve

4. 690AD
found Winery, the happy situation should be a little better now
take out 7 units around our fronts including a settler pair
defeat 2 spears and raze Spanish Teruel for 24 gold and 4 slaves [34-0]

IT lose a sword defending against a horse [34-1]

5. 700AD
defeat 5 units in the east to clear space for more settlements
in the west, take out 3 English units after redlining them [42-1]

IT lose a spear at Mugla versus a sword [42-2]
finally we are monarchists

6. 710AD
set lux to 20%, we make 45gpt only, our infrastructure is pretty poor
our bombardments aren't that great and the English threaten the western towns in numbers
take out a mere mace, start to attack Gloucester taking out a spear [44-2]

IT this time our defenses do well and we defeat 2 swords [46-2]
Carthage seems to aim our hinterland with galleys

7. 720AD
I can't stand those Spanish maces/swords in the mountains
defeat 2 of them
take Cordoba after defeating 2 spears for 25 gold, Gloucester faces the same fate
both towns are next to each other [52-2]

IT very good news as I witness a Viking galley sink trying to defeat a Carthage galley
our units production is back to churning out some stuff

8. 730AD
found Sinop on the coast
around that area, defeat 4 units, in the west we bombard some English troops [56-2]

9. 740AD
found Van to close some gap in the east
take out 2 units in the east, in the west 2 English get defeated [60-2]

10. 750AD
defeat 2 spears and take out the last eastern coastal city there is, Almeria
take 3 Spanish units and move next to Birmingham
in the west, take out 2 English units [67-2]

The Vikings have not been seen for a while, guess they are busy fighting Carthage
we didn't get a single tech, this is quite astonishing

We also get the FP next turn which should help

gr27750.jpg

The tech pace is ridiculous, but as we come nearer to chivalry we should see where to get our horses for knights from. Up to now we only have Ragnar fighting us with horsemen.

We can check if Carthage is far ahead in Tech. If so we could make Galleys and try to meet another civ.

Week days have limited time for me, so Commando Bob, go ahead and play even if it takes you to the weekend to finish - it would probably take me that long.

Good work getting through our anarchy and grabbing the wines. :goodjob:

The Carthaginians are behind us in tech, and the fact that they seem to be distracting the Vikings so much argues that they're on our own backward island.

If the civs we know already don't push us as far as Education, we could experience one of those rare GLib bonanzas, giving us most of the MA tech tree, when we meet more advanced overseas civs.

We should try to resume our advance on the Spanish core, since we know where it is, unlike the other enemy cores.

The next player shouldn't be reluctant to cash-rush settlers in all the southern towns now building them--Yozgat, Cankiri, and so on. We have plenty of gold and we need those settlers now, not when they'd naturally complete.

Well done dealing with the redirected enemy offensive.

Did you not see the discussion of why upgrading catapults to trebuchets is useless?

We've had two sword armies just sitting around guarding minor towns in the extreme south for more than ten turns now. I understand how the situation arose, and it's no one's fault, but it represents a bad waste of attacking power. Since we're at the city limit anyway, the next player should just settler-abandon Almeira, replacing it with a town squeezed in around Van if nothing more aggressive is possible, to free that army at least. Settler-abandoning Gloucester also comes into consideration.

On the whole, I'd say we've hit the global city limit at a fortunate time. Our empire is a reasonable size, and now none of our enemies can grow, except at one another's expense.

Not until you mentioned it; sorry. I saw trebuchets hitting the Swords in the hills and the catapults missing them (mostly, it seemed).

I didn't like keeping one Army in Almeria, since we did have a need for it other places. At the same time, we didn't have any extra units to send down there to free up the armies. We might have, if we hadn't learned Feudalism. We had a lull in units due to the higher cost, somewhat offset by the Forbidden Palace reducing corruption.

It didn't occur to me to settler-abandon either city, even after we hit the city limit.

Which means we can abandon Almeria and Gloucester, build two cities elsewhere, and be assured that the AI cannot build where we have abandoned. But you already knew that.

Sure, I know you were stuck with the situation. But now we can correct it.

Preturn: I move the Army and spot a solitary Red unit. Its the Byzantines - probably tried to place a settler, but there isn't one now. They have monotheism that we don't have. Declare war.

I also start Invention at min. Might even need full research after meeting the Byz next turn.

Looks like I can get the Capitol to 15 shields for Pikes. Switch to Pike to to finish build next turn and have a needed MP for Capitol.

IBT: We get Monotheism from the GLib.

860 AD: We have a lot of unimproved hills near Capitol Will start working on that to bring more squares into play

Armies can move toward the front now without disbanding yet because if a unit is dropped off next to the unprotected towns to the South we can disband at that time.

We could use a few more Workers I think. Too much unimproved land - mostly hills.

Bombard but don't kill Spear. We still have no horses to attack and retreat with to get it.

Check for Libraries. They are cheap and we may want them soon.

870 AD: Push forward a little bit using Armies to defend.

880 AD: Leader fishing pays off as an Archer gets us a Leader. Fill it with MDI since we have no Horse for Knights.

Want a city to extend our wall South near Spain. Abandon Almeria so I can build another city, Forthright.

First Army next to Valladolid Other Armies are now on the front and will be able to advance soon.

890 AD: Kill two Pike and Valladolid is Captured.
English have a stack of 9 units next to Forthright. Kill 5 of 6 Sword in the Stack.
Armies find Barcellona, the current Capitol of Spain. Its size 9 on hills.

900 AD: Find Jaen as well in the Hills South of Valladolid. Kill first 2 Pike of Barcellona - have 3 Armies for the job Upgraded some Vet Sword.

IBT: Babylon completes Sun Tzu. Byzantine completes Knight Templar

910 AD: Capture Barcellona. Find Toledo (size 11).

IBT: Two pike are lost in Birmingham.

920 AD: Two Pike fall in Toledo. Capture Jaen with Iron near it. Spain no longer has Iron.
Spot Valencia and Santiago

IBT: Forgot to wake some Workers and they get capture. Fortunately we can get them back.
Spot a Horseman (Viking) near Toledo

930 AD: Toledo is Captured. Santiago and Valencia are attacked.

IBT: Horseman Pillages us. We get Chivalry

940 AD: Capture Santiago. Army near Valencia is Healing.

IBT: Units on a Mountain successfully defend. An MDI goes for an MDI on Hill with 2 hp (was one) and loses).

950 AD: Capture Valencia. Victoria Spotted. Armies get rather damaged attacking with more than one in the red. Should be safe though.

I am hoping we can take out Spain Entirely. They are down to 6 Cities. We can stop starving the cities once we know we can take them out. We currently are above them in culture. We can see the borders of 3 of them
The Locations of the current Spanish cities seem reasonable. I would keep for the improvements, unless we see some place that is definitely superior.
Our unit costs are 90 gold now so I am not sure how many more we want. Our gpt is 110 so I have kept building more. However we may want temples and such - I haven't built those yet. Costs the same as an MP but also gives culture and higher culture means you can keep large cities for instant jumps in science.
Spain is definitely getting weaker, while England still has some oomph (more quiet recently). Didn't spot Viking units at all. Is Carthage on our continent? It might be if they are keeping the Vikings busy. With the number of units we have though there are really plenty.

nice progress :goodjob:

We still have not spotted any horses? That's a pity because knights would be nice now. With unit costs mounting, it is better to have less but better units. At least we know that the Vikings have some.

Byz might not be on our continent and have simply dropped off a settler pair. Do they have the Great Lighthouse?

Now we're rolling.

I've got it.
