GR27 - AWE Archipelago vs 30 civs

A final note - It would be good to get our Armies near Carthage working better together. They got spread out trying to hold the line, but my initial intent was to have them attacking in pairs (so 4 armies in the south). The issue is the length of the line we need to defend - some town builds might help with that. We have settlers and Knight have just finished arriving to the front.

Well done pushing forward in the north. :goodjob:

Another round without a new GL/army. We must be far below normal expectation again.

I've got it.

fine progress, do we actually have saltpeter within our borders?

Yes, three sources already hooked up, though until we have Metallurgy/cannon that's really a liability (musketmen at twice the price of pikemen).

RL is limiting my opportunities to play, but so far we've taken thirteen enemy cities in seven turns. I'll post in time for the next player to play on the weekend.

1300 (0): Jaen indeed can't grow much, but having taken the trouble to build a library there we might as well keep it.

The Vikings and Carthaginians counterattack outside Stockholm and Cirta, respectively. We prevail in three cases and lose an MDI.

At least ten Dromons bombard Friendly.

The English land three MDI and a spearman next to Skutari. We're short on units there, for an area where the AI has been landing repeatedly, and we'll probably have to abandon the city.

The Sumerians complete Leonardo.

1305 (1): We bombard and raze Stockholm, held by two pikemen (2-0).

We take Carthaginian Oslo, held by two Numidians and an LB (5-0). We capture a catapult.

We take Malaca, held by two Numidians. We sink at least one galley when we enter the town (8-0).

Outside cities there’s no combat at all.

We abandon indefensible Skutari.

We found Spanish Harlem and Shekure to keep the world at the city limit.

We lose a knight holding Oslo (8-1). Possibly I should have held off on this turn’s attacks until we had settlers properly positioned so that we could have razed everything.

Twenty-two Dromons bombard Friendly.

We peel off a worker from Istanbul and cut the lux rate to 20%, as suggested.

1310 (2): We take Cirta, held by three Numidians and an MDI (12-1).

We smite four Viking units, two knights and two MDI, around the ruins of Stockholm, and another Viking knight around Oslo (17-1).

Around Cirta we slay three Carth units (20-1).

We abandon Rusucurru and Malaca and found Red and Shevket.

1315 (3): We take Nottingham, held by three pikemen (23-1).

We strike down three pikemen of Bergen’s garrison, but an MDI still holds the city (26-1).

We hunt down the four English units which forced us to abandon Skutari (30-1).

We vanquish one pikeman of Bodo's garrison, and one Numidian in Rusaddir (32-1).

We abandon Cirta and found Hayrire.

Outside Urfa we bludgeon an English MDI (33-1).

The English make a good move, by AI standards, putting four knights where they threaten three of our closely clustered towns in the northwest. We may have to attack them without proper bombardment.

Size-one Reading flips back to the English.

1320 (4): We take Bergen, held by a remaining garrison of one MDI (34-1).

We take Bodo, held by a remaining garrison of two pikemen (36-1).

We take Karasjok, held by two pikemen (38-1).

We dispose of three of the four English knights, but lose an MDI (41-2).

We overrun two Carth units outside Rusaddir (43-2).

We abandon Nottingham and found Orhan.

We can see sea beyond Bergen, so we may have reached the end of the continent to the west.

We abandon Bergen and found Osman.

The fourth English knight attacks Better Than Liverpool, though yellowlined, and perishes (44-2).

1325 (5): We take Rusaddir, held by two Numidians and an MDI (47-2).

We re-take Reading, held by one spearman (48-2).

We winkle out a first pikeman of Copenhagen’s garrison (49-2).

We can see or deduce the locations of all six remaining Viking cities now.

We hack down an English spearman outside Oslo (50-2).

The Sumerians introduce themselves with an offer to sell us Printing Press. They have incense, spices, and a relatively modest nineteen cities. They’re ahead of by as many techs as we can see, of course. We declare war.

The Great Library brings us PP, Education, Astronomy, and Navigation as its final offerings, but not Chemistry, so our decision to research that tech proves correct.

Izmit’s saltpetre source runs out, but we have others.

1330 (6): We storm Copenhagen, held by a remaining garrison of two pikemen and a knight (53-2).

We carve up a first pikeman of Coventry’s garrison (54-2).

We raze Aarhus, held by two pikemen (56-2).

We skewer two Carth MDI outside Shekure (58-2).

We unhorse an English knight outside Frank’s House of Ham (59-2).

We trample a Carth MDI as we approach Sabratha (60-2).

We abandon Rusaddir and Bolu (which is apparently about to be obliterated by a volcano anyway).

We found New Skutari (where we abandoned Skutari), Butterfly, and Stork.

The Byzantines are building Magellan.

The Sumerians complete Bach.

1335 (7): We seize Coventry, held by a remaining garrison of two pikemen (62-2).

We take Hippo, held by two Numidians. We sink at least one galley when we enter the town (65-2).

We spit three Carth units near Shekure (68-2), generating a Great Leader/knight army.

We expunge two English knights near Frank's House of Ham (70-2).

We begin our march on Trondheim, overrunning a Viking MDI en route (71-2).

We abandon Canterbury and found Enishte.

1340 (8): We extirpate a Viking knight on the approach to Trondheim (72-2).

We seize Stavanger, held by two spearmen (74-2).

We storm Sabratha, held by three Numidians, and also batter a Carth MDI in the area (78-2).

We account for another Carth MDI outside Shekure (79-2).

We cut down an English pikeman outside Frank's House of Ham (80-2).

We abandon Hippo and found Olive.

Two English knights attack our stack outside Frank's House of Ham, and the first defeats a pikeman before we overcome the second (81-3).

The English land a knight NE of Leeds, where fortunately the rough terrain will give us time to react.

1345 (9): We ride down the second English knight outside FHoH (82-3).

We defeat a first pikeman of Oxford's garrison, but a terrible RNG run redlines the sword army used, and this attack will have to wait a while (83-3).

We take Theveste, held by two Numidians and an LB (86-3).

We finish off a Carth LB near Shekure (87-3).

We harrow an English spearman outside Copenhagen (88-3).

We abandon Sabratha and found Esther.

1350 (10): We dispose of the English knight landed around Leeds, but it costs us an MDI, since we have no bombardment units in the area (89-4).

We raze Carthago Novo, held by three Numidians (92-4).

We storm Trondheim, held by just four pikemen and an archer (97-4).

We club four Carth units around Shekure, and generate a GL/army (101-4).

We hack down an English knight outside Better Than Liverpool (102-4).

We abandon Theveste.

We found Black and Nusret.

We didn’t get a free city this round, for the first time in a while.

Twenty-one elite victories this round produced two Great Leaders.

The conquest of our continent is in sight, although as usual just crossing the distances involved will take some time yet. The Vikings are on their way out with two cities; the English have seven; and the Carthaginians still have fifteen, but they’re not putting up much of a fight as we wipe out their core.

We don’t really need any more armies to win on our continent, and our enemies aren’t sending enough units to make a lot of elite victories possible, so any new armies we generate should be left empty for Sipahis. :hammer: We have one empty army already, in Woodsy Grove.

Our core is in much better shape now. Izmit, Kafa, and Zonguldak are all at size eleven with temples, and Edrine and Ankara are at size ten. Edrine should have two of its mined grassland tiles irrigated, after which it will be able to work its mined mountain with a merged-in eleventh pop point.

We can keep Viking cities from now on, although it’s possible Trondheim may flip before we eliminate Ragnar, so we’ll need to be careful there.

We won’t be attacking any enemy cities next turn, so the next player will have some time to position the settlers for replacement cities as he likes.

If it becomes obvious that Rusuccuru, Shekure, and Orhan will never need walls, those builds should be changed.

The English have demonstrated a tendency to land near Leeds, and also landed near New Skutari early in the round.

Lack of luxuries is really hampering the growth of our science camps.

The science rate has been cut to zero just until we discover Chemistry this IT.

Looking good, though we will have a lot of open land until we find another continent to attack. I wonder where the Byzantines are. They will be a pain with that many Dromon.

Nice progress. :goodjob:

Since we need to build up our navy so badly, all our corrupt coastal towns working on settlers should switch to caravels. Our corrupt inland towns will yield plenty of settlers eventually.

Our only native settler is fortified under a pikeman SW of Plywood, so the next player should be sure to look for it. There's also a foreign settler in Calaris.

Of course we want to build a lot of knights for upgrading to Sipahis, but it's time to work some of our cheap universities into the build sequence, perhaps starting right now in Istanbul.

The caravel we've sent east has found borders in their colour, although their Dromons haven't been appearing from that direction at all, so perhaps it's a question of an isolated island.

On reflection, it's probably not worth spending the last of our gold just to get to MilTrad three turns earlier. I'd say we should cut the science rate to 40%, after which we'll be running a modest surplus and will have enough cash for twenty knight upgrades to Sipahi when we discover MilTrad.

The reason why I sped up our research is the GA. I think the earlier we get it the better for now. Our empire is pretty big and the GA will be the right time to push unis and get enough sipahis for the first invasion overseas while pushing us towards steam.

While we work on that, we should make sure to get more workers as we soon don't need so many settlers any more.
