Take the city and the English are gone

IBT : We meet the Mayas, Incas, Arabs and declare war.

4) 1420AD : Take Thannae and Hadrumetum

IBT : nothing

5) 1425AD : take Rusguniae

we can settle a city for free

IBT : Hadrumetum deposes us, but we had no units in the city

6) 1430AD : retake Hadrumetum, take Al Kaf

IBT : nothing

7) 1435AD : just moving units

IBT : The Byz land 2 MDIs at New Skutari

8) 1440AD : we get another city for free
generate a leader taking out a Num

We have units at the last 2 Cath cities for taking them next turn

uh, almost forget to clear the Byz landing

IBT : The Byz land a knight at New Skutari

Mil Trad -> Physics

9) 1445AD : take Gades and Souchis and our continent is AI-free

I think it is a good point to hand over to the next one. He can play 11 turns to even out. We have two empty armies. One is almost at our NE shipping point. The second is still in our South. We can upgrade a *knight to a sipahi to join the army and move it to our American shipping point faster. A two knight army is at the American shipping point, so we can put it on a caravel.

I have built a couple of unis with more coming in the next few turns.

Upgrading knights to sipahis cost 90 gold, so maybe we should consider to shut down research for the time being, although I think we do not need any sipahis urgently. France and America are still in the ancient age, so knights should do the job, but the team may decide.

We might want to abandon a few towns and resettle in better places. A few settlers are already in position. Some more on their way.

Unsure on shutting down research, though it may be worth it to slow research long enough to get Sapahi Armies on another continent (with 3 units only of course).

Roster:
Greebley - On Deck
Northern Pike
markh - Just played
ThERat - (swap)
Commando Bob - Up

I'll be travelling, and unavailable to play, from June 17 (Wednesday) to July 20. It looks as though I've timed this perfectly--I'll miss the boring buildup phase and be back when we've returned to full-scale war.

Good work. I'm glad you got so many universities started.

We should get a couple of Sipahis ashore in America (covered by the two-unit knight army) as soon as possible just to trigger our GA. Then we won't have to choose between research and upgrades.

Knights can definitely take casualties attacking AA units, whereas Sips are almost invulnerable, so we shouldn't do any more fighting with knights. The Americans and the French may be primitive, but they'll have obscene numbers of units in the usual way of island civs.

All our corrupt coastal towns producing settlers should still switch to caravels. Our corrupt inland towns can produce enough settlers for present needs.

Istanbul is producing 100-shield Sips at 24 spt, which is irksome. We should short-rush from 72 shields to 80 shields there via the courthouse. How often is there a use for the courthouse build in the capital? :D

In putting down our next science camps, we should settle the available river valleys intensively. This is much more important than just filling land with evenly spaced cities. We can get nine cities onto the great Carthaginian river at CxC, and three more towns onto Trondheim's river.

Got it, but won't have a chance to get prepped until Tuesday.

I thought I posted my preflight notes here on Tuesday. Looks like I just previewed and did not submit.

I'll fix that when I get home.

Plans?
After Physics we can learn Banking, Theory of Gravity or Magnetism. All three are required MA techs. Of the three, I favor Magnetism (new units), then Theory of Gravity and lastly Banking, hoping that the price for Banking will drop while we learn other techs.

We need to populate our landmass. Most of the cities will be science farms. Plus, they will help deter others from settling here.

All of our Caravels are closer to France than America. We can rush three Caravels near America for a bit under 300 gold.

France first or America?

Roughly speaking, our core is about 16 tiles out from Istanbul (Cankiri is right on the border). Anything closer than 16 tiles to Istanbul I'll consider core and work on finishing up the infrastructure (Lib, University, Market, maybe Aquedut/Temple). Once those are built, the city will make units. Anything outside the 16 will be considered breeding ground for geeks, taxmen and settlers.

I don't plan on playing until Friday and then posting sometime on Saturday. Sooner would be better, but tonight is rather iffy.

That sounds fine. Definitely Magnetism next, so we can cover our naval stacks with frigates.

We can probably afford to operate against America and France simultaneously. One shippable army for each should be enough, and Sips covered by those armies will be able to run wild. Of course we'll need to be more careful about the longer voyage to France.

One thing to watch out for is that a civ that entirely owns a landmass will be much more likely to attack armies. Even a lot of small units have been known to kill 2 or 3 army landings. Beware about sending too few units that then can't be defended and are overwhelmed. At least one army should have near full hp for this case.

Saw something that I cannot identify in the game.

What is it?

Any ideas? Lighthouse?

That's the MA version of an outpost or lookout tower, founded by expending a worker.

Fix the cranky cities of Red, Hayrire, Esther and Nusret by hiring geeks.

We're into recycling city names. Ugh.
Too many cities. Double ugh.

Play with workers and slaves.

Wake some Pikes to move towards Vadso and America.

Rush caravels in Haried, Vadso and Trondheim for 264 gold, leaving us at 1229 gold.

Fix Salonika, Zaragoza, Cankiri, Sinop, Santiago, Forthright and Giger.
Resistance in Hadrumetum ends.

Trebs hit 2 of 5 times. We kill one Knight, retreat from two of them and lose an eKnight (1 of 4).

Too many cities.

Physics in 5, -91 gpt, 1065 gold.

Remembered to cycle through the cities and changes coastal settler builds to Caravels. Saw some coastal musket builds and changed those to Caravel also. Left London on Temple.
[IBT]
We lose our Carvel in France to a Frigate, but I could not tell what color (1 of 5).

India pops up and offers Banking for Astronomy and 300 gold.
What? We're not at war?

Check the saves with MapStat. Okay. At the end of 1455 we had not met India, but we had made contact at the start of 1460. I don't how we met. I don't remember seeing a new color on the screen. And I didn't check that tab of MapStat either. I used it (MapStat) to check for cranky cities.

Was just about to trade (got India to lower their price by 5 full gold pieces) but before I made the deal checked the Opening Post of the thread. And there it was in gray and black:
Standard AW: Must declare war as soon as we have contact with no trades, but we can look at our opponents, their techs, etc.

Instead of making a trade, we tar and feather India's traveling salesman and then declare war on India.

Byzantines kill a Pike with their Mace, pillage the grass with their Pike and bravely run-away after attacking a Pike (2 of 7).
And then land reinforcments.

The Byzantine Seven firebomb Friendly again.

Instanbul Sipahi -> Sipahi in 5.
Iznik university -> Musket in 8 (vs. Sipahi in 13).
Aydin university -> Sipahi in 13.

Arabs are building Smith's Trading Company (Economics).

4 1465 AD

Around the Empire
One East of New Bursa is a wounded Byzantine Knight. Southeast of New Skutari is a Crusader (new), redlined Knight, 2 Maces, a wounded and a healthy Pike.

eKnight manhandles the Knight menacing New Bursa. Three trebs in New Skutari hit twice, on the Crusader and healthy Pike. Three open field trebs move into New Skutari, along with an eSpear. vKnight has no problem with the wounded Crusader (4 of 9).
Two wounded Knights heal in New Skutari and two vSwords reinforce the city.

Too many cities.

India has no tiles visible.

Start naming the settlers that are ready to build where they stand. Name them 'Build01', 'Build02' and such.

Physics in 4, -98 gpt, 975 gold.
[IBT]
The save is attached.

I've got to handoff early due to a family crisis; medical situation with my mother-in-law, who may not wake up tomorrow.

Didn't get much done.

Three Caravels (Yank01, Yank02 and Yank03) are loaded up and ready to sail to America. One Small Army and 6 Pikes, with a lot of Knights to follow.

The French force (Frog01 to Frog06, but not all got named) is waiting for Sipahi. Nothing has been loaded.

We have one Sipahi, near the French loading zone.

Since we got the 'Too many cities' message each turn, I started naming some settlers that I thought were in good positions. Those I named 'Build01' but only three or four of them named this last turn, when I thought about naming them.

We have a small stack of Byzantine units outside New Skutari.

We've met India, but I don't know how.

looking over the position, I am worried about trying to attack both France and America. With only one Army if the AI attacks we will lose all our units. What do you all feel about taking on America only first? We don't have to risk our units at sea.

Downside is I have to move units all the way across the continent.

I was also going to do some upgrades like was discussed - I would put science at 40% for physics a turn later.

Opinions?

Sure--this is a strong position and we don't have to try to do too much. Just attack America if that's what your instincts suggest.

I think delaying research a bit for upgrades is fine.

CB, thanks for getting those turns played, and I hope your family situation works out. :(

Preturn Upgrade a few units. Moving west to go for America. Look at landing mentioned and move some knights toward it.

IBT: PIke and Spear killed by landing. Another ship coming.

1470 AD: Lose a Knight attacking a 1hp Pike which goes to 2 hp. We kill the other Pike, then a Sword attacking 1 hp MDI also loses and and the MDI goes 2 hp. Knight attacks it and also loses putting the MDI back to 1 HP. Swordsman kills the MDI. Elite Knight attacks last MDI and we get a Leader!

Abandon some of the useless corrupt hill cities to form some in the Grasslands.

The settlers don't seem to be where we want them most. Since the towns will all be corrupt we want to settle the grasslands first. Those that are in grasslands are already in crowded areas with big open areas not yet filled. It is true these areas don't have rivers, but they still generate more scientists with us having no rails. Of course these locations are farther away so it may just be that we havn't gotten settlers there yet, but I don't want to settle Plains while the Grasslands are still free.

IBT: Very big landing between new Skutari and Santiago. Hard to cover both.

1475 AD: Not enough units to attack landing but only knights can get to us. I defend.

IBT: Knights attack and die. Some other Knights land.

1480 AD: Kill the Knights. Other units are on a hill so I wait.

IBT: Another landing of Knights.

1485 AD: Kill the original landing with Armies. Kill the Knights First Sapahi Victory and our Golden age beginds

1490 AD: Kill a small landing. Land on American continent

1495 AD: Kill some Spear in Boston. Land more troops.

1500 AD: Boston is Captured this allows me to move troops off the boat and attack Washington.

Notes:
No recent landings.

Near resilience is an empty Army that has been moving my whole turn toward a Sapahi. There is one two squares away. Make sure you don't move the Sapahi off. This army might be better heading toward France. We have enough in America.

We have boats on our coast nearest France but no Army yet.

The Americans get next move and may move a lot of units our way. Depending on how many, it might be better to ignore them and simply defend while we go after cities. This of course doesn't work if it puts our city/armies at risk. There are 3 armies over there.

Mil Academy is building in Capitol.

Sounds good. :goodjob:

No doubt we could just take the Americans' remaining cities and leave a lot of their units to come off the map when they're eliminated, but OTOH grinding down their stacks outside cities should provide as easy an opportunity as we'll ever have to gain Sipahi promotions to elite and Great Leaders.
