Gr8 Team B The Pheonix Rising

I'm very sorry for flaking out, but I'm going to have to drop all my SGs for a while. I'm just swamped -- three major time-eaters hit me at once, and I only knew about one of them ahead of time. I simply can't get two hours free in a row where I'm not already exhausted.

Again, I'm very sorry. If you're still playing in five or six weeks and you can stand to have me back, I'll be here.

Preturn

We have to find the other continent.
Switch some coastal cities to galleys.
Also our military is pretty weak, it is dangerous state.

IT

Mayans and greeks exchange friendly whacking.

660 AD (1)

Uncorrupt cities continue build markets and libs, some horsemen are ordered too.
Switch Munich from aqueduct to cathedral (it won't grow past size 6 till RR)

670 AD (2)

Set research to 50% -> still get Education in 2 turns
Send suicide galley west

IT

See greek cavalry :eek:
suicide galley sinks

680 AD (3)

690 AD (4)

We get Education, start Astronomy (England and Maya don't have Astronomy and Banking) at 70% (9 turns)
Build Fish Point

IT

Another galley sinks

700 AD (5)

Start Universities in the core cities
This lake is supposed to be fresh water, am I missing something?

710 AD (6)

Some unis are finished --> astronomy in 6 turns :)

720 AD (7)

Lizzy gets Astronomy, arghh.

Summary: anyway, we are doing pretty well. We need some more improved military and contacts with other continent.

Re: the "lake" -- it's exactly one tile too large to be fresh water. I counted a while back. :)

Turn 0, 750AD: Can buy Astro for about 35 gpt, or research it for about 350 beakers. I'll research and hope Lizzy doesn't sell it. Order up some more galleys as we really need to get out more. Empire's looking good. We're more powerful than England or Maya, if the nexttrading round comes to nothing I'll try to beat up England, to get Silks and perhaps a tech. England has pikes.

IT: apparently we were trading for silks with England, and giving iron and dyes for it - missed that. Cancel the deal, England will not renew anyway, and scroll through to prevent riots.

Turn 1, 760AD: Our galley spots a red border, but we need to survive another turn in the ocean. turn sci down.

IT: Astro -> Press. Greece doesn't have it yet.

Turn 2, 770AD: Our galley survived and reaches Babylon!
PhoenixB_770AD_Babylon.jpg

Hammi is similar to England in techs, so time for some trading:
Maya: Music Theory + 3 gold <-> Astro + 20 gpt + Dyes.
Babylon: Feudalism <-> Astro + Music + 4 gpt.

Open an embassy in Babylon for 72 gold:
PhoenixB_770AD_BabylonEmbassy.jpg

England unfortunately doesn't value Music much and will give only Silks for it. We then also meet Sumeria, but they apparently already have all the techs we have:
PhoenixB_770AD_Sumeria.jpg

I guess I should have moved the galley before trading - oh well.
Let's postpone wars for the moment, our army is too small still. So
England: Silks + 5 <-> Music.
Everyone is now up Chivalry, Engineering and Monarchy. Greece is also up Banking and Navigation, and is the only one in the IA. science to 70%, lux to 10%, for Press in 5.

IT: two palace expansions.

Turn 3, 780AD: zzz

Turn 4, 790AD: sci 60%. Continue building infra and ships.

Turn 5, 800AD: sci 50%.

Turn 6, 810AD: sci 30%. courts, markets, libs finish, but not much else happens.

IT: Press -> Banking.

Turn 7, 820AD: Our galley in the west reaches the border of Sumer. Press is a monopoly, and we have an interesting round of trading. All civs we know have Engineering and Chivalry. The civs from our island do not know Sumer or Babylon. Greece knows Aztecs, Chinese, French and Japanese, has Banking and Navigation, and 747 gold and at least 50 gpt. Maya knows Fench and Japanese, has Navigation, and 83 gold and at least 50 gpt. England has nothing. Sumer knows Aztecs, Chinese and Japanese, and has no gold. Babylon knows Aztecs and Persians, and has no gold. So buying contacts from the backwards civs:
Babylon: contact with Aztecs and Persians + Engineering + 9 gold <-> Press
Aztecs know Chinese and Japanese, have Banking and Navigation, and 55 gold and about 25 gpt.
Persia still lacks Education, so
Persia: contact with Japan + Chivalry <-> Education + 51 gold.
Japan knows China, has Banking and Navigation, and close to 300 gold and about 15 gpt.
Maya: contact with France + 5 gpt + 68 <-> horses.
France is still in the AA, we sell her Writing and Construction for Monarchy, just for fun.
Sumer: contact w China <-> 196.
China seems to offer banking at the lowest price, so
China: Banking + 22 <-> Press + contact w Baylon and France
Maya: Navigation + 14 gpt + 9 <-> Banking
Persia: WM + Invention + 73 (all they have) <-> Astro
Persia: Gunpowder <-> Banking
France: WM <-> HBR

China, Greece and Japan have Chemistry, but it's way too expensive yet. So I'll just get maps, luxes and gold:
Babylon: Wines + Ivory + WM (all they have) <-> Banking
Maya: 72 gpt + 6 + WM (all they have) <-> Press
Greece: 639 <-> Press
Aztecs: 26 gpt + 55 + WM (all they have) <-> Press
Japan: 16 gpt + 296 + WM (all they have, except for Chemistry) <-> Press
Sumer: 202 + WM (all they have) <-> Press
China: 8 gpt + 24 <-> contact w Maya, England, Persia
England: WM + 7 <-> WM
Greece: WM + 97 + 1 gpt <-> WM + Contact w Bab, Sum, Per.
China: WM + 2 gpt + 4 <-> WM
Greece: 7 <-> WM.

We have 2 sources of saltpeter, one near England and one well inside our borders. We now have practically all gold, 2 extra luxes, tech parity with all except Japan, China, Greece, and a full WM:
PhoenixB_820AD_WM.jpg

Set research to Democracy in 6 turns at 100%, maybe we get some trade value out of it. Switch a few builds to banks.

IT: Our caravel kills a Greek pirate.

Turn 8, 830AD: New Stuttgart founded.

IT: another palace expansion. Shanghai finishes Newton.

Turn 9, 840AD: zzz

Turn 10, 850AD: New Bonn founded.

notes:
- I think we should try to trade up to the IA using democracy and one or two other optional techs (perhaps Economics, Free Artistry), that we'll hopefully get as monopoly. Once in the IA it should be not too hard to control the game.
- I've started some forestry operations in corrupt zones to make some shields. CivAssist will show which forests can be chopped.
- Feel free to change builds as you think fit. In particular, we could ocnsider trying to get Smiths, Economics is not known yet.

lux is at 0% :). With that setting, we could well be the strongest researcher already, I am really disappointed in the research progress made by the AI :D.

Let's target civs with luxes, preferably weak ones. Greece is a big boy, and has rifles, so maybe they can wait until we get tanks and/or planes. I would attack England first, with cavalry or even knights/MDI. They are weak and have a lux. We get it in a trade for another 12 turns or so, it would be good to strike when it expires.

After that, maybe some overseas weakling with luxes. I think Babylon is not very strong, or maybe France has some lux? Maya, Persia and Sumer also look weak.

I guess your turnset would see only the preparation of an attack, we have ongoing deals with many civs.

lux is at 0%

Excellent :)

Tanks sound good, 7+1 proved that no AI on any difficulty of any size can stand in the way of humans with tanks. Their leader fishing blitz ability is great, but I think attacking earlier with cav may be more effective. Even infantry in metros fear the cav army even without artillery support.

Official got it, have to leave in 15 minutes, will see what I can do, but will finish tomorrow :( .

Excellent turns! :goodjob:

Cavs and cannons would be enough to shred Greece, although it might be fun to save our pent up aggression for Panzers and see how quickly we can conquer the world.

Great news, zyxy :)

I think we shouldn't have problems claiming our continent with cav armies.
But waiting till tanks can work too.

Thanks all! Of course Leha deserves part of the credit for initiating the succesful suicide run to Babylon :). Printing Press is an often overlooked, but rather useful tech.

Cav armies vs rifles may work, but still risks losses. My experience with them isn't that positive, but YMMV. Ordinary cavs need arty support or it's going to be a bloodbath. I would definitely like to play with panzers, but of course if we think we can take Greece without them, then let's do so.

I assume our preferred win condition is domination or conquest?

Considering our luck with resourses until now I'm afraid we won't get oil, and then fighting for oil with cavs against infantry can be really painful.
Let's see if we get coal first.

Edit: Ah, too much AW SG's, of course we can TRADE oil.
