Guess the New Civs

Never knew or studied the Huns until that TV movie with Gerard Butler came out on USA. Then we studied world history freshman year and he was briefly mentioned at the end of Rome.

This is the gist of why the Huns are in and the Khazars aren't.
Let's remember that in the end, the guys at Firaxis are businessmen, not Historians or Anthropologists.

And thats how we end up with ridiculous city names like "Mumbles" for England and and god knows what for the Huns (Atilla's court has some historical basis but there really won't be for the rest of its cities).

Yep they aren't historians, but I wish maybe they could do something like hold fan related votes for civs/DLC Civs to choose a civ or two that the community may have interest about that the Developers may be unaware of.

I thought everyone knew of Atilla the Hun? ;)

You know how they might become aware of that?

Having a petition thread asking for the next dlc civs to be voted for by fansites signed by lots of forum goers.

Hannibal wouldn't have been the first mounted leader in the game - we already have Alex and Napoleon, neither of which AFAIK conducted diplomacy from horseback. An elephant would have made a nice change. I'm more than happy with the choice of Dido, though.
And Genghis Khan.
And I'm with you that leaders shouldn't be in such odd places when conducting diplomacy (did Oda Nobunaga really conduct diplomacy in the middle of a deserted field? Did Askia really make research agreements while holding a gigantic sword and standing in front of a burning building?) It's not really a big deal, but I have wondered...

I never said it didn't make sense. I was just pointing out a precedent for the use of Gothic for the Huns.

Actually that might work. Much better than the other alternatives

Sorry, I think I missed the beginning of the line of conversation. I wouldn't be opposed to that either. It would make more sense than Magyar.

Yeah, Hungarian language certainly wouldn't work for the Huns at all

Please give it a rest with the Khazars.

We all know the Huns will be in, we are just both speculating/lamenting at the same time. The Khazars would have been more fun I think but the Huns can be fun too.

Its just I feel like I (and sounds like others too) are much more aprehensive what the Huns can be in this game.

Correction: The guys at 2K are businessmen.

I'm curious as to whether 2K or Firaxis decides which civs are added.
I'm quite sure they read many of our threads. There have been things added before that were suggested here. Be positive and give good reasons, they may be reading and might even listen. :)

Firaxis are entertainers (in the sense that they program something designed to entertain). So they're still not historians. 2K might have general things they might want to attract a wider audience, but it's still Firaxis's game.

Just had a thought that I thought might be worth sharing.

We know there are "a set of three civs" - the Celts, the Huns and the Byzantines - that led to the design of the Fall of Rome scenario.
There are three new scenarios. What if all the new civs were in these scenarios? We might get this:

Fall of Rome
Celts
Huns
Byzantines
Carthage
Khazars?
Medieval scenario
Byzantines
Dutch
Mayans
Ethiopia?
Austria?
Poland?
Magyars/Hungary?

Empire of the Smoky Skies
Dutch
Zulu?
Austria?
Brazil?
Kongo?

These, out of the main suggested new civs, would fit into the scenarios we know exist. For this reason, I am starting to doubt the Hittites or Sumer will be in. They simply don't fit.

So, we know that there are:
Celts
Byzantines
Carthage
Dutch
Mayans

And can be fairly certain that there is also:
Huns

Hmmm... From what they've done in the past I'd have a guess at:
Zulu
Ethiopia
Sumeria or similar

But who knows... They could go quite left of field.

I think most new civs are scenario related. My predictions:

Fall of Rome:
Byzantium
Huns
Celts

Medieval
Netherlands
Poland
Sweden

+
Carthage
Maya

I was also thinking about this, and they do not fit in the scenarios at all, that's for sure
I still think one of them will be in GK though, as IMO both Sumeria and the Hittites will be released eventually, and probably not all 9 civs will be scenario related
Ethiopia also has a high probability in my eyes, while they don't have any real connection with the scenarios

Medieval
Netherlands
Poland
Sweden

Sweden was pretty much Denmark's <snip> during the middle ages, they weren't really significant until the thirty years war, plus that I feel Sweden might be a bit too close culturally and geographically to Denmark to be released at this time, I'd like them later but would rather have more interesting non-european civs take the last three places available.

Poland might be a good choice. They were a real power once
and are from Eastern Europe a area long neglected.
They might say the heck with it and make the Huns
Hungarian too.
