Guide to NESing!

Generation: First
NESes run: >11
Favored type: Fresh Start, Historical, Althistorical, Modern, Random
Disfavored type: Fantasy, Science Fiction, Other (under "Other" I mean things like that Gnome NES and other such "inconventional" NESes)
Animosity to (this is rather comparative): Xen, fantasmo, NK (unless he finishes writing the history for his NES soon, in which case he will be immediately moved to the top of the approving list)
Approves of: pretty much everybody

Those are really common tactics, you can get them in any infantry manual or military history book. I guess I shouldn't have saved some people the work, though, although that is what this guide is all about...

It seems like a lot of people have animosity towards fantasmo. Is this because of that time where he spent his nation's eco on being sexy?

ahh, i'm on the same list as das, stalin and sheep. all superb nesers :D, you must think highly of me

some of us actually think some ppl should work to get good results instead of just copying it from a guide.

Nah, it's that he loves doing really random things. For example in goober's nes he had tons of anthrax stored in civilian warehouses and then attacked ceylon owned by India and part of the greatest alliance in the world. When the alliance attacked, all the anthrax warehouses were destroyed, and most of his people died because of him...

There is a stickied post about this already, but a grand idea. You know wehere to find me if you need help with this.

if you dont mind, das, i will add a little to your history in just a second. after all, you missed the middle part of the NES age, lol.

And I will come up with some different generations, lol. Generations seem to be based around certain monumental NES's, and (though I have been left out for the past couple months), I should be able to come up with some for the past.

I will write it now.

btw, xen was in stjnes5. quite a while ago.

Want to ask you a couple of things:

What is a board NES and how is it different from just a stat based NES such as Warmans Red Alert NES? I need a more or less competent person to answer.

Do you think I should give links to CFC threads for people to see them themselves? Or would that be bad for CFC or too CFC-centered?

Also:
Please if you have time DO write some cool and interesting stories for newbies to read. On a number of occasions little perks and mistakes in orders lead to a conflict situation that was solved with humour and interest from both sides. Please write or cut and paste stories that involve you to show how much fun NESing is.
I need: NES name, who's playing who and what is "the world situation before the story" and of course the actual story.

For example:

North King's Ruins of Empire's NES(Fresh start), Gelion(Novgorod), das (Khazaria) - situated around the mouth of Volga river compete over control of Ukraine and Russia. Khazaria sends a "scout party" to make contact with Novgorodians and sign peace. This party consisted of around 500 mean, heavily armed. A mistake? Novgorod was not to know. Novgorodian border guards and the "scout party" battled on the border of Novgorod. Both parties suffered heavy losses. A war was imminent, but both kings decided to give peace a little hope.

There was a certain strain of oddity in the air as the Khazarians marched into land they thought was barbarian. They were no long quite sure that whoever they were marching to meet was barbarian. The people seemed well fed and quite happy, they maintained vast fields of oats, and had many towns, which, while nothing truly massive, were quite plentiful. It was too... civilized. The general was confused a bit by this, but he knew his orders. He was to proceed to this “New City”, wherever it was. To establish contact. But now he found his way blocked. Blocked by a Novgorodian army.

The Khazars were far outnumbered, admittedly. But the general was intelligent. He knew how to fight a battle. As the Novgorodian armies came forth he readied his men and they fired arrows down upon the veritable horde of Slavic warriors. His cavalry murdered Novgorod’s. But in the end, the Slavs were too strong. The “fist” of their central infantry wing broke clean through the Khazars’ army, and the latter withdrew from the field.
Casualties: Khazars: 100 UU, 200 swordsmen, 100 spearmen, Novgorod: 200 spearmen, 300 UU

The Novgorod army celebrated their victory, but they are not done yet; Khazars still occupy portions of the countryside. Meanwhile, a trade route with Tartessos dies upon arrival. The two nations are too separated to trade at the moment.

Khazaria:
A few months after the embassy expedition set out, a frightened messanger arrived in Itil. Khagan David received him. The messanger spoke of something... unbelievable. Novgorod was not an isolated city state in the far north as originally believed. No. It was an empire as big as Khazaria. The lands to the north were civilized. Their natives could work metals as well. They lived in towns, small and large. And General Ioseph decided to take battle, but to stop the advance for now. The messanger asked the Khagan - what shall we do? The Khagan just sat there, thoughtful. It was to be the final confrontation.

The nobles denounced all thoughts of the Slavs being civilized. And even if they were, the would-be Begs wanted war, fame and glory. The Khagan did not like retreating from a fight. But he also did not like the nobles gaining influence and power. That expedition was ordered by him to establish contact. It suceeded.

But Ioseph and his men were slaughtered, somewhere in the north, on the "Hazarskoye Pole" as the Slavs would would call it. The citizens wanted revenge.

It was tough decision. Finally, the Khagan made his decision.

---

Another messanger was riding through the Novgorodian Slavic lands. Ignoring the cold wind, he tried to reach Novgorod. If he was to suceed, he was sure, his name would go down in history. Or, at least, his deeds will.

Diplo:

From: Khazaria
To: Novgorod

We are sorry for our accidental incursion into your lands. We were not aware that it already belonged to you. However, we do not see much logical reasoning for your attack on our embassadorial mission.

However, I am willing to understand that both sides made mistake. Let it not be repeated. We suggest peace on current borders.

Before you say that this is not acceptable - we have some reasons to believe that at least some of those lands were yours - , let me point out that those lands are worthless to you. If we keep these lands (or, maybe, ONE HALF of these lands), both sides will be able to claim victory, and thus neither side will want to take revenge in the future. In compensation to you, we will grant you one economy level. Acceptable?

Novgorod:
Novgorodian council collected for the meeting. It was an unusual day in a worrying time. Elders from the city of Novgorod and other cities entered the hall. The hall was built by the King Fearon just after he became the ruler of Novgorod. Priests, civilian grandees and generals all had equal number of seats in the hall. The hall was of of a rectagular shape with seats along the walls and decorated with the finest items of Novgorodian crafts and overseas gifts. Today, as it was anticipated, the warriors were sitting closer to the King. Airell the II entered in complete silence. He sat down and so did his grandees. Everyone knew whats on the agenda today. "Vvedite grajdanina posla" said the king ("let the ambassador enter").

Tall and proud he entered a true son ofthe south and of his nation. He opened up a scroll and read:
"We are sorry for our accidental incursion into your lands.

Acceptable?"

King Airell stood up when the ambassador finished talking. "You speak of victory and yet claim the was no war between out people. We will discuss your message. Rest now, you will get your answer tomorrow. Guards! Take him to his appartments!" and the mabassador left.

Airell called one of the seniour guards and told him: "give him everything he needs, let
him remeber Novgorodian hospitality. But make sure to make one of your men a "guide" that takes care of him. I want him to have a nice time here, but I don't want him getting into trouble nor creating any." "Will do sire".

Then Emrys - one of the senior generals stood up.
"Sire, I was there after the battle took place. Our men are brave, but Khazarians are a strong nation. Strong is their cavalry of which there are many. So I was told. They talk of a misunderstanding. They would wouldn't they? I can hardy believe they went on an ambasadorial mission with several hundren armed men. In my book this is a start of a war. The question in my view is in how we will fight this war and how to buy time. I propose that we ask our allies in the south to join us. They have a lot to gain from this war."

"Your words are true Emrys. No nation that we know of ever sends ambassadors with hundreds of armed men. But that may be thier tradition. What say you Brannus? You were in charge of my men."

"It was indeed a wise descision to send an amry to protect our South. That gang never showed any signs of wanting to stop. We saw them, told them to stop. They did. We asked them why they are on our land. They said they are on a diplomatic mission to our capital. We told the ambassadors can go through, but armed men cannot. They said "we have orders". We said "so do we". They asked "will you let us through?". We said "not with your arms". Then their general said that he was sorry and the battle begun. OUr footmen fight better than them, but their cavalry is beyond ours. We need to train mounted archers if we want to win the plains sire."

"Curious. They follow orders to the point where the whole idea behind them dissapears. Very curious. I think I'm beginning to understand our southern neighbours. They still occupy our land in the south?"

"Yes sire."

"In this case I ask those who spoke today and Britts, Floyd and Artur to stay here. The rest are dismissed for today."

BIG PAUSE enough to get Khazaria worried.... ;)

Novgorodian council once again collected for the meeting. Second day of the period that later will be called "the period of choice". Once again the Khazarian ambassador entered the hall. Faces of grandees were still frowning, but without any sign of hate or revengefullness.

The King stood up from his throne: "We have prepared this massage for your king. You shall take it to him as soon as you are ready to leave. We will provide you with horses, warm clothing and guards so that you won't face the same hardships you did on the way here. Guards shall leave you close to the territory your forces now occupy. Give your King this message and tell him this: "We, as Khazarians, value our word. Hear our message. Where we go from here we leave to you."". The ambassador bowed, left the hall, and was gone from the capital within 10 minutes. In his hand was the faith of both nations, but which faith?.

Message from King Airell of Novgorod to the honorable King of Khazaria
"Greetings an honrable King of Khazaria!

I spend some time with your ambassador, a really pleasant young man. It was very brave of him to deliver your message through uncalculabe dangers. He told me a lot about your lands. About your fight with Scytians. Your religion which I find very similar to ours. He never mentioned any tradition on sending ambassadors with several hundred armed men. I'm glad your second attempt was more succesfull than the first one.

We were thinking very deeply about the accident in our Southern Lands. I realise that all our men were acting on orders they dared not break. So I consider that this battle was just a tragic incident. We have a saying "best friends are born, battling one another". I have some men with me wanting revenge. If I understand humans correctly so do you. We both know what dangers war brings. The mighties empires fall and new nations are born in war. Let us not claim victories. Let us fight the spirit of war burning in our soldiers. I honor war, but I know peace brings better fruits.

I have read your message and I feel it would serve both our nations a better deal if we agree on the following:
- Both our nations stay in current borders (OOC: you withdraw from my land). Novgorod will not cease any lands to someone we will consider a friend. Friends are friends. If one gives something to the other - he's a vassal. Novgorod and Khazaria are strong enough not to be vassals.
- Novgorod recognises your current lands even though a large proportion of your population are Slavs. Khazaria recognises Novgorodian lands.
- We are too cloose to each other not to benefit from mutual trade. Novgorod, as a trade center of the whole region, not just my Kingdom, has a lot to offer. We feel if we are friends this will be good for both of our nations.

I also think that our nations could fight their wars together. I believe that together we have the best infantry and cavalry in the world. Why not one hand help the other?

In conclusion I'd like to share with you a small legend from our past. Once a tribe leader called men of another tribe to come and help him claim the "throne" of his brother. There was a civil war in that tribe. The Graecians came. They fought, they won. But the leader who called them died from his brothers hand and now all the tribe was united under him. He said: "lay down your weapons and you will not be harmed." The Graecians replied "If you are our friend we will help you with weapons in hand, if you are a foe we will help ourselves with weapons in hand". Novgorodians honour their word and want peace, but peace is peace all the way. So is war.

With best wishes,
King of Novgorodians,
Airell"

And thus the war was avoided.... and both nations began a long a peacefull history of cooperation....

I hop eyo get the picture of what I want from you. Please make it shorter than what I did (I will cut it obviously). In this part of the guide we get to show off our NESing skills. You can add some OOC stuff like "at this time I thought" or "I already had a secret pact with AAA so I had to act like this, hence this story"....

anyway I do hope you will add something and this guide does not come out "empty" ;) or full of my stories :p

guide taken out cuz I might forget to cut it later.... it was only a draft after all... :crazyeye:
