Guide to NESing!

LOL, how many people I forgot... HOW COULD I FORGET SAVAG?!

But, Constantine and Norseone aren't really gone, IMHO. I am sure I saw them on this forum not too long ago...

NK, I am quite sure Xen joined in late stJNES9. And I think you were there before.

Meh. You haven't had a full-length sig flaming me, or written consistently unintelligible posts, or anything of the sort. Setbacks from moderators are not really a problem in the long term.

ME PEOPLE ME...ive only been here 2 1/2 years and modded nearl 10 nes' altogether (counting apolyton)

I'm not really qualified to post much of anything here, only having been an NESer for about two months. However, I think that this would be incredibly helpful to n00bs like me. I had to try and get the order format from Panda the first time through (Sheep's Cold War NES), and that was sort of helpful. Then I had to learn how not to put OOC comments in IC posts. That hasn't fully happened yet.

I guess I'm trying to say that any sort of basic guide for first-time NESers would help avoid some dumb stuff we do, and make everything a little more enjoyable. I fully support this project and can help if you need something.

Xen was there long before 9. Perhaps you mean 5? In any case, Xen joined 5 aroudn the same time I joined Kamilian's... Good times (actually quite bad in my particular case, but oh well)...

Dachspmg I will take it into consideration :)

NESing Dictionary:
NESers use their own vocabulary. You are of course free to make your own, but this list will help you understand the many examples and terms of CFC NESes.

OOC – Out Of Character. Used by mods or player to say something that is not an “official” statement.
IC – In Character. You use “IC” to say something that is meant to be “official”. IC is normally used in contrast with OOC when both appear in the same post. If “OOC” “tag” is not there there’s normally need to post “IC” as all messages are treated to be “IC”. Sometimes “IN” is used instead of “IC”.
Example:
Goobs NES, Thread 2,p. 16, Stormbringer (Russian Federation):
OOC: thank you Goober, I am proud of that story
IN:
Putin was very excited as he welcomed the arriving delegations in Shanghai, "Please come in my friends. Please. Together we will build a new future for this world." Here is where we are meeting: [thread adress]

Update, Orders and Mod – are self explanatory really :)
PC – “Playing Characters” - players
NPC – Non Playing Characters
MMP – Mutual Protection Pact
NAP Non-Aggression Treaty

DO I NEED TO ADD MORE TERMS?

Hmm... I could do a dictionary of NESer name-based terms (as in, "to hellfish" - to post songs or poetry not of your own making as a story).

That can be seen as very CFC related. We are already making a lot of stuff to boast our personal contribution to this. I mean it is important, but I want to separate that from the actual game concept. Any actual terms you can think of?

most of those were crap though

Actually, they were great. Except they all died on turn 3. But, then again, Azale already broke that trend in his current one...

emu is just plain nasty

his early ones were good but then he trailed off towards the middle, then you have the good one now

Any more comments on my file, or anyone want to make their own?

I'd be willing the write about all the usage of WMD possible the various types of WMD and killer viruses you can create and how to infiltrate and detonate WMD in other countries, when to use WMD etc....

See previous page, emu.

silver2039, please do. "A Guide to WMDs in NESing"

A short (will be expanded) guide to that bloodiest of activities in NESing.

"The acme of skill is to win a war without fighting" --Sun Tzu

This particular piece will focus on story NESes, this is mainly because war is fairly easy to perform in a board "NES", and also that I have little taste for board "NESes"; if anyone wishes to add a section on board "NESes", then go ahead.

Now, onto war.

When to War

"He who knows his enemy and himself will be victorious all the time." --Sun Tzu

War can happen in many instances; you might be attacked, you might attack. Judging when to attack and how to attack is a thing that requires often more instinct than skill, but a few factors can be evaluated.

The idea is mostly to make sure that you are capable of beating your opponent. This doesn't always require numerical strength, of course, but usually that is helpful. The main things to consider (in my humble opinion) are:

I. Why are you fighting?
Asess your opponent and their strengths. Determine your long term goals: what you want to gain from a war.

II. How best can you gain this?
Figure out, usually through intuition, how to fight them best. If you're aiming to gain an opponent's industries, then, by all means, you shouldn't really be bombing them. Likewise, in a land war versus the Netherlands, blowing up the dykes is not advisable.

Another thing to do is determine where best to attack. Obvious things should come into play here. If your opponent is fighting a war on the other side of the empire, then you might be able to get away with a frontal attack; however, it is much preferable to attempt to attack them where they won't expect, defend, or be able to reinforce.

III. This is definately included in I. (see above), but it is important enough to merit its own section. Determine who might help your opponent, and plan for their entry. While you can try to get allies, don't trust them to do your fighting for them. That usually spells distaster.

How to attack

"It is best to attack his alliances. --Sun Tzu"

As Sun Tzu would tell you, attacking the enemy himself involves attack all of his assets, beginning with his alliances.

Before going to war, do your best to divide all your opponent's allies. Plant incidents between them, make them suspect each other. If some of them look like they are on the edge, perhaps approach them secretly, preferably via PM or an IM service, to try and get them onto your side (but be VERY careful here).

Once you are on the eve of war, formulate your war plans. Most of the time, like when you've started this war yourself, you should already have a plan in mind. Other times, you may be attacked, and will have to get one on the spot.

Basically, when you send the moderator your orders, try your best to outmanuever the enemy into a position which is disadvantageous to them. This can be done by secret marches, by drawing them into your territory by being passive, or by luring them with what seems a bigger prize than the risk.

That's the bare basics. You will learn as you gain experience, and you will have to use instincts. But one last lesson...

Realize when you're beaten, when you have no hope of winning. Then, not before or after, try to work out the best peace you can.

you actually think about all those things before fighting a war? and all those things while fighting a war?
