GuideNES: The First Step for Lurkers and Newbies!

Technically, you're in the north and he's in the south (well, sort of; the Peloponnese is mostly south of Attica, but Patras actually seems to be on the same level if not further north. Darn bloody confusing peninsulas...). Still, it could indeed work out well.

Yeah the peninsulas are confusing. I just looked at his description and assumed he was in the north.

Mmmm I do find this slightly patronising. I'm sure us from Forum Games don't need a tutor, just someone to help out occasionally and give suggestions.

It's good help. I wish I had had a tutor or someone to advise me during my early forays. Although I did eventually learn by myself, having an adviser is like an enzyme - it lowers the activation energy for people to truly blossom. :)

What seems to happen with people is they start off bad, on average, then one day something changes and they improve drastically. Like Charles Li is much better now, not like it is amazing, but certainly much better than before.

What exactly is so wrong about being "patronising"? We are your patrons, in the ancient sense of the word. We will patronise you so that you will have the right to patronise those that come after you. ;)

That said, MjM is wrong, but for different reasons - we are indeed advisers, not tutors. Still, it would be best if people were to stop complaining about such trivialities, especially if the only qualm they have is that it is "patronising". Thank you.

3. Roman slave master: in ancient Rome, somebody who had given a slave his or her freedom but still retained some rights over the former slave

My biggest complaint in my botched attempt at moderating was the lack of orders organization (or is it just me not liking seeing blocks of paragraph without real order?). We must have examples from the orders thread of well-ordered orders, IMHO.

My orders use to be messy until I saw and started copying the way Symphony organized his, I do it differently now with similar organization.

Not what I meant, but that works too. :p

I'll happily be a mentor/advisor for anyone. BTW, I take it that there aren't any non-European starts, so Teotihuacan might have to move.

No, no, let Teotihuacan stay there. If it diverges from the sacrificing annd hunter-gatherer ways of the peoples there and establish a culture that can create a Europe-esque or China-esque zone, the player has to do so through good story-telling.

I (and several other NESers) do too. Although some people might need tutors, most don't. Those who do need tutors can just use famous NESers like EQ, das, etc. But oh well: maybe this will work and it'll be successful in throughly educating the next generation of NESers... I just hope that people who use this NES to join NESing don't become dependent on tutors and advice from others. Btw, NESers I see on AIM a lot and that could give pretty good advice: Lucky (on ~5 hrs per day ~6-7 EST), EQ (on ~2 hrs per day ~7-8 EST), me (on ~6-10 hrs a day [high school is so boring] ~5-6 EST), crezth (on ~2 hrs per day ~9 EST).

But it's just not ethnically possible for it [Teotihuacan] to appear in Europe...

I think I reserved the right to be the only person in the Americas in the other thread. Like I said, I could even do my own updates if the mods want me to.

@flyingchicken: I feel like having an argument about westerncentrism, so:
Hunter-gathering? WTH? Teotihuacan was the largest city of its time, even larger than Rome! That's like saying that Mali was one of the poorest countries on earth and was destroyed because of it's backwardness... And what about sacrificing? Back then, it was only done to celebrate the construction of a new temple or things like that (unlike in Aztec times). Pretty much just like the way Jews would sacrifice thousands of sheep every year at Passover, except that only 1 (or few) person(s) was(were) sacrificed.

Good Luck, I will be lurking to see if you welcome other NESers with the grace you have offered me, Abaddon.

Everyone please!

There is no patronisation nor assumption that you NEED an Advisor.

We are simply creating the environment where there IS one should you WANT one.

Let the off-topic trend be re-directed back to the development thread.

@ Qoou ~ Sorry buddy, but you HAVE to move to Europe. The whole point of this NES is to teach interaction, trade and warfare with other players. If your stranded over there it makes no sense. It also vastly increases the amount of work a Mod has to do. Please, pick a culture that can be placed on the map I provided. (Your suggestion of Moding it yourself makes no sense at all!)

@ The Various Greece Nations ~ All bunched together will be very good as it means less time will have to pass before contact is made and your nations can interact. :)

Holy bajeesus, this has way more interest than I ever expected! Allow me to address some of the issues...

1. On the issue of tutors/advisers; you do not NEED to have an adviser, but if you do request one, hopefully there'll be enough to go around. I don't know if Abaddon is doling them out based on "need", but he may give the noobiest players the most "famous" Das-like figures :p.

2. I am going to see if I can get some of the stats that have been posted cleaned up and added to the list; I don't have much time right now but tonight I will finish the job and everyone should be up. If yours does manage to get up, PM me with any issues/corrections/changes so that I can keep it updated and fit to your desires.

That said; uniqueness is good! I need interesting things to write about so I don't get bored! I may be sorta lenient on what I let fit in this Europe, since Europe-only is kinda restrictive, so I'll have a look at the aztec rip off before I totally dismiss it ;).

3. I'm under the impression that Abaddon will be acting as a tutor to anyone who wants it; a sort of basic tutor who will overlook the orders for form and point out any glaring errors. This should help those who want to improve but don't feel themselves so new as to need a personal adviser.

4. I'm also looking for a better map, but blank Europe maps aren't really abundant... if anyone can manage to find one, bonuses will abound!

5. My AIM is Y2kBBandit2000, and I'm on virtually 24 hours a day. Abaddon's is a8addon. PM us or IM us with questions, AIm is my preferred method of communication.

6. Example orders will be up sometime soon, hopefully tonight. I'm not a huge stickler for form, so don't expect anything BirdNES style, but I will make it known that laying out your orders in an organized fashion is the best way to ensure I actually read it and don't just skim it over and miss things ;).
