It derives from the Latin assumptio, mean "a taking". It celebrates the Virgin's ascent into heaven. The pun only really works in English.
Funny that Christianity would name a holiday after God "taking" a Virgin. Still works, but not as well.
It's more in the sense of accepting or adopting, rather than obtaining.
