Halloween is stupid

As mentioned, I'm not into apples much anymore, other than in sauce. Nowadays for fruit I prefer cranberries, blueberries, saskatoons, or bananas.

I don't think I've ever heard of a saskatoon. Have you ever had blackberries or mangoes? Those are some of my favorite fruits, although the all-time champion is probably strawberries. It's hard to beat freshly-picked blackberries though. I also really like a good pear.

some tip top fruits that y'all might not even be aware of

GOD TIER FRUITS

quince
fig
physalis
mangosteen
thai mango
gooseberries
blackberry
nashu pear
habanero

Oranges are much better. Can't even compare.

meh

Nice oranges are better. Bad oranges are worse. Oranges are too hit and miss. Apples are more consistent.

this is very true. apples are consistent: consistently mediocre.

You've just never had a good apple obviously.
Red delicious apples are overrated.

Fuji apples taste best.

Agree the Red Delicious are overrated. Same goes for Granny Smith. Really, all I eat when it comes to apples is heirloom apples that're grown by friends or family. Those are, to me, the best apples in the world, no supermarket apple can compare. The ones common in Franconia are very sour, which I like. Apple is just one of those gifts of mother nature that are better when you give 'em a little help. Have you guys tried the German style of apple cider? That stuff is great, I make it myself sometimes.

Both my grandparents are growing apples in their garden, my parents are, even in my own garden we have dozens of apple trees. I think I've tried the best that the apple world has to offer, and I've concluded they're just not very good raw. Heavenly in a Strudel, though.. Hnnngn

There is very little better than a good orange.

A blood orange. Boom.

I refuse to even get apples from the supermarket, I either pick them myself at an orchard (one of the few family-friendly activities that I actually enjoy doing) or get them from the many farmers' markets around my house in DC.

I don't think I have, I'm assuming you don't mean hard cider here. My favorite liquor these days is probably Calvados, which I'll readily concede is far better than eating raw apples could ever be ;)

a man of taste .

The store bought apples here are actually pretty damn good. Same with oranges. And avocados. Fruit and vegetables around here are top notch. But we tend to lack the more exotic stuff since Harris Farm, the top fruit market nationwide, started to downsize.

I love blood oranges. I used to drink carbonated blood orange juice imported from Italy twice a week, until said Harris Farm shut down. :(

blackberries picked fresh from the vine (?) are godly. the best ones are the older ones that have started to ferment and have just a wee bit of alcohol in them. good lord i'm drooling.

Saskatoons are also called "saskatoon berries" (among other terms) and look similar to blueberries. The taste is different from blueberries, though.

Saskatoons grow wild in Red Deer, and there are places along the Waskasoo Park trails where the public are allowed to pick them. The bushes that grow within the boundaries of the Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary are not for public consumption (though one guy had the audacity to fill his pockets and come into the interpretive centre with a double handful of saskatoons and ask the interpreter there for a pail) - those are strictly for whatever animals might want them.

I've had them directly from the bush, as we had one in the back yard when I still had the house. But as the years went on and the trees grew up around the yard, it got to the point where the saskatoon bush was only accessible to the birds (we'd leave fruit on the other trees for them as well).

Saskatoons are great in pies, and I've had vanilla-saskatoon ice cream (it's sold in stores here).

I forgot to mention strawberries - I love them! :)

I've probably had blackberries at some point, though I don't remember. Pears are good, and I'm partial to green or red seedless grapes (they're also good when coated in chocolate or yogurt and served chilled).

I've had dried mango, but never fresh ones.

I like wild blueberries - they are similar to ordinary blueberries, but smaller and have very dark-blue color.

Talking about more exotic stuff, some people grow chokeberry and sandthorn here.

Most popular are of course strawberries and raspberries.

I recall specifically the year my candy started being overly scrutinized and being told that it could be poisoned or razors in apples, etc because it was the last year before we moved from that neighborhood. I was 8. It was 1970, the year that article came out in the NYT according to that wikipidia page.
Is that when America went wrong?

bleh I'm not going to read through all 8 pages of this thread except to say Halloween is awesome.

However it amazes me how much people get into it with multiple parties, lavish decorations and costumes, especially compared to Christmas. Christmas, either the secular or religious version, or both, or a mismash of both, is far superior to Halloween both in terms of scope, significance, activities and potential fun. Yet it seems like every year my kids have a dozen halloween activites to choose from and only 2-3 christmas ones aside from ones we plan ourselves.

I was 8 :w00t:.... . the authority figures and the dammed lame stream media came down on me to take away my just rewards and rights to visit where i wanted to go. .....naaaahhhh!!! Still got the bestist candies and well justified tummy ache :dance:

I remember mapping our route which included circling back to our homestead ever 90 minutes to empty out our sacks. Back then I don't remember there being the time limits that are prevalent these days. Needless to say, the candy would go stale well before we could finish it all.

When I was a kid, we had similar urban legends about razors and needles. But since there was no Halloween back then, stories were about razors in chewing gum rather than apples. More modern version is about HIV-contaminated needles attached somewhere in public places to infect people.

Halloween is amazing, I love seeing little children dressed up. I have seven boxes of full sized candy bars ready to go! :)

Tell Ryika of the joy on the children's faces. It will break her.

Needless to say, the candy would go stale well before we could finish it all.

My memory of childhood candy eating capacities tell me this is an inaccurate memory or you just weren't a normal kid.

How many pillowcases did you fill?

I usually just turned out the lights and hijacked all the candy my parents had bought, but every year I told them that we had run out early and needed to get more for next time. By junior high I was probably in the two pillowcase range, and I never had even a hint of anything lasting long enough to get stale.
