Little background: I just bought this game last week but have only played it once or twice. I didn't want to spend hours reading up on information (although I have spent some time reading about certain things) and figured it would be nice if I could get some help while I play the game itself.

Objective: If it wasn't clear, I want to receive feedback from people (experienced or non) on how I'm playing, and have people offer me advice on what I can do better. I'm going to post updates every 15 or 30 turns.

Leader: Random (Although, you can tell the civilization from the flag and from the score box)
Spoiler :
Brennus

Spawn Point
Spoiler :
6UGIn.jpg

I think it's a pretty nice spawn point. Pigs and marble at least. Plan on expanding above the pigs.

GAME SETTINGS
Spoiler :
WFLAA.jpg
(Climate and Sea Level randomizd)

Additional Info: BUG/BULL mod in use, Blue Marble (doesn't matter if you have it or not afaik)

As lymond said, putting the large screenshots in spoiler tags so it doesn't throw off the page. Above the spoilers will always be titles.

Edit: Save uploaded. I'm sorry resource bubbles aren't on in the first image, but from now on every image I post will have resource bubbles on.

Before I actually post a screenshot, information, and upload a save -- I'm wondering if it wouldn't be too much to ask if I could upload my game save, and post screenshots in turn intervals, summarize what I do over those intervals, and ask for feedback/what I could do better.

I was suggested this by a few helpful people over at the General Discussion forum, and decided it would be best if I posted this here instead of continued it over there. If people are willing to help (which I'm sure they will), I'll edit this first post in a moment.

AFAIK, you are in the right place. ;)
Btw, welcome! :)

Doesn't seem to be much interest, or perhaps people are just waiting for me to put the info up. Going to edit the main post in about 30 minutes after I'm done eating.

Edit: Game info up

Go ahead :) but I highly recommend the war academy. Many of the articles are entertaining (I go back and read the walk through every so often, even now)

Well, my first thought is that it's unfortunate that you are playing Marathon and Huge World size. Normal settings are general advised for learner games. Not a lot of folks here play Marathon and speed does change the game significantly, but some do play the speed. Huge map size are a problem for many reasons. Anyway, these settings pretty much prohibit me from helping here.

edit: Doesn't look like Blue Marble is installed. The water would not be so bright.

Well, I'm already thinking of changing it since I kind of just scored five goody huts, three giving me techs and one giving me a settler.

Most forum games here have huts and events off.

I edit the post above, mentioning that Blue Marble may not have installed right. Should be straight forward, but based on the screenshot it doesn't look installed. Make sure you run executables that update Civ as administrator, if using Vista or Win7

Yeah, re-installed. Forgot that I didn't run everything as administrator. Hopefully it works, but it doesn't matter.

Kinda feel bad that my first impression is a botched attempt

Edit: After the rocky start, I finally have the correct stuff up. Going to update this thread after I take my first few turns.

.

ha...no worries at all...this stuff happens all the time with new players...including me at one time

oh...and resource bubbles are your friend...and our friend :)

oh...if you use larger rez screenshots, which is fine by the way...please put them in spoiler tags so it does not throw off the page.

and attach the save

Up to turn 30 now. I don't think I've made any big mistakes yet, hopefully. I built a worker first, and I'm going to go ahead and cancel the scout and make it into a warrior.

Base after Turn 30
Spoiler :
cKaFG.jpg
Probably going to cancel that scout and make a warrior instead.

Buildings/Tech: I researched Mining, Masonry (to take advantage of the Marble), Animal Husbandry (nearby cow, pigs, horses), and Pottery. Bronze Working is almost complete.
I built a pasture for the pigs, working on the quarry for Marble, and I built a farm right of my base.

Additional Info (If you're playing along and haven't scouted -- although you probably have, don't read this)
Spoiler :
No A.I. contact yet, assuming it has to be to the far north of the continent. I doubt the game would spawn me alone. To the north there are a bunch of + commerce resources like dye, spices, and sugar.

Well, I guess there's one good thing that came out of this -- Rocky climate! Looks like the Gallic Swordsman might actually be useful for once.

What to do next: I'm not really sure. I plan on finishing up my warrior and then maybe a settler. Going to make another farm to the north-west of my base. (Tile with 3 food 1 commerce). Not too sure about the tile left of my base... Maybe a cottage?

I'm a bit confused. You say you have started the game as a Marathon on Huge map. However, your screen capture of the game settings says Normal speed and Normal map size.

When you post a screen capture of a map and are referring to resource locations or asking for advice on where to settle, move, etc., it is useful if you turn on the resource flagging. I think I found the marble you mention but I can't find the pigs.

Yeah, I apologize for that. I changed everything because as lymond said, huge/marathon isn't ideal for new players. Plus I had events and goody huts on. On the screenshot on my first (turn 30) update, I have resource bubbles turned on, and the view of my main base.

Still don't have a save.

It really good idea starting out to get advice on opening moves. You have already made a few new mistakes like not emphasizing food first and building useless scouts.

I assume you built a worker first, but I am not sure. It is usually always the right move.

If anything, discuss what you think the opening moves should be and then let us critique it.

Leaving things out of my updates, augh. Sorry :/ ..and on my screen, it shows the save file. Are you sure it's there?

Man, this really isn't my day so far :(

No worries...just working out the kinks

As mentioned in my edit, discuss your plan first for the turnset and then let folks chime in for advice. First off, we try to get a feel for where your game stands now and what you may be missing in terms of basic strategy.

The movement of the settler was interesting. Often it is advised to just settle in place when you are new. However, folks might advise you on possible first move of the warrior or scout to reveal more options and maybe advise to settle at a new location.

Your location is actually not bad though. However, you may have missed out on bonuses for settling on plains hills or marble.

Animal Husbandry was definitely the best starting tech.

Going to do that, or something like that from now on. Edited it in the first update, "What to do next:"

I had no idea there were bonuses for that. I didn't want to settle on the marble though, because I was under the impression it would consume the resource (and I wouldn't be able to use it)

To the post above, not sure if you're serious or just trolling.
